Indeed. I've been using MAME (casually) for almost 20 years, and this is the first time I've managed to get my head around the basic concept of split sets/merged etc.
It really comes down to the hardware. For 3D games especially, it is recommended you have at least a 3.0ghz CPU with 2 cores or higher but sometimes it can be the game itself. I always suggest checking adb.arcadeitalia.net/default.php to make sure the game doesn't have issues.
How does a front end like Launchbox deal with merged sets in comparison to non-merged? Also, let's say I want to play the 2 player version of TMNT which I believe is the UK version which allows me to select a character and I'm using a merged set (most seem to be merged these days) Will I still have that option or will I be stuck playing the parent? Finally, is it possible to take a merged set and make them into non-merged? ...if so do you have a tutorial on that?
So this is super late but I just saw this. You can use clrmamepro to convert merged roms to non-merged using rebuild option ua-cam.com/video/2mdrJ8J3Fr4/v-deo.html
ty. I've noticed that merged sets are mainly the ones available now. My only thing is using it for front end. Don't know if launchbox has done anything with this but if so that is the way I will go.
FOUR subscribers for such great, well-explained retro content? Ridiculous. Well, I'm happy to be number five :-)

@Kingsley Prince Series ? what the hell are you talking about. This is an emulation video.
Very helpful overview. Thanks.
Thank you for the video. This really helped add clarity.
A big problem I regularly face is stuttering and lagging and don't know how to fix it

Great video. Non merged roms are becoming obsolete. Merged sets are the easy ones to get now. Not to mention merged sets take up less space

outside of street fighter ex 2 I haven't had much experience with Zinc and I didn't touch any configs.
