This song is about the demigod Maui and his adventures throughout hawai'i. My kumu hula taught me the dance to this song when I was in elementary, it was a very fierce dance that was performed well :D
Hanau Papa i ka pae moku o Hawai'i Papa gives birth to Hawaii Huli a'e la i Manaiakalani Drawn up by Maui's magic hook 'O Wakea i kaulana ai ka honua Wakea rests on the earth Ho'oku'u 'o Maui i ke kaumaha Makes Maui squat in the weight A ka luna o Ka'uiki ki'eki'e When on top of majestic Ka'uiki I hapai ai i ka ui kino Pushed up is the great body Ua lawe pio i ka 'alae nui a Hina Captured is the mudhen of Hina A ka la'au hi'a me ka 'aunaki and the fire sticks and the plow Kaholoholo hele o ka la i ka lewa Racing on is the sun in the sky Ua ka'ohi 'ia i ke kaula oho Caught by a hair cord 'O 'Ope'ape'a makawalu kupu 'ino 'Ope'ape'a the evi eight-eyed bat Kaulele i ka 'uhina a ka po Flies in the covering of night Po'alo na maka, 'okia ka po'o Eyes gouged out, the head cut off Pakele 'o Maui i kona manu Maui escapes in his bird Ha''ina ka puana no ka u'i o Hawaii Tell about the Hero of Hawaii No Maui ke kupua he inoa For the demi-god Maui -MKH
Hawaiians were people of progress, they were true scientist of the lands, stars, oceans, spiritual and the human body. We were practitioners of many because we were and still logical people that have the intrest to get better. Trust me, if his ole or kahiko was wrong and never have MANA behind of it, our tutu or kupuna would pay him a visit and let him know.. Keep up the good work Mark Keali'i ho'omalu... Aloha
I get chicken skin listening to dis. Make me think of how my ancestors went thru. How life was then til now. They were eating really healthy. Now days its getting all cloned out. Even our animals too. Sad.
Could someone please give me a translation to this song? I'd like to do a dance to it but I would like the dance to correspond with the lyrics as closely as possible... Thank you!
Hanau Papa i ka pea moku o Hawaii Huki a′e la i Manaiakalani 'O Wakea i kaulana ai ka honua A ka luna o ka ′uiki ki'eki'e I hapa ai i ka nui kino Ua lawe pio i ka ′alae nui a Hina A ka la′au hi' a me ka ′aunaki 'O′ Ope'ape′a makawalu kupu 'ino
@Jalapino777 well he is hawaiian and a kumu hula so the words will be right, his style is uniuqe unlike other halaus who all sound the same, how can you say that its haolefied? come on buddy if your Hawaiian why critisize
well i am a manaleo so i know how hawaiian words sound and how they ar pronounesed, i am also hawaiian so believe me when i tell you its not haole its not, just like the hawaiian language it had different types of dialect.
@ABATAYO808 try huapala.org and click on chants or click on songs, whichever you prefer. They are listed alphabetically, but not every song/oli is on there.
In light of what transpired in earlier posts, I just want to say that your name is spelled wrong. The correct spelling is Jalapeno with an accent over the letter "n", the letter "i" should be the letter "e", and the letter "j" is supposed to be pronounced like the letter "h". So now that we realize that we are all not perfect, do you suppose that we can go back to enjoying music without your intense hatred of creative freedom? Open your heart & try a 4th grade class.
@Jalapino777 *LMAO* I don't agree or disagree with you. I respect your love for kahiko, but we now have reggae, country, rock, hip hop, blues, jazz, and so much more styles of music now because of that lil thing called creative freedom. Keep that Kahiko alive, but loosen up just a bit cuz the world is getting smaller. Malama pono...
Do you have the Oli's words and English translations by any chance? If not, do you know where I can find them on the internet? Please let me know ! I just love Kumu Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu :)
@Jalapino777 What's up with you being rude? It's not Haolefied. It's Modern, something you should actually enjoy. Atleast Mark KEali'iho'omalu has the mana. Just because it doesn't live up to the old days, doesn't mean we can't enjoy a chant.
I just want to say, He is Maoli and why knock the next braddah down for? We all Kanaka Maoli and Kanaka Hapa, rather if he is one or the other, he still a kanaka from these islands. Love the braddah because the olelo ame Mo'olelo is still being carried on traditionaly to our people and the kahiko is still being taught correctly to our peopie and the people that is not Kanaka Maoli ame Hapa to carry on OUR stories of old. Telling them that this is who we are and where we come from.... Aloha
even the auana style can get to be rigid too and not be as creative since it is considered "traditional style". I have found that out with going to one teacher.

I like the way he keeps his Rhythm!
Jeremiah masoli is from hawaii
Maui no ka oe
what is it that he always says at the beginning of his songs?
Hu'u maukaukau
+Kiranda Sings it's actually Ho'omakaukau
Actually itʻs Hoʻomākaukau
even the auana style can get to be rigid too and not be as creative since it is considered "traditional style". I have found that out with going to one teacher.
