This was an exceptional video. I've been playing for over 4 years now and haven't ever looked into music theory. Now that I've begun writing its been hard to find a video that explained keys well. Thank you!
oh, idk how i got involved in a small competition between my sister and I. It is basicaly about creating a song in a month. I was very confused about what was the Key in music, and you cleared all my questions. Thank you very much.
omg ... ive been trying to figure out wtf a key means for, like, EVER. and finally you've explained it in a way that is easy to understand!!! thank you!!!
I tried learning about the basics of keys before but backed away because of how complicated everything looked and the way people explained it, this on the other hand explained it in a way I understood perfectly, thanks!
I know this is four years old but I've been playing guitar for a few years and never really understood keys or scales. This video helped so much. Thank you
A perfect tutorial is something in which we have the least number of questions in our mind after watching that. And this surely is a perfect tutorial. Thanks
I'm 50 years old and new to guitar, and I started off this video thinking "I'm never going to understand this", and low and behold by the end of the video it actually kinda started to make sense to me. Now I understand why so many songs basically use a lot of the same chords. Thank you!
Greatest music teacher I have ever heard if I'm not mistaken. But you'd have played us The 3, 4, 6 And that Long G chain... it's good to listen to the sounds!😊
Oh my god, I was looking for a beginner video to teach a friend, and your video is the best in that matter. Also you are very sweet in the video and I hope you're well. Thank you
What I've learnt so far with myself that it is the note distance that comprises the melody.. You can play any song in any key by following the exact note distance.. Yes of course you have to follow a certain key once you start playing.. The key can only determine the feel..
I'm learning and thinking about this too and I'm wondering if you forget about the key and just pretend you're playing chromatically, if you shift notes a given 'note distance' do they still keep their 'feel' or would you say the feel changes as the pitches all raise/lower? So for example [C -> G -> Am -> F] shifted down 1 goes to [B -> F# -> G#m -> E]. Also interestingly to me [C -> F# -> Am -> E] still kinda 'makes sense' to me
@@callumscott5107 if the song is in c minor and stars with F so F is the fourth note in the c minor... I wanna play it on E major, the fourth note would be A and if i follow the note distance from the song notation in c minor and apply it to e major (not chromatically)... Thats it.. A song translated from c minor to e major
I revisited this method.. And i found that you can choose any note and just follow the chromatic note distance given in the melody and you wouldn't lose anything..
Hey mate might seem like a silly question but does playing in the key of E mean you start on E or playing in the key ofA mean the first note is will be A Or the key of G mean the first note is a G?
probably the most important thing about keys is that the key tells you the tonic chord or ntoe and that this gives it a sense of "doneness". feel like you should have included that at some point, but love your energy nonetheless
This is a great video and has been super helpful! I do have one question though; if you have a song that's in, say, the key of c, does that mean the song also must start with c as the first note?
Omg thanks this helped alot But i have a doubt how to identify the key of a song because all the keys have some notes common, like the c key and the g key have many notes in common
It's a G scale, and in the key of G the F is sharp. For Major scales, the formula for a major scale is as follows: W-W-H-W-W-W-H (W=whole step), (H = half step). so that last interval between the F and G, in order to make that a half-step, the F must be sharped. Here is a blog post I did on this topic. www.tomasmichaud.com/major-scale-theory/

Wow, that was super understandable.
Glad it made sense.
Very informative! Loved how easy it was to understand. How do I know which strings fall on, say, a c string/chorde?
I'm not sure I understand your question, could you rephrase it a little more clearly?
Hey mate might seem like a silly question but does playing in the key of E mean you start on E or playing in the key ofA mean the first note is will be A Or the key of G mean the first note is a G?
Brilliant !

You teach very great 👍
Thank you! 😃
This is a great video and has been super helpful! I do have one question though; if you have a song that's in, say, the key of c, does that mean the song also must start with c as the first note?
It can start with any note in the key of C. But typically for songs the root chord of the key of C, the C chord is typically the first chord.
Thank you 😊
You're welcome Collin 😊
Nice video mate thank you :D
No problem 👍
Happy Birthday To You
Firstly I like your personally 🤝and this was helpful
Happy to hear that Nkusi!
Thanx alot

But i have a doubt how to identify the key of a song because all the keys have some notes common, like the c key and the g key have many notes in common
There's not one quick answer Ojasv, but I did make a video on this: www.tomasmichaud.com/rgs-live-18/
Thank you
Welcome!
i understood like 1:30 into the video, that was easy thank you
This is only 5 mins but so helpful
Thank alots
You're very welcome Yvken.
Thanks for the explanation! I just don't understand why in the second example of G, the F is sharp?
It's a G scale, and in the key of G the F is sharp. Thomas..great vid..but i need to understand something..say im playing in the key of B..what NOTES will sound good with this?
Thanks
