Two giants on the stage giving an acting lesson for the new generation that like the challenges and are willing to pay the price to reach that level of professionalism.
These two command the stage on their own, and are amazing together! The bit where she spits on him and he licks it up is hilarious. I love how this is shown where the actors talk about the characters in between scenes.
I don't remember what the line was in Shrew, but I remember a plane going over, and drowning out the actors , so Raul Julia paused in middle of his speech for the plane to leave, and then responding to the plane, the most perfect line from Shakespeare came out. It was like it was plannd like that, although it wasn't
I wish the movie displayed the play like this. You see the chemistry and how each force meet with each other, while the movie displays it as an act of force and terror.
I remember seeing that production. It was '78 or '79 (late 70's..can't remember exact yr). Streep was just starting to get known. I vividly remember reading the program and her bio saying Streep will be in the soon to be released 'Deer Hunter'
1978 -- it was between 7th and 8th grades for me and I was madly in love with Raul Julia. I had already seen Meryl Streep in Measure for Measure in the park. That was when I discovered I needed glasses.
@@sarita423 oh, sorry to hear that! I'd thought maybe you were referencing sth else. Thanks for replying! It must've been amazing to even hear their performances at the park
I saw this documentary on PBS way back when I was in high school and have been talking about it since, and searching for it on the Internet from the moment I discovered You Tube. For me, this the broadest, funniest, sexiest performance of this play and the only one that makes any sense. Streep and Julia are just brilliant in it. Thank you, thank you for posting it.
This is great, but you should also check out "Commedia! Taming of the Shrew", the American Conservatory Theater performance from 1976. It's on UA-cam. My students love it. I show these two performances and Liz Taylor's to show how differently the play can be staged.
Saw this pr this production in college. BEST production of Taming of the Shrew I've ever seen. I really wish it could be put on DVD or digitally somehow! It's absolutely amazing! It gives a whole new meaning to, "Being seen and not read."
I enjoy watching professionals giving new meanings to words just by how they're spoken. Great performances by both Meryl and Raul. I've seen many adaptations of Taming of the Shrew, some done by changing the time period to the wild west, 1930's Chicago, or even gender swapping the roles. Though the adaptations may be well acted, it's nice to see the play done in a more traditional way, showing that Shakespeare can still entertain us without resorting to gimmicks.
Finding this is the greatest Xmas Gift EVER! Ever since I saw it in Europe on TV in the early 1980s I've been searching for it everywhere! Thank heavens for the internet, thank you for posting it on UA-cam. This is not only a fantastic performance by Raoul Julia and Meryl Streep but also an incredibly passionate lesson in acting - every second of it a joy to see! I cannot imagine a better suited couple for this play...
Thank you for making this video available. I applaud your efforts as I stomp my feet at the onstage antics. ( As is required in any good afternoon at the theatre.) At first watching I am reminded that Shakespeare is made alive again and again by fine actors of such high standards. Who would have thought to put Raul and Meryl together, what style, what flair> Kiss me here.
I’m so happy! I’ve been looking for this for so many years! I talked about it all the time and I was just 14. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for posting!
okay but am i the only one that finds it funny or kinda cute that this big bad kate is so ticklish? like she trashes a grave, smacks her sister around, threatens her father with revenge for not hearing her explaination for a violent outburst, puts up this whole big fight, trash talking and all but then shes, in complete truth, so easily taken down? no better a person to portray this juxtaposition than meryl streep.
I saw an interview of Raul Julia, and he talked about Meryl Streep spitting on him, and he said, "How could Meryl spit on me? But then I thought about how Petruchio would react to it?" Julia was channeling something very true about Petruchio: he is a gentleman as he says he is. How many men would have the strength to let a woman spit on him without losing his shit? But to let a woman spit on him and lick it off as if it were nothing, just taking it as a wound of love, is to become the definition of a man. How many more men would become small and bristly? "That I'll try," she says, seeing if he is a gentleman, and for the whole play he doesn't lose his shit and proves to her that he is indeed so. That's what's happening underneath.
I'm writing a paper about the Taming of the Shrew for my English class and I'm analyzing different adaptations of it. Do you possibly remember what interview this was and where I can find it so I could use it as a source? It's okay if you can't, I'm just wondering!
14:40 - they meet 15:20- come sit on me 16:15 - yours 17:30- had I a glass I would 17:47- he grabs her 18:02-19:33 - I don’t know how we were allowed to watch this in English class 21:12 she charges at him
I recognize one of the supporting actresses! It's the one who plays Amy Schumer's mother in the Computer Therapy sketch! I love when I accidentally connect two distant things.
Sure I watched this production during the release of KvK and wanted to see what the hype was with Meryl. On British TV . Would love to see it again as with a previous post it's something that stays with you as magical and takes you to a different level. My first and only taste of Shakespeare.🙂🙂
Raul played the most difficult and intense characters from the British literature. He was good in plays and movies. Raúl did a great job with the British accent. Would it be good that Meryl and Julia made a movie together. Good character actors are make in the theater.
A few years before the American Conservatory Theater did this in 1976 with Marc Singer in complete Commedia del Arte style and it looked much stronger then this tradional performace by two excelent actors.
The Kabala as our three forms of consciousness - culture is Ka - traditions are Ba and those who use it to suppress others, don't understand one bit of what we can accomplish WITHOUT CONFLICTS ... what is that with being IN THE WRONG BODY, your body is your La, your linear life and sometimes you lose and other times you win, but it always feels like being an actor, playing Shakespeare, isn't it? Life can be a drama, but your body can bring you in the gardens of Eden, and playing with that duality is being the sublime artist - the one who can read between the lines, mocking with the blind King, who wants to be 'entertained' to prove he exists ... the other part of history ... Besides this, I think that Shakespeare's plays were meant to be performed in this way ... and really, waiting for a free ticket is part of the program ... I loved Raul Julia. He was my favorite stage actor and I saw him on Broadway many times. I cried when he passed. Taken far, far too soon.
BEST PETRUCHIO EVER!!! Such chemistry between these two....
Actually Peter O' Toole was the best Petruchio ever...
He's a pretty good #Caliban too.
I'm still partial to Marc Singer.
@@effyiew7318 me too, it was a performance of fast whit and agile acrobatics and very very fysical.

God bless Raúl Juliá. He left us 25 years ago.
His british is really good...BUT THAT NATURAL PUERTO RICAN ACCENT MAKES IT BETTER!
Raul Julia and Meryl Streep are such an inspiration!!!!
Amazing actors julia streep. Its to bad they did not 🌟 in a 🎥 together..
I was there... great memoirs. Raul is an amazing performer. lives for ever, Patriota

How wonderful to see Raul Julia again. What a wonderful, sexy pair he & Streep make as Petruccio & Kate!!!
Ugh I love this footage I return to it every so often. Julia and Streep man, they're both just so good! And gosh Meryl is so beautiful!
Also can we talk about how impressive that pull up is?

God bless UA-cam. Who on Earth even knew this documentary existed?
WHAT!?!?!?! i have been looking for this forever!!!!!
I've watched this over and over. Absolutely brilliant.
