Attempting to Carve the Worlds Widest Snowboard feat. Ryan Knapton

  • DISCLAIMER: I'm really not sure if this is actually the widest snowboard in the world, however I think you all can agree that a 31cm waist and 14m sidecut is pretty insane.
    Huge shoutout to Ryan for bringing some of his Donek snowboards for me to try, and then literally swapping boards with me on hill so that I could get a run on his personal snowboard. I really enjoyed the chance to try these boards out, I think that if I could spend some more time on this style of board it would really open up a new side of snowboarding. Having that width combined with the large sidecut is a totally new experience, and made for a really fun day. These unique Donek snowboards are definitely something I would recommend if you are interested in getting into this style of carving.

    Thanks for hopping on those boards! I know of two custom Donek boards wider than mine (both are for people with larger boots than me).... otherwise, obviously no mass produced boards are nearly that width. Have a great rest of your season TJ!

      I want a custom Donek :) What would you recommend for a guy wanting to go way wider than a Flagship 169W (27cm waist, 9.5m radius)? 235lbs, 6'3", size 14 ThirtyTwo boots, 15/-6, low-expert level, and occasional heelcup issues on steep/icy runs

      Is there any place on the East Coast (I'm in New Hampshire) where I can demo a Donek? I have a Custom X and Free Thinker and have fun carving, but want to go wider :)

    • @mikeoclimberMTB
      @mikeoclimberMTB 5 років тому +6

      @@aaalllen mine is one of the two Doneks thats wider, 31.9cm waist 32.4cm underfoot 12m radius 162. I'm on 11.5 boots and have plenty of clearance. With size 14 boots i'd go with at least 31cm waist width, or as wide as they can make it (in my case 31.9 for a 162) thats assuming you are carving properly and willing to spend a few days relearning to snowboard haha. I went from a 162w carbon flagship btw. Another thing is with the larger sidecut radius you can definitely size down in length.

    TJ -- Thank you so much for riding not only the Donek Knapton Twin but also "THE" Donek Knapton Twin! Ryan always talks about the radical nature of his board and seeing you [read: skilled rider] on it demonstrates how different it is. It is easy to see how it rode YOU through the heal side carves yet no washout...just a clean carve all the way through! I hope you had fun on it. Another day or two and I'm sure you would be ripping the mountain apart. Watching Ryan put his board through its paces is like nothing else out there on video.

    Check the difference in arm movements between 2 riders. Through my years dancing, I see a lot of dancers focus too much on their leg work and neglect their arm movements. In order to dance on the slope, you have to work on your arms, where to put them to maximize esthetics. It's a whole different skillset that no snowboarder works on. That's why Ryan is the best (at the combination of carving + butter + arm movement)

      I've got the softer twin. It's actually more of a mid to stiff flex board I'd guess at a 6-7 in flex rating.... my old board was a 5 (Ride OMG) and its only marginally stiffer than that. Defiantly not a noodle. Mine is my daily driver.... and I do some freestyle on it. And it's quite light in comparison to my older boards.
