@@EG_John TM4 was great and introduced a lot of novel features and mechanics we haven't seen in the series before or since. However the main problem with the game was balance. The Custom Cars whilst fun had roughly half the health of the stock cars, and the boss cars generally had roughly 2-2.5 times the health of the stock cars as well as overpowered specials like Sweet Tooth's and Moon Buggy's that all but guaranteed an opponent's death each time you used them; even if you had no line of sight on them. There was also a huge issue with instakills via placing stacked proximity bombs on the ends of one-way portals (these would deal massive damage and send any vehicle flying out of the map, almost always guaranteeing their death even if they activated invincibility). You could also camp portals and one-way rooms with remote bombs and remote freeze bombs, adding to the tactical elements of the game but also adding hardcore cheese elements to the normally fast-paced series. Another issue was there was no cooldown on freeze effects. You could be frozen again and again by freeze missiles, remote freeze bombs, certain specials, etc until they ran out; leaving you no way to retaliate (especially if the combo was initiated with a remote freeze bomb on the other end of a portal). Using invincibility could counter freeze combo initiations, but it also left you with no energy left to use freeze missiles of your own after, often leaving you at a disadvantage. The unlockable polygon levels, the interactive level hazards, the secret areas in levels, and custom cars were some of my favourite things about the game though. Great video, but what got me excited the most, was finding out the game i played at my mates house when i was a kid and that was Rouge Trip for years i thought it might have been Vigilante 8 because i never got a hold of a copy myself only UA-cam vids. But when you mentioned Rouge Trip a game I've never heard i instantly googled it and there it was that Airport level that i remember. Thank you!
There was a HUGE line of teens outside the local Gamestop the day Twisted Metal (the original) released and when they were told they couldn't sell the game to people under the age of 18 I thought there would be a riot. I just got got one of my friends to buy it for me.
That's almost like a mandella effect for me, I just Google and apparently they were around since I was one but I didn't go to one til like 09 or 10 lol when I wanted to cut out the middle man but you get deals on the front end just not on the back end if selling which is why you gain an advantage just to buy.
There have been times when I reference Twisted Metal with my friends and they’re like “what’s twisted metal?” and I get in my Ice cream truck and blow them up with missiles. I don’t have many friends.
Nice! I usually let them leave, then when they least expect it, I hop in my blue Dodge Viper and fire a ghost missle and watch it phase through their house and blow up in their dumbass face.
I never got super into the series, but man did I love the direction they took with Twisted Metal Black. I got so hooked on that game just to see everyone’s story.
Hell yeah man, I'm with you 100%. I've never heard anyone say anything bad about 3, I think this guy's just jealous because it was North American exclusive hahaha
Twisted metal 2 and vigilante 8 were two games i ran lots as a kid the nostalgia in seeing this video is crazy its like unlocking memorys i forgot before. Thanks for the upload.
I used to hate the idea at first. But a 1 life deathmatch on a big map is no different than a battle royale and I think it would be the only BR I would legitimately play.
I remember loving Twisted Metal 3. It was the first of the series i played, and that is probably the reason I loved it. I didn't have the other 2 to compare them to.
Yeah, same here, and I liked 2 also, but 3 was always my favorite. I think I liked the idea of Black more than the actual game. Like I enjoyed the visuals of the cutscenes and the designs of some of the characters and cars, as well as the stories and the music, but I didn't like the actual game play much. It felt like a game where you're playing with toy cars or something, it was weird.
3 and 4 fan here. I believe the separation between 1/2 and 3/4 is solely based on which group we started out with. I owned and played them all but clearly remenber 3 and 4 having most of my time invested into. Now that I look back I believe Black to be the best of the series as the pace of the game made it that much more competitive.
god, this video sent me down the path of looking up all these old ps1 games me and my brother used to play over and over on demo discs and it became tradition for us to play net yaroze on every demo disc despite having same games every damn month and always "adventure game" and that maze game with the zombies lol i remember my brother playing the Klonoa dtp demo so much one year visiting our grandparents house that my gran'dad went out and got it for him to play, this was before we had a PlayStation as my gran'dad was a gamer in the early to mid 90's so that Christmas they got us a ps1. i know this is unrelated to video but brought back childhood nostalgia! so thanks for that.
WHAT?! twisted metal 4 didn't suck! it had memorible levels, a great soundtrack and had great childhood memories becuase of it! it was awesome and my first twisted metal game. i wish i still have it. :(
Opening up with the psx boot chime gave me a nostalgic chubby. I've always wanted a Twisted Metal movie franchise. The villan in the crow would be a sick Calypso and Rob Zombie could be Grimm. Death Race was cool and close but not quite the full Monte.
Mr. Grimm should be modeled pretty much exactly like Ghost Rider without the fire, unless they'd want a more human approach, in which case I'd go with the Black version of Grimm and put a skull over his head.
Great vid! I never was a Playstation kid, but I remember playing the first game on a friend's console... and not being a huge fan. But I want to check out the rest of the series now, the ones on PS2 and 3 in particular. You've convinced me, they sound fun.
Which was just a tweaked version of the Vigilante 8 game engine. And it was great - I will still fire it up in an emulator on a fairly regular basis. Vehicle combat games are my favorite genre. I still think the pinnacle of the game style was Roadkill on the GameCube/PS2/Xbox. It's a shame it never got a sequel.
I Tweeted this URL to Dave. He's digging it. :) David Jaffe @davidscottjaffe "Ooooh, nice! Another great doc on the TWISTED series! I love this- nice job! If you dig stuff Twisted, give this video a view- it's good stuffs! :)"
Im glad u went over small brawl. Not many people talk about it but its the best in the series next to 2 and black. The maps were fun and unique the weapons were nice and the style and characters were fresh and cool. But it still felt like tm and had so many cool secrets and what no to unlock hidden characters and maps that the game felt so mysterious as a kid
Excellent series review, very thoughtfully and thoroughly done. Having played all the Twisted Metal games thoroughly since their release into the present, IMO Black is the best Twisted Metal game, followed by TM2012, TM2, Head On, TM4, Small Brawl, TM3, and then TM1. TM2012 could have been the series' best, but IMO Talon and cheesy freeze + nuke tactics inhibited it a bit overall, as did the initial online multiplayer issues you mentioned on its release. Talon was a fun idea in TM2012 and was super fun to play as, but was a major pain in the ass to play against due to most weapons not being effective against it in the air and it being almost unkillable if it stayed above buildings or in your blind spots high in the sky whilst gathering weapons, chipping away at opponents, and opportunistically killing weakened opponents (in the case of it flying high above you, not even freeze missiles would freeze Talon long enough to cause it to hit the ground, and it could then recover, freeze you, and punish you). It also was able to ruin the balance of the game to an extent by being able to fly up and grab really powerful out-of-the-way weapons and pickups most vehicles had to dedicated significant effort to get, its ability to camp those weapon/pickup spawns, abuse out of bounds areas to be super hard to kill, and pick up and carry objective-carrying players with its alt special in objective mode. I mained him and got a huge K/D ratio back in the day (I even beat the world record K/D Reaper in several 1v1 fights to the death at the game's peak), but it made me not really want to play any other character whenever possible; limiting my overall enjoyment of the game compared to Black and TM2 where I liked playing all the different characters.
Great video man! This is the first I've seen or heard of your channel and I was impressed/entertained so much so that I HAD to subscribe for more content. Love your style, presentation, sense of humor, and the overall polish and effort you've clearly put into your content. I'll definitely be back in the future for more. One question though, where are you from mate? I ask because your accent and dialect strike a remarkable resemblance to Guru Larry's. I was curious as to if you guys grew up in the same area or something in a similar vein. Maybe it's just coincidence, but I figured there's no harm in asking. Hit me back if you'd like and have the time. I'm really interested to find out.
The original game videos reveal that the series was intended to be called High Octane. But a change was made halfway through production, alterations were made, including the original ending videos.
TM2 will hold a special place for me as the times I got to hang out with my older brother. Just watching him play it was fun for me and it was one the few things we bonded over.
Love me some Twisted Metal. I got World Tour before I actually owned a PS1. Had played it over a friend's house and my mum had said she'd got me a PS1 for my birthday and cos I couldn't wait I went out and got Twisted metal World Tour ready to play on it when it arrived. Spent a lot of time around friends and relatives houses playing it on their Playstations for a few weeks. That game is still insanely playable. I do love me some Black and the PS3 game though. Both have a load of good points top to them and it's likely just nostalgia for World Tour keeping me from rating them higher.
Lol what's the deal with the random pitch shifting? Or is that explained some time after the first two minutes of the video? Commenting way before finishing the video

my favorite was and is still 3. the cars were harder to maintain control of because they used something closer to racing game physics. i actually got fairly good at it because i used cheat codes during practice to give me infinite energy for turbo and skill weapons such as napalm, jump, the minion missile salvo and others. and infinite special weapons. using turbo as your default gas button does wonders for learning car control.
I still have a real special place in my collection for TM4. Me and my now deceased younger brother spent countless hours on it. Nostalgia glasses aside it wasn't perfect. However I don't feel it was judged fairly due it coming after TM3 and being by the same people.
Twisted Metal Black was my first entry into the Twisted Metal series, got it with my ps2 for christmas years and years ago (my parents certainly didn't buy it though, came packaged with Sly Cooper 2 in a ps2 bundle I guess) the one thing I remember was the cover of the case which was different from most copies of Black I see these days, it just had Sweet Tooth siting buy his truck holding some cotton candy, but in the puddle of water below him his reflection was holding a knife. Like what was being shown at 34:56
If there's one nitpick I have about Twisted Metal Black, the enemy cars don't build up their acceleration and instead just immediately rocket forward making it difficult at times to make shots, at least for me.
So glad they decided on twisted metal it foreshadows the deep character driven psychological dramas as well as the twist endings. Not just the car combat situation

That 40 minutes went by really fast....
Ahhhhh thanks... glad you enjoyed the longer video
There have been times when I reference Twisted Metal with my friends and they’re like “what’s twisted metal?” and I get in my Ice cream truck and blow them up with missiles.
I don’t have many friends.
Nice! I usually let them leave, then when they least expect it, I hop in my blue Dodge Viper and fire a ghost missle and watch it phase through their house and blow up in their dumbass face.
i usually jump in my red Ferrari and blast fools with my red laser.....
BEWARE CRIMSON FURY, HE'S A RED LANTERN!!!
I jump in my nuclear missle truck that everyone forgot was a vehicle in a forgettable game
I usually just tell them to wait, walk around the corner, become one with my 2 giant wheels and come back and deliver a sonic wave.
I never got super into the series, but man did I love the direction they took with Twisted Metal Black. I got so hooked on that game just to see everyone’s story.
i loved TM3 so F the critics
Hell yeah man, I'm with you 100%. I've never heard anyone say anything bad about 3, I think this guy's just jealous because it was North American exclusive hahaha

Security: "What's that now?"
Programmer: "Yeah, Bill finally lost it"
Always nice to see another proud video game collection stored on the same Argos bookcases as mine 👊
they need to bring this back, and also LOADED
I miss this series
Twisted metal 2 and vigilante 8 were two games i ran lots as a kid the nostalgia in seeing this video is crazy its like unlocking memorys i forgot before. Thanks for the upload.
The editing in this vid was legit pretty awesome
Really appreciate it... spent a long time on this video
Honestly surprised they haven't tried to retool Twisted Metal for the Battle Royale market... It would fit the franchise like a glove...
Me too!
I used to hate the idea at first. But a 1 life deathmatch on a big map is no different than a battle royale and I think it would be the only BR I would legitimately play.
yayy I've been wondering when another complete history video would come out and here we are! 😎
It would be amazing if they remastered all the Twisted Metal games and released them on PS5 in a massive Twisted Metal collection.
I hope they do too I think it will do great especially like 2 or black
This makes me want to dig up my PS2 and play TM:B again (I lost the memory card that had everything unlocked, so time to unlock everything again).
Your in for a good time
Brilliant video. Fantastic editing skills too. My favourite is Twisted Metal Black. The only other one I've played is the very first one.
Really appreciate it mate... I spent a long time editing this one :D
Mad Respect for this franchise
Great Memories with TM1 and TM2
Thank you for this! This is my first time playing the series (emulating all the ps1 releases through retro pie) I really like it so far!
I remember loving Twisted Metal 3. It was the first of the series i played, and that is probably the reason I loved it. I didn't have the other 2 to compare them to.
I love your long format videos :)
Loved and played mostly TM III & IV. Black was awesome but for some reason passed on it for other games at the time.
Glorious. Love the series even now. Also, cheeky reference to Vigilante 8 at 21:30? Sweeeeeet.
One of the best series, most unique characters ever!
@@ermacjones1911 I'm thinking of the wrong character. The guy with the Dragula. That being said Nick cage as grim would be funny AF.
Great vid! I never was a Playstation kid, but I remember playing the first game on a friend's console... and not being a huge fan.
But I want to check out the rest of the series now, the ones on PS2 and 3 in particular. You've convinced me, they sound fun.
I didn't know Twisted Metal was popular in the UK, I always thought it was basically only popular in North America. Fantastic video man!
OMFG the original PS1 intro makes my heart race with nostalgia.
yup first 10seconds gave me the chills.
The product of this video is amazing 😍😍😍 instantly subbed
Cheers from Milwaukee, Wisconsin brother! Keep up the great work. Excellent quality and editing to your videos.
Hell, even Star Wars had a Vehicle Combat game.
He left out red asphalt
I Tweeted this URL to Dave. He's digging it. :)

"Ooooh, nice! Another great doc on the TWISTED series! I love this- nice job! If you dig stuff Twisted, give this video a view- it's good stuffs! :)"
Awesome!
Twisted Metal games always have amazing commercials.
Subscribed! I've been a TW fan since the beginning and still play the originaals to this today...
Anyone know what song plays for a very short time at 24:18? Thanks
But a change was made halfway through production, alterations were made, including the original ending videos.
lol at Boogie's theme playing.
I see you guys already know where the most fun is in Vigilante 8!
Twisted Metal 1 is one the best game on PSX.
I believe Motor Toon is sony oldest exclusive franchise. It was released in 1994
Mikey Mouse Mania is okay just the hit detection is off, I think best Mikey game is Castle of Illusion
TM2 will hold a special place for me as the times I got to hang out with my older brother. Just watching him play it was fun for me and it was one the few things we bonded over.
Same here bud :)
Another Twisted Metal would definately be one of my most anticipated games. Great breakdown
Great video man,i wish you talked about the awesome soundtrack of all this games, great music in this games,im a huge Rob Zombie fan, cheers!
Europe really got a raw deal with the twisted metal franchise huh
I'm assuming you live in Europe
@@mortenera2294 yep
the censorship on twisted metal black drove me crazy basically all the story is removed as well as being able to run over the driver of the car you have just blown up
Even the PS3 twisted metal was censored here and no e of these was due to our censorship board it was sonys policy
And no head on for the PS2 wtf
@@zachthezombie My father usually bought American and Japanese games for our modded Sony consoles when I was a kid, they costed a lot but at least most of them weren't censored at all
Hope you can do Vigilante 8 and Rogue Trip as well. Love this video :)
my favorite was and is still 3. the cars were harder to maintain control of because they used something closer to racing game physics. i actually got fairly good at it because i used cheat codes during practice to give me infinite energy for turbo and skill weapons such as napalm, jump, the minion missile salvo and others. and infinite special weapons. using turbo as your default gas button does wonders for learning car control.
Like what was being shown at 34:56
i loved twisted metal black so much as a kid. So many late nights with my brother playing all the different campaigns. the soundtrack too was clappin
ive never watched this channel before but im glad i did,
i never realised jeremy clarkson looked so young
You can't just open a video with the PS1 launch sound like that, you have no idea how many visceral memories that unlocked in me.
Mwahahaha your nostalgia belong to me now!!!
Love the Grindhouse Drive Inn theater references. Love the channel.
