I can honestly say that it's one of my favorites too. I also remember being a little girl, growing up in Brooklyn, NY, and seeing the billboard for this film. 1991 was a great year for Black cinema, especially films like this one.
One of Diahann Carroll’s most notable accomplishments was her featured role on tv as Julia-playing the first Black female professional role as a Registered Nurse
I said the same!! It’s also odd that they mention The Colbys instead of Dynasty. The Colbys was a spin off of Dynasty, and Dynasty was far more popular.
YES, much Love and Respect to the dearly departed actors in The Five Heartbeats that helped this movie become a golden, favorite and all-time classic! Your contributions and work are greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten!👊✊👍
It's mostly about The Dells, but it's also combined with other groups/singers in that era, i.e., The Temptations, and the scene where dude was being hung out of a window by Big Red, was based on a true incident that happened to Jackie Wilson. Big Red was a Berry Gordy-type guy who messed up their royalties, made the fellas pay for their cars, etc. In an early scene, after the Heartbeats record became a hit, Red gave each of them a new Cadillac car; well, think of the Temptations movie, when the Temps song "My Girl," hit the charts to number 1, each of them got new Caddies, with the exception of David Ruffin, who had a custom all-white Rolls-Royce with his trademark 👓 added to the car door. David Ruffin, like Eddie King Jr and Marvin Junior of the Dells were addicted to drugs, alcohol and the fast life. Only the fast life took David out, but Marvin Junior cleaned up his act,and Eddie did too. There were other groups that went thru some of the same stuff: Eddie King Jr was put out of the Heartbeats bc of his constantly missing rehearsals being drunk and high, same deal with David Ruffin. When their characters were replaced them in the leads, both became angry and belligerent: Flash replaced Eddie and Dennis Edwards replaced David Ruffin. Even in the group The Spinners, they had a tough time with Motown. They had minor hits in the 60s, but their breakout hit came in 1970, "It's A Shame". They didnt get the good songs and usually worked in the shipping department or driving a station wagon to pick-up the Jackson 5 from the airport. In 1972, they left Motown and signed with Atlantic Records under the suggestion from Aretha Franklin. Oh yeah, I almost forgot about the white boys that were trying to literally push the Heartbeats out of the way, well, Little Richard had that same problem with Pat Boone doing lame covers of Little Richard's hits, 'Long Tall Sally,' 'Tutti Fruitti,' "Rip It Up." Boone couldn't sing as fast as Richard and in the end, Boone was thru and Richard regained his rock and roll kingdom.

Michael Wright is so criminally underrated in everything he's ever done since I first noticed him in The Wanderers. Thanks to the talented Robert Townsend for this movie!!!
