13:43 Not a metal guy but really wanted to hear what this guitar sounds like with a low-key ambient sound. Awesome review. I've said it time and again; PRS is the Lexus of Guitars. Thanks!
I gotta say, I see a lot of shredders and chuggers on YT with guitar reviews and such, but I love your style. It's the skill AND soul of playing - fantastic stuff, man.
Yeah I have to agree, in later years I have really come to prefer medium to high output pickups instead of high to extreme. You can really hear the details in the tones better and you got a lot of more playroom when choosing what amp to go for with pickups like Mark's different pickups. When younger I went for the maximum output pickups and full gain on the amp, that usually went ok when plugging in to a Marshall for example, but a lot of other amps it sounded shit to be honest, even in Marshalls it sounds better with a medium to high pickups. That is my 2 cents about it anyways.
I did the opposite, and recently picked up the 6 string model with an Evertune. I got it for studio work/clients, and man I was blown away by the pickups and build quality for the price, great instrument. Glad you’re liking yours too! :)
Thanks for showing this in Drop G, I always find it kind of odd when they make these signature models but don't set them up in the way the Artist would...
I have the other Holcomb 7 string model with the purple. It's a beast of a guitar. I love my Ibanez 7 strings, but this guitar will spoil you in how a 7 string should look, feel and sound. Mine is as you noticed on the quality. PRS is just a quality monster guitar company. I'll always play Ivanez, but my PRS collection has increased and will continue to do so.
This guitar has become my go to since I picked it up. Definitely add locking tuners, I like the Ratio ones. The electronics are a bit cheap outside of the pickups and I had to replace the 3 way switch already. This is the only guitar that doesn’t feel like a toy in my hands when I switch between my Dingwall 6 string bass back to guitar.
I don't like the 7 string aspect. Hell, I'm still trying to master 6. But the less frills finish is really nice to me and the guitar does seem to put the cost into what matters in actual playing than what doesn't. Nice review Leon.
Sounding great in this video. Fun fact. AC/DC used Mesa Studio preamps for the Live At Donnington concert. I'd love to see you do an Angus tone with your Studio Preamp.
@@LeonTodd For real. They used the Mesa stuff on The Razor's Edge tour. Go back and listen to those Live At Donnington tones. Angus's tone has a lot more saturation than you might remember.
I played one of these the other day straight thru a 5150. Sounded pretty vicious. I found the neck a tad thick, the satin finish made it nice and smooth tho. Overall pretty good, especially considering the price..
I have one of those but mines came with a white nut, which I upgraded to a black Earvana and threw on some PRS locking tuners Those pickups are so good
Wow. This guitar seems to be able to do it all. I've been saving for a good 7 string to chug with but this PRS seems to do that and more. Was leaning towards the ESP Stephen Carpenter (sparkle green) or the Ibanez Axion Label but kinda leaning towards this model.
Love the range of tones you got out of it. I have this guitar and love it so much. Prob best review of it on youtube.. I struggle to get the gutteral neck coil tapped tone for thumping though
i have one of these as well as the 6 string version and I also have one of the Jackson juggernauts and both Jackson and prs nailed making an affordable great to play awesome sounding feature loaded 7 string guitar , but prs definitely gives you a fair piece more by including the full signature pickups however I got my juggernaut for 60 % off when Jackson was getting ready to release the second run of the juggernauts and with the extra money I saved I bought some DiMarzio illuminator 7 pickups and still paid less than MSRP for it , both are great sounding very well made guitars and would be perfect as someone's first 7string or even as their only 7string
Hey Leon, you should check out that same model but with the glossy Holcomb burst! Looks amazing, i can barely tell the difference with the more expensive ones on videos!
I’ve always been tempted to get one. My best friend owns the 6 string Burst version and he said the only things these need are TUSQ nuts and then they punch above their weight class
Yeah the only things I'd really change about this are the things I tend to change on all my guitars - locking tuners, preferred string gauge, new nut if the strings need it.
that's a great looking guitar. if i was in the market for a 7, i'd definitely take a look at one of these. i've got one of the prs se baritones with p90's and i love it. i agree that prs have really made the smart move on where to cut the expensive appointments.
They used to do recessed covers, they changed at a time where they not only moved to cheaper labour but higher RRP also. I was a big supporter of PRS, having owned a couple cores and a few SE's, but after they turned to less bang for buck and start selling these things as features I cant back them any more... Its a shame because taking away the now shortfalls they are great instruments.
Thanks mate! Got a few Ormsby clips up from a few years back now, I've known Perry for a long time now. Still have some of the first pickups they ever made!
Nice video and nice guitar! A comparison video between this one and the JP7 would be nice, I have a JP7 and I'm looking for a fixed bridge 7 strings and that will really help 😉
Leon Todd what did you think about the neck on that 7 string PRS ? I love the "wide thin" necks on 6 string PRS guitars and I also like the Ibanez neck called Wizard 3 (little bit thicker than your typical super slim Ibanez neck) . I was not a superfan of the neck on the Holcomb 7, it felt a little weird with the way it was flat and wide compared to a lot of other 7 strings. I did however love the sound the guitar made and those Alpha and OImega pickups really rock. You can really hear all of the strings really good when you strummed the chords, bass from the heavier strings while also the brighter "sparkle" from the lighter strings , makes for a great contrast in the tone. I watched the whole video and you kind of mentioned the neck and that it surprised you a bit, so you did like it ? I have never played a guitar with that kind of neck, maybe I would get used to it.
Leon. Do you happen to know what model strings were on that PRS? I know it’s been a couple years but I put some GHS Boomers on mine and they suck. Thanks
Thanks for this great vid Leon! Very complete and detailed with your views. I wonder what the whole fuss is all about regarding the nut? I have read many bad reviews about the nut, perhaps it was from the very first version and it has been corrected in 2021 or 2022? Thanks again!
I have this guitar. It's absolutely fantastic. My only criticism, and its a small matter, is the white binding. I think a natural color would of matched better. but that is only aesthetics. this thing is a beast. Having said that, my 22nd century Ormsby GTR Hype 7 is also a monster.
The first PRS I ever tried was a Holcomb 6-string and I really did *not* get on with the neck. Like, it *hurt*. 🤪 Put me off trying any others for years, but eventually I decided my issue was the super flat, Jackson-y fretboard radius which is only used on the Holcomb, so I'd been doing PRS and myself a disservice. 😆
Very curious about the string gauge you used for the drop G tuning. I have the Juggernaut Pro series which is Misha’s affordable sig model with the same scale and radius and it’s definitely a great guitar for the money but I would definitely need to up the gauge for drop G. Drop A is about the lowest I could get with the factory strings. Cheers!
