    Hi Dan and Mazzy. Having driven a coachbuilt around France for a few years and around England its just like driving a van. Go for a test drive in both before making your minds up.

    Excellent video. I had a XLWB campervan which at times did give me grief, whereas a friend of mine had a coach built which was shorter, but seemed to have much more interior space.

    Either way I hope when you eventually get a van you'll be attending a few detecting rallies. Good luck.

    Great video. My recommendation for you is a 1/2 year old swift Rio 340. You get a fixed bed and area at the front and easy to park. Or a globecar vario with a pull down double bed 👍

    We have a 22 ft pull behind camper. We usually have both of our teenagers with us, sometimes they bring friends along. It gives us plenty of living space, so we're not smothering each other. It's not huge and hard to maneuver around. We bought ours used on Craigslist for around $2,000.

    long time follower of your great video's Dan, and you and Mazz make a great couple.:-)
    I know you said I'm not going to tow a Caravan but my thinking would be have a nice big caravan that you can leave at a "base camp" and travel out on the daily excursions in a car/suv of your choice. Easy to park and cheap ferry crossings and no worries about finding big enough parking spaces/area's with height restrictions or additional charges for length.

    • @TravelTrollsTV
      @TravelTrollsTV  6 років тому

      No chance. I would hate towing. Too many things can go and would go wrong with me driving.

    You guys should look at renting the different models you are considering. I know you said you didn't want to drive a long or wide one but try them for a week at a time. You are looking for long term so renting different ones for a week will let you get a feel for how they will live

      Totally agree, we hired a big one (coachbuilt 7.5m long) and although the space was great, the driving, parking and small roads/villages was shit!So we hired a 6m van (van conversion) and loved it so we have now ended up buying a 9 year old Hymercar. Really recommend hiring/trying for extended period before you buy

    Have to say my wish list for full time living, would be, a dinette (extra passenger seats, somewhere to sit and eat, table to work from), permanent bed (incl overcab or pull down, no making the bed every night out of your sofa, which you'd soon get tired of), nice sofa/tv arrangement, shower cubicle not wet bath toilet combo.

    Watch all the time, love your videos. I have lived in boats and had campers and the one thing I would like to point out is don't get one where the whole bathroom turns into the shower. Nightmare to clean as you get soap.film all over all the walls, sink, and toilet. Just a little food for thought. Also get one with the largest fridge you can find.

    • @TravelTrollsTV

    Hey guys, you might want to watch some channels of guys that built their own camper vans. The reason being that they explain about their experiences from previous vans they converted and the daily troubles you will have with living in a van. Might be helpful for you to consider different things when buying the camper. I unfortunatly didn't sub any of them but I recall there where 1 or 2 couples even that talked about being on the road for a few years. Cheers from Germany.

    Dan, the second van has my vote. The table behind the drivers seat and NO Rear Doors! The "FreeStyle", after the VW was sweet also. The VW paint is just heavy metal flake in the paint. Can be pretty much be added to any paint but works better in the more translucent paints. The Van style units have just really taken off here in the States.

    Hi as an ex caravanners & an ex motor homer I will tell you they are 2 different animals IF you intend only staying on campsites then a caravan is the most economic way to go .& you will get more room in the van + you will not need to keep packing up the van to go shopping or sight seeing. However a motorhome comes into its own if you travel/tour on the continent as you will be able to use "camping car Airs" which most EU towns have ,you can stay on these for a couple of Euros a night ( a 6 week holiday cost us £1800 all in ) please be aware of what sort of travel you would like ,a couple of days off grid ,or a week or more on sites before you spend 40K or more .which would get you a new car & a really good caravan

    Surely if people like the Westfalia "Glitter" colour they could achieve the same by getting the bottom of the van vinyl wrapped by the professionals? Likely be a lot cheaper than getting it painted and also I suspect would help protect the bottom of the van from stone chips? Easy to remove when you sell the van if needed.

  • @GinMiko
    @GinMiko 6 років тому +9

    Dan... Please use common sense when choosing a motor-home (not emotions).
    I lived,traveled, and worked in one for several years, and the most important feature (for me) was a dedicated work-space.
    I understand that comfort is important, too, but it doesn't help when you need to move all your electronic equipment (camera, laptop, peripherals, etc.) just to make your bed. And let's not forget the room for your detectors.
    Naturally, this is just what I experienced, but might be something for you to consider.
    Hope this helped.

    • @TravelTrollsTV
      @TravelTrollsTV  6 років тому +5

      We discussed our most important features in the video. Our choices differ in tomorrows video :-)

    • @57Skippy1

    • @VoklstWestie
      @VoklstWestie 6 років тому

      Debbie Cooper i like the U shaped dinettes for 2 people in that way, space to eat & space for individual electronics...
      Here in US 'Toy Haulers' have that 'U-shaped'dinette space plus the rest...

    • @57Skippy1
      @57Skippy1 6 років тому +1

      Voklst Westie - Had to look up "Toy Haulers"... haven't done much RV nor Trailer type 'camping' for many years. I like the idea of a work area separate from the dinette. One of the reasons; with 2 people living long-term in such a limited space, it would be good to be able to comfortably 'get away' from each other occasionally - LOL!

    • @VoklstWestie
      @VoklstWestie 6 років тому

      Debbie Cooper yes two separate spaces door inbetween, I used to have a Suzuki Burgman 400 scooter toy hauler would fit two easily, harder with Harleys being so big but still do-able. You could actually put another bed where toys go or two bunks or 4 bunks or day bed many options in the toy area
      Picnic table, work shop.
      Or office space for two plus still fit your bicycles. Or two electric scooters. Many options
      I did not see any on Dans vids, but it is a tow along which Dan does not want.

    It's not the driving that's the problem - it's finding a place to park and the height-bar at the entrances of many car parks.

    Wow! Some of the RVs in the UK are nicer than the ones here in the USA, and more compact too. It seems like here, it's about the size, which sometimes can be a P.I.A. (pain in the a**) especially when trying to navigate narrow back roads. We are in the market for one once the kids finish/graduate high school (less than 5 yrs) so the wife and I can do some traveling, and it seems like most of the ones here are just too 'flashy" (??right word??) and too big for 2 people. Not only that, the prices are like buying a small house!!!! That second one you showed would be the perfect size. Nice and compact. 'Cuz when ya really think about it, you won't be entertaining in it, it is a place to sleep, eat/cook, relax after a long day on the road, and your way to get around. I will say.....looking at RVs is like looking at houses! Is leasing one an option for you? Hey....did you two secretly get married? You guys disagree like you are , LOL!!!! Good luck in your RV hunting. Thank you for another great video and we'll see ya in the next one.

      Our roads are so much smaller though so they have to cater for that over here. There were huge ones at the show but theyre not practical for the UK.

    I think you two need to rent one for a week end. ... Steve

    Washing machine and diswasher.... NO ? then it could be a deal breaker.... What a fun day.... Thinking the rental idea voiced by some of the other comments is worth considering... Parking is a nightmare as is driving on some of Britain's country roads..Toilet inside in a cramped space is a nightmare as places to empty it are limited.. Renting will also give you a chance to try other models and decide exactly what you need.... Very best of luck.. Watch this space? I will be...

    An SUV or sport utility vehicle is a cross between a van and a car. Like a Land Rover in America is an SUV.

    I would never buy another UK built caravan or motorhome, having had 5! We love our Hymer Automatic & lived in her for 6 months. Refillable gas bottles, auto tv satellite, blown air heating, solar panel to recharge our 2 leisure batteries-A Class & only 2.2M wide tho 6.7M long. So easy to drive & no faults in 5 years & 7500 miles. We are lazy & retired & would never go back to to bed-making! Enjoy your hunt & maybe hire one to see what it is really like! Oh & get a good alarm & a tracker once you've chosen 😎😁❤. (Now retired to Gironde where it is very cold tho' the woodburner is as warm as toast!

      We looked at a couple of Hymers but they were priced well out of our league.

      We wandered round the Autumn Show in 2013 & 'cos I'm T1 diabetic have a 3500kg limit on what I can drive. Fell in love with A-Class Motorhomes & had a 'what if' conversation over fish & chips + found someone who imported them-much cheaper. We are looking to buy a 6 M Fiat van conversion since we are now retired in France & 'Hettie' is no longer used. Good luck with your hunt-exciting times 🎆😎

    Dan if you can't handle the driving let Mazzy. You said it your self; she's harder than you are. Really, the first couple you looked at are going to feel even more tiny when the two of you are living in it. Get the biggest you can afford. On the plus side you'll make Mazzy happy!

      I'm guessing you are not British? Only British would understand the size to road ratio problem. We will be travelling many small winding roads. This aint America.
