    Toph's earthbending is based on Southern Praying Mantis style of Kung Fu, whereas most other earthbending in the show is based on a style called Hung Gar. You'll get to see more of the clear differences in the episodes to come.

      That's a good one, but my two favorites are during the Drill episode: "It's to dark! I can't see a thing!" "Oh no! What a nightmare!" And especially the Serpent's pass part 2..."Oh, well...you can go ahead and let me drown now..." •/;p

      One of my favorites is where they're looking for a library in the desert and Toph goes, "There it is!!", while pointing at nothing and when the team gives her a look of disappointment, she goes, "that's what it'll sound like when one of you spots it", and she proceeds to turn their direction, smile, and wave her hands in front of her face, reminding them she's blind lol

      @@kfactor20 This is the best blind joke in the series. Mostly because I think it tricks the audience too. Everyone hears Toph say "there it is" but I don't think a lot of us realize it was Toph and flying lmao. Its so funny

      @@kfactor20 one of my favorites too! Also, the one underground in The Drill as the commenter above yours says. I also like, in, The Runaway, with the wanted posters. I just love that Toph has so many blind jokes. It's what makes her character way more realistic than a lot of other characters with disabilities in media.
      I also love her talk with Iroh. It's when did the seed for a lot of positive change for me when I was a teen. I had a lot of trouble asking for help, and I felt weak whenever I need it, but Iroh tell me that it's OK to ask for help. Although, I do still hate when people insist on helping me, even when I don't need it, and I'm polite about denying their assistance. People be annoying sometimes.

      @@paul-juniorblack6151 I also love that most of the blind jokes aren't at Toph's expense, but her friends. I mean, there are, because we do you do stupid shit, and it is funny, but I do appreciate that they don't make Toph the butt of the ALL the time. That's unrealistic. I'm going to mount of my blind jokes at my friends and family are at their expense. For example, I always make fun of them for not being able to get around their own houses without light, or when they can't see something that most people would think obvious, stupif shit like that.
      Toph isn't perfect, for example, I wish that they'd had a little more of life skills and things like that shown, but, for 2005, this is the best I got, and I'm still happy when it 17 years later. God I feel old.

    I want to defend the name "The Blind Bandit" as it's probably a name Toph herself came up with when she was younger and thought it sounded cool which makes it perfectly excusable, or the Earthbending matches promoter thought the same for the same reason. Either way she comes and she goes, no one really knows who "The Blind Bandit" is, she is completely shrouded in mystery, much like The Undertaker was (not in terms of kayfabe) back in the 90s. Moreover, nobody knows that the Beifongs even have a daughter, so no one can associate that with a mysterious little girl who wins Earthbending matches, which Toph must have used to her advantage.

    There is a man who is a martial artist master of all the forms that the bending is based off of, who can do all of the four bending styles in the intro. They are based off of northern shoulin kung fu, tai chi, bagwa, and hun gar. Fun fact, the boulder, was original idea for the avatars earth bending teacher. They decided to go with toph instead, and make sokka more o a comic relief but alo a strategist instead of the boulder. the earthbender int he intro is the concept for the boulders character.

    • @Cheezeblade
      @Cheezeblade 7 років тому

      ok so some of it was an assumtpion, since we never actually got to the development stage, but youc an asume i think pretty safely that the MAIN earthebder in this show if it was latr inspired to be the boulder, would have ben aangs airbending teacher. i mean, its liek if they had a firebender walking around with them as a main character who ISNT teaching him firebending? they never disclosed what the concept art that would later become the boulder and changed to toph would actually DO int he show. so i put 2 and 2 together.

    For me it's so funny hearing you guys discuss how it is to be blind, because my mom is hard of seeing (if that's how you say it ;)) and slowly turning blind. because of that I know quite alot about blindness and a lot of people who are either blind or hard of seeing. My mom also works as a guide in a museum (called the muSEEum; in Dutch muZIEum) where you can get a tour in the complete dark to experience how it is to be blind for a while and you can ask anything you want to now about blindness etc to the guides who are either blind or hard of seeing. It's a great experience if there's something like that in America (sorry if my english is not perfect, I'm Dutch so ;))

    Everyone thinks that they could do without smell, but people who have actually lost their sense of smell often go into deep depression and their rate of suicide is much higher than the general population. Much more than people who have been blinded or deafened. Something about smell is almost necessary to keep our emotions working properly.

    • @pearlofthedarkage
      @pearlofthedarkage 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, it always annoys me when people think that smell is nothing. Without smell and taste, you would lose complete interest in eating. When my dad was going through chemo and radiation therapy for throat cancer, he completely lost his sense of taste, and he never had smell to begin with. He lost complete interest in eating, became extremely depressed, and later confessed he had thoughts about suicide. He survived off of drinking those nutrition shakes they give old people, and he only drank enough to sustain his basic functions. He lost over 50 pounds in just a couple of months.
      That kind of life is not sustainable, and you would either end up starving yourself to death or killing yourself. In his case, the treatments were concluded, but it took a long time for him to even regain his sense of taste even partially. It still depresses him.
      I personally hate this particular question, because most people can live without sight or sound (or even both), but living without taste, smell, and touch is life-threatening on so many levels.

    13:10 - That's a sharp observation Eric, probably one most people wouldn't have noted. The animators deliberately gave Toph a different martial art style than every other earthbender in the series to complement her unique characterisation; she didn't learn the usual moves that most do because of how and WHERE she learned it (refraining from further specifics for now...) For bonus points, all these are STILL based on real martial arts styles, since Sifu Kisu was their consultant on all the fight choreography for authenticity... o_O
    I don't know if they've yet watched it, but I can tell that Eric and the guys (will) enjoy 2x09 - because it covers some of this philosophy and the like, along with the show's usual strengths... It's also one of my personal top 10 episodes for being such a unique experience, even for a show like this; it's a breath of air which is SO well-timed in terms of the series' overall chronology, and there's some fantastic world-building based on philosophy AND characterisation (oh, and some great humour!) I don't think it gets discussed as often by most people (though it's far from forgotten), but it just really sticks out to me as an individually great episode. ;-D

    In terms of senses personally I'd go with having touch because without touch its gonna be hard to understand the world. If you had sight you would see differences in color but until you actually fell you probably wouldn't realize that you can't stand on empty space. Walking in and of itself would be hard since unless you were looking at your foot you wouldn't be able to tell if it's off the ground or not. You also wouldn't know pain which could be dangerous. You could see fire but you wouldn't feel the pain that would occur when you walked through it. You wouldn't be able to tell when your bones were broken or even had serious internal injuries. Pain may not be a nice sense but as the saying goes "pain is the best teacher".

    I am not sure if you guys knew this but each 4 nation has specific fighting styles based heavily on real life fighting styles.
    Fire nation- Northern Shaolin
    Earth Kingdom- Tai Chi
    Water Tribe- Hung Gar
    Air Nomads- Ba Gua Zhang
    Yes you are right Eric Toph fighting style is based on Southern Praying Mantis which is different from rest of the earth benders.

    I like how you noticed she has a different fighting style. All the ways the bending elements are fought are based on different martial art styles. All earth benders are based on Hung Gar style fighting, except toph, who's style is called the praying mantis. this is because she learned in a unique way compared to other earth benders, which is explained further in the series.

    Most Earthbending styles and stances are based on Hun Gar Kung Fu, while Toph's style is based on the Southern Praying Mantis style of fighting. Airbending is based on Baguazhang (Circle Walking). Waterbending is based on Tai Chi. Firebending is based on Northern Shaolin.

    The shoq runners hired a kung fu master and he choreographed all the scenes and sent video to the animators. They didn't draw over it, but they had great reference that they could look at frame by frame.

    The mind's ability to adapt is pretty amazing. My cousin lost hearing in one side a few years ago (he had a tumor removed from that area), he was given special bluetooth hearing aids where the one on his deaf side would send all the sounds to the one on his good side and his mind would learn to distinguish them as if the sound was coming through both ears normally... at least it would if the idiot would wear them but he felt too self conscious. He preferred to never know where sounds were coming from instead.
    I've also heard of an experiment where some volunteers were given glasses that made everything appear upside down, apparently it did not take very long for their brains to simply re-orient the image to appear the right way up again. Brains are weird...

    I don't know what sense I'd keep... I mean I already don't have Smell, so that's one less to choose from. Touch and Taste are great, I'd hate to lose them, but they're just not so vital to the things that matter so much to me. The decision then is between Sight and Hearing, because like... I'm an artist, and I'm a musician. Both of those senses are just so incredibly important to me that I can't decide one over the other.

    @Blindwave Toph's stand and her moves are inspired by Southern Kung fu, Chu Ka.
    you can take a look on creation of Toph's stand and her character in video called Making of Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender - Toph
    would be nice if you could include that in next reaction

    Damn. That is one very difficult choice: picking only one of the 5 senses a person has.
    1) Smell
    2) Taste
    3) Feel
    4) Sight
    5) Sound
    My guess is: I would pick *Sight*, but damn is it a difficult choice.

    So I'm just watching along with them but I was wondering. Wouldn't people have realised that Aang was airbending when he was fighting Blind Bandit and therefore linked him to being the Avatar or did they just not notice?

    • @jayiii8279
      @jayiii8279 7 років тому +5

      People wouldn't automatically assume airbending and avatar in a WWE like tournament, as hes super famous and theres only one of him in the entire world, why would he be there? Its much easier to assume it was faked for the money

    • @matthewrudolph
      @matthewrudolph 7 років тому +13

      The show animates the airbending so the audience will know. But the characters/ audience in the stadium have no idea what happened. As in real life when the wind blows you don't see the actual air current.

    I'm middle age and have a lazy/wandering eye. I can switch between them, but I can't use them at the same time. It give me no depth perception. Doctors have said to have surgery to correct it, would probably give me headaches because my body is used to one eye at a time.
