Sources for John Mark
Some things about the life of the early disciples we are left to deduce from the writings of ancient authors. Although we cannot be absolutely certain about all of their facts, they are often the best we have and reasonable conclusions can be reached. Some of these writers were born some time after John Mark and rely on oral traditions or writings we no longer have. Sometimes this can be comfortably relied upon, indeed much of our own scriptures were originally passed on faithfully through oral accounts. Conclusions I reach through such sources I try to relate to historical matters of a persons life rather than matters of theology and therefore any mistakes I make are not overly consequential.
Ancient church fathers and writers that give us insight into John Mark include:
Papias of Hierapolis
Bishop of Hierapolis b 60AD
Dionysius of Alexandria
Born in the 3rd C. And an early Pope
Eusebius
Bishop of Ceaserea in 3rd C
Clement of Alexandria
Born 150. Christian theologian and philosopher in Alexandria - Pupils include Origen
Tertullian
Born 155. Christian apologist and author based in Carthage
Origen of Alexandria
Born 184. Christian scholar and apologist. Wrote more than 2000 papers defending the gospel.
Great. I was born in Alexandria, Egypt 🇪🇬. Now, I came to know the history of the disciple John Mark. Thanks a lot.

I want to say THANK YOU so much and God bless you!
I have specifically had some questions about Mark for a while now and you are answering all of them.

The way Marc's gospel is narrated looks like it was written by a young person. It is believed Marc wrote his account of the life of Jesus when he was still in his mid 20s. He was very rich and educated and could travel back to Jerusalem by himself , then Paul indicates in his letter that Marc had "written instructions" for them. This might have included his famous action gospel!
only it wasn't written by Mark.
@@AnHebrewChild Fathers and tradition and very good sources indicate Mark wrote this short book. The first ever written account of the life of Jesus of Nazareth on or about 41 AD.
Thank you so much. I’m getting ready to read the book of Mark and was curious about who he was.
This was just lovely and answered questions I had about Mark. God bless you. 😘

They may have quarrelled, hot headed mark may have gone back to Jerusalem, to do more research about his upcoming Gospel, perhaps.,eventually writing around 50 to 60 AD...im glad to read about how Paul reconciled with mark. Mark certainly learnt a lot from Peter for his first, earliest gospel. Thanks once again. Much blessings..

What a wonderful informative account dave. I was searching youtube, for the reason why Mark left Paul and barnabas at perga on that first missionary journey. I thought that somehow Paul may have even been 'jealous' of the ambitious intentions that this young man had of writing the very first gospel about his personal friend, jesus christ. Because Mark knew jesus, ate with Him, saw jesus betrayed. Jesus probably talked and encouraged Mark. Jesus might have even told Mark that one day, God willing, you may be one of many to write about my life...!

Thank you Brian for this excellent video. Hopefully later this year (2024) I will be writing several exegetical articles about John Mark of which I will be including into my first book. Could you share the source for John Mark and his mother Mary moving to Cana? I will be including some geography in my articles and it would be helpful for me to know where that reference is from. Thank you! Also, any comment on John Mark's short stature that you wanted to include?
Excellent work thank you. am I free to writ using this as a source please?

Brian
John was the youngest of the 12 Apostles but Mark of the wider community of disciples.
Dave is a beautiful story teller, and if I were to buy a recording of the Bible, I would want it in his voice. Dave, much of the material here is not strictly Biblical. Does it come from the patristic traditions of the ancient church? Can you give us some links to these sources? Thanks.
Hi George, I have added some sources to the information section below the video. Blessings, Dave
It would be nice to know your source documents for your statements.
Hi Mark, David has put some sources in the Video Description section. If interested you can find more of his videos here. ua-cam.com/channels/dFpkrC1KRxm7Sf0itkzs3A.htmlvideos
What did paganism have to do with martyring John Mark.? It did not make sense the way you explained that ending.
Satan hates Jesus, God and the HS. Pagans are filled with satan.
Dave, do you have the reference material you used to summarize these facts about John Mark, Simon and the others from Cyrene? Your video is very informative . John Mark Schwanz
Hi, I have added some sources to the information section below the video. Blessing, Dave

Hi Robert, I have added some sources to the information section below the video. Blessing, Dave
It's said that when folks abandoned their idols due to Paul, it costs same money to those that made. I guess the same is true of Mark.
John Marc seems to be the nephew of Barnabas not his cousin , son of Barnabas' sister Mary. A very wealthy family. Marc was older than the family's servant girl Rhoda.
@@lightoftheworld5455 ,mostly word of mouth and wrote what Peter told him
Yes, this is a traditional belief which enforces he wrote his little book in his mid 20s
I dare say you may find interesting some of the historical research of the New Testament scholar Bart Erhman. His research will clash with some of your claims.
OH My
According to William Lane (1974), an "unbroken tradition" identifies Mark the Evangelist with John Mark, and John Mark as the cousin of Barnabas.
Please Give me.answer How old was Mark at the time of Jesus
Fine

St.Mark*
Why is it Paul couldn't get along with anyone? He had arguments with literally almost every person he cam across. And in his writings, he comes across as a very unlikable person. I read the Gospels and wanna cry, I read James, 1,2,3 John and 1 Peter, and those are all such beautiful writings, but then I read Paul, and it just seems.... off.
