    The song at the end sounded great!! I think that you would be a great pedal steel player.

    I had a 6 string lap steel made for me by a guitar maker with the Certano benders installed. I also had the roller bridge and roller nut sold by Certano installed. Pedal steel guitars have roller bridges and nuts which make the string movement smooth in operation. I played around with pedal steel for a few years and I was not very good. Eventually I sold it. My guitar had three foot pedals and five knee levers. Quite a difficult instrument to master. The lap steel with benders is a great alternative. I have mine tuned to open E.

    John...this will be a fun journey for you. Please post details of the tuning you're using in this video. Which 'D' tuning and the bender raises?

      Hi @docMarc2771 Thank you, it has been very fun! I have it tuned to DBDADF#AD My benders raise the A to a B and the F# to a G.

    Great video and information! Thanks! Couple questions. Are the palm bender handles long enough with that extra long tailpiece/bridge? Also, you mentioned string tension being stiff at E9 tuning. If you had to it again, would you get a shorter scale length steel?

    • @johntoland2991
      @johntoland2991  9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! I don't feel like they are too short, Its pretty comfortable where they are at. I think maybe a sorter scale length might help, but I got the idea to do the D tuning from another video and that person had the recording king lap steel which I believe is a shorter scale length and he said he had the same issue. Again, it could all be in my head and I plan on toying with it in the future to try and make E9 work because I would one day like to graduate to a pedal steel and I feel like I would be more prepared for that if i were playing in E9 now. One thing I will say is I rarely use the lowest 2 strings on this one so I think I would have been just as happy with a 6 string at this stage of my playing.

    Thanks for the demo, I just got the same 8 string.
    Difficult to learn.
    What tuning do you use?
    Thanks

      DBDADF#AD But i really only use the highest 6 strings. I haven't really figured out using the lowest 2. My tone doesn't sound very good when I play them. Possibly because of the slack tuning making them too loose, but they sound dull and buzzy. It also could just be poor technique on my part or maybe they should be in a different tuning. I found some other tunings on forums and from friends but this is what I've had the most success with.

      @@johntoland2991 hey thanks so much. I thought it was the lap steel or the pickup but those 2 low strings 😑
      I might take them off and stick with 6 😊

    Did you have any issues with the certano screws conflicting with the leg mount bracket on the underside of the body? Asking because I've heard of guys that have had this conflict with the 6 string versions of this SX Lap Steel.

    • @johntoland2991
      @johntoland2991  9 місяців тому +1

      No I didn't have any trouble at all!

    • @EclecticHillbilly
      @EclecticHillbilly 4 місяці тому

      You can always flip the leg mount over since the legs are adjustable if the screws are too long. (I haven't installed benders on mine yet but was anticipating that problem and flipped the bracket over and it works fine)
      Edit: Mine is an SX 6 string

    “The pedal steel is possibly one of the harder instruments to learn”
    (Bass guitar in the background laughs as it pays for itself 10 times a month)
    I started 8 string steel over a year ago, same exact guitar you have, at first Junior Brown’s C13 then drop 8 to the 6th for C6 then down to A6. Pulled the trigger on a Carter Starter for $1k in April and now I’m looking at my gear to see what I can sell for a pro model. You should definitely get a pedal steel, with the way the market is going every one of those is a smart investment, if it’s not for you you’ll make money. I highly recommend an open 6th tuning on your console steel to get out of the open major tuning prison slide guitarists live in. So much more you can do harmonically, melodically, harmonized and it’ll get your brain out of that prison

    • @johntoland2991

      Its 36 fretts, I can't get to it right now to measure the scale length, but I will do that and get back to you

      Do the strings go out of strings fast or do you recommend the roller bridge?

    • @johntoland2991
      @johntoland2991  7 місяців тому +1

      I haven't noticed it going out of tune very quickly. I've played quite a few shows with it and I'll tune in between songs and stuff and I don't think it goes to far out very quick. The one thing I will say about the bridge is I got a creaking sound when I would use the benders at first and it was the string rubbing across the bridge. i put some oil on it and it went away. I'm sure some graphite on the bridge would do the same thing. But a roller bridge would take care of that problem as well and I image that it would help it stay in tune better, but for the money i've been pleased using it with the stock bridge myself.@@beaukapeliela9540

    Don't want 8 strings. Don't want short scale fret board. P-90s are way too noisy - especially cheap ones. Don't care who plays it. Recommend no-one buy this SX lapsteel :)
