I love the TN concept and utilize it myself but, as someone who does leather work and makes my own covers... I feel like the TN covers are WILDLY overpriced. After making my own, out of high quality Hermann Oak, they come out to like $5 per cover and they're not hard to make... it's just a flat of leather, cut to shape, punch a couple of holes, and maybe dye.

I make my own inserts, at my local art store, I get fabriano paper, I cut it, sew it, it may seem like a lot of work, but I try to make at least 5 notebooks each time.

Your point about trying to write or draw close to the spine is so crucial! For my passport watercolor book notebook I physically pull it out of the Traveler's leather cover to use it. Then slip it back in when I am done.

I just went down the TN road last month. Absolutely love the system. I bought my cover on Etsy from a small leather maker in Ohio (I wanted 4 internal elastics, and to support a small business.) Their quality is AMAZING . I do have a passport from Travelers Company too, also great quality

I think it is enough to start with the starter-kit. So far I have not had any problems (except the urge to buy more stuff); but for the "problems" you stated I found a solution (at least for me).
When I use it on the train in my lap, I need to grip the notebook firmly anyway so that it stays still (while the train is moving) - that way I can also hold it open; no need for the clips // my left hand is my clip.
What I think could help is the ruled underlying sheet thing (don't know the exact name now) - however, since it was hard getting one (or more precise pretty much impossible) I tinkered for myself - Excel is pretty good to make a custom ruling; laminated it and had the perfect guiding-sheet.
Then the inserts - also very hard to get (at least for a reasonable price), so I also tinkered there a bit - made the cover with some thicker paper and the inside with TomoeRiver Paper, cut everything to shape and sew it together (actually that is also a little bit nicer than the staples imo). Sure, it is not perfect, but within 15 to 30 minutes it's possible to craft something that (at least I) was happy with. (Also a plus: you can decide to put in more pages if you want) - the access paper I kept for writing tests and stuff like that.

EBay is where I ordered my Kyoto edition, it’s my first official TN, I have a September leather passport and standard and ready to upgrade to the real thing :)
Just a note on your negative side of only 64 pages per refill, I see that as a positive, as someone who buys notebooks and none of them gets filled then I feel regret for not filling them. At least with a smaller note book I get a boost of dopamine every time I fill one :)

I think the TN system is best for those who switch notebook styles as their life switches modes. For instance, thanks to my job, I am on a definite academic calendar vibe. I don’t want work-type stuff in summer, so switching to Summer Vacation Mode is easy in a TN. Pull out the work inserts, put in the packing list one, the short-trip ones, the watercolor/sketch inserts if that’s your thing, and you’re good to go. This requires some work for proper archival when you go back to work mode, but it is super possible.

OMG what an excellent review! That was PERFECT! I do have a passport olive TN and I love it. I got it in October 2023. So I’m still trying to get settled in it. But for now it has a monthly calendar, weekly calendar, blank notebook for everything I need to write down, and a couple of dashboards (Chic Sparrow). I do still need to get charms, clips, the infamous fountain pen and pen clip, and of course more note books! Oh and I will definitely be checking out those stickers and your Etsy shop! 😊. Yes, it can get pricey but it’s my enjoyment, and organization. Love it, love it, love it!!! ❤❤❤. I will be buying more in the future! Thanks again! You are hysterical and so on point! The lightweight paper notebook is the best value with 128 pages. Also, if you buy it from a country that rolls up their sales tax into the price, it is generally cheaper. Also, love visiting the partner stores. My first purchase was a limited edition Traveler’s Train passport sized, a weekly insert, a pencil board and one of the B sides and rarities cloth wallets.

I ordered one yesterday. Oddly enough I want it because the notebooks are so small. I love notebooks but i don't like to put more then one thing in them (IE: if i was working on two separate games and taking notes on something else i would need 3 notebooks). With my Adhd i jump around a lot so I have stacks of notebooks that have like 5 - 10 pages used in them. I am hoping with this as i jump around i can swap notebooks in and out and the ones not in the journal won't take up a ton of room because i am running out of space.I am starting with 2 dot grids and a water color book, ordered some cool Twsbi fountain pens to go with it and some ink and cool potion vial looking things to put the ink in.

I’m switching to this for 2025. I’m already spending a stupid amount for a planner for every area of life. Then I half the time misplace the book I was using. ADHD for realz. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep it all together for once. And I like the idea of being able to change things if I don’t like it.

Loved the review, thanks! I'm currently using a newestor traveler's notebook passport size (with pockets) and I would recommend it for anybody that is looking for a more affordable traveler's notebook. Besides the affordability, I also think it's a good replacement/alternative for de Traveler's Company Notebooks because it tackles almost all the cons that are mentioned in this video 💃🏽. The passport size newestor fits the Moleskine pocket size notebooks perfectly btw, which gives you a bit more writing space then traditional passport size notebooks!

First time here. Good video. I have been using Travelers for going on 3 years. Last year I picked up an olive edition to use only for comic art and story writing. My main one which is a black leather I keep as a journal and random sketches and ideas and invite artist I know to add to it. I think what got me hooked was the paper, the ink and water colors don't bleed through. Yes this cost me a lot. But, when has good art supplies been cheep? anyway, I subscribed and I'll be watching you from time to time. P.S. I have started ordering extras to give as gifts this holiday season to fellow artist.

I’m a retired commercial artist and I’ve been told since I was in high school to keep a sketchbook. Honestly, I’ve never liked sketchbooks. I hate carrying them around (so I don’t) and I feel like the best art shouldn’t be in a book. After seeing the traveler system I thought that it looked like an easy project to make with some leather scraps I have laying around. I bought the passport size official inserts and made my own cover. I have changed my mind! It fits in my hip pocket with a mechanical pencil and goes with me everywhere. If you don’t have the leather tools and skills, it’s a little expensive to start, but it’s a great investment. Besides, if you are an artist you probably already have tons of stuff you bought because you saw somebody else use it. This, you will actually use!

definitely a little pricey on the inserts BUT it's also for someone who cares about paper quality- it's incomparable to most popular US available notebooks. The benefit is also low cost for trial and error compared to the widely available Moleskine or Leuchtturm, which would be the cost of like 3-4 inserts for one single paper type. I think the value comes from the 1. portability 2. quality of papers and 3. the ability to literally create your own perfect notebook for art, planning, journaling all within the same notebook simultaneously. Great review!

Really enjoyed this, I'm 2 years and 2 TRC in (one regular and one passport both in Camel) i run the free diary daily #013 for my daily writing challenge, then the lined insert #001 for writing my journal, usually a page a day and fully covered in stickers and Washi tape, a grid #002 that i use for lists, i also have the cotton wallet with stickers, my esterbrook bookmark and my photos in it. My passport has the plastic wallet, much cheeaper than the cotton one and not as nice by far, a lined #001 for general notes, and 2 grid #002 that store my reading list, currently inked pens and fitness tracker.
I have the watercolour, kraft, pocket stickers, refill postcards, b sides letter pads and many more inserts that rotate in.
my biggest issue is storing them, the binders are expensive for what they are, can't take many inserts and just aren't ideal, i really would like to find a better longer term storage solution

For me, is it worth it? No. I've never seen any other leather product company have so many variations in quality output and have people excuse it as a quirk because "every notebook is unique". Like no - if I'm buying something, I expect it to look like the advertisement. I expect the color and texture to be consistent with each product.
And sometimes the hole alignments on the spine aren't even correct, resulting in a wonky shaped/folded notebook that is hardly usable. Personally, I would advise anyone interested in a TN system to forgo Traveler's Company as it's clear they went downhill in quality since they stopped being produced by Midori, and instead shop at Paper Republic or any other shops they can find.
Paper Republic has gorgeous Italian Vachetta leather that ACTUALLY softens and patinas with age, and they have more color and size options, including ones you can access via their customization service. The only downside is the expense, as they did end up raising their prices I think a year or two ago, and the inserts aren't as palatable and varied as Traveler's Company, but overall, the investment is far more worth it than the alternative.
