  • Part 2 of the DIY aquarium AQUAPONICS System for my 10 Gallon Fish Tank. This video rounds out the final build and shows the system running on my fish tank. This DIY aquaponics system was built using all materials found either on Amazon or at local hardware stores and came in under $50 total!
    Items Used:
    Clay Pebbles/ Hydroten: amzn.to/2rBeBcK
    Submersible water pump: amzn.to/2Y1sRYr
    30w grow light: amzn.to/2R393Cv
    Rockwool starter cubes: amzn.to/2R38V5Z
    PVC pipe cutters : amzn.to/37RXEvm
    Window tray box grow bed: amzn.to/2QZj6si

    Update to my DIY Aquaponics fish tank system:
    • DIY AQUAPONICS Fish Ta...
    My DIY aquaponics system will be fueled by a colony of guppies, which will hopefully feed some aquaponic lettuce and spinach to start.
    I would love to get your feedback on this DIY aquaponics system, and take a look at other DIY aquaponic systems you may have produced or seen elsewhere. Make sure to subscribe for the grow log to track how well the aquaponics system grows plants!

    Look up the Bell Siphon, so it fills up, then automatically empties, giving the roots some air

    I have a similar set up in a 29 gallon, with 2 of these window sill pots. I made the fish tank lid out of plywood and built a shelf for the upper planter. Screwed a light into the bottom of the plywood and drilled a hole into the wood for the wire to run through. Then drilled a higher hole in the planter boxes on one end and lower on the other end to allow for drainage. Attached the pump line to the higher hole one the upper planter and sealed it with aquarium sealant, and the same with PVC attachments running to the second planter and then out to the lower that drains down back into the aquarium via PVC. I also used 3 inch net cups to cover up the PVC openings so the hydroton/leca wouldn’t drain into the other pot or into the aquarium. Fish are currently in the system and I’m starting bell peppers, tomatoes, cayenne peppers, kale, spinach, mustard, cress and two different kinds of basil all in Viagrow Super plugs - the bell peppers which are in net pots because I started them before beginning the system and they’re already 2 week seedlings.

    I would recommend you gravel, it will clog from time to time and therfore is a little time consuming. Also the roots will stuck to the gravel after harvest. Better use a floating technique like a raft system made out of styrofoam

    Looks nice, good job. Been doing indoor aquaponics for a few years now. I switched from media to dwc to make it easier to clean and manage anaerobic zones that develop in the media. Air flow is key out in CA because we have bacterial spot disease that will find you no matter what you do. So you may think about adding a small fan to keep air moving around the plants. I use t5ho and find 2 bulbs per row of leafy greens to be sufficient so if the LED is similar ppfd then it should be fine at around 10 hours/day (i like hydrofarm mechanical timers). In my system, i find it starts to work respectably at 5ppm excess system nitrate, and works really well at a stable 40ppm nitrate. Bright agrotech has some videos up about supplemental dosing. DTPA Iron chelate helps a lot in my system but tints the water yellow. Our water here is very low tds, so i bump KH to 4-6degrees using potassium bicarbonate. I bump GH to a similar 4-6degrees using a hardness buffer composed of MgSO4, K2SO4, and CaSO4. At system maturity of stable 40ppm nitrate fully planted i have to add a bit of potassium bicarb to keep the ph from crashing. Spinach has never worked for me, i think running at 78F has been just too hot for it. Lettuce does well as does basil and other herbs. Lettuce is easier to start systems ime since it is less sensitive to ph. Ive had success with lettuce at ph up to 7.6, but basil underperforms until you are stable at 7.0 and it seems to want 6.8 and dirtier water than lettuce. Be patient and have fun! Aquaponics takes time to mature and get right. Hydro is immediate and is easy to get wrong.

      Wow, I really appreciate the informative and experience filled response. I did go into this system knowing I will need to clean it out every once in a while, but still see how the substrate works for a few grows. The information you provided is superrrrr helpful for me and I will definitely use it going forward. I just came back from my work trip and the plants have EXPLODED since being out into the system about 10 days ago. I know the system may be vulnerable to bacteria but will try to monitor it. I’ll be making a video to show the progress, and an also setting up some hydroponic grows using the kratky method so looking forward to learning that as well!

    • @One_more_cast
      @One_more_cast  4 роки тому

      Also, looks like the spinach hasn’t taken off like the lettuce (my ph is around 7). It doesn’t look bad just still slow but will definitely keep your ph recommendation in mind if it continues to get worse

    • @DanDannyDanielleBob

      @@One_more_cast for me, ph and temperature has been tough for spinach in aquaponics. I typically get some germination and spindly growth and then it stalls out, right next to lettuce that is doing well. From what i understand, spinach is more heat sensitive than lettuce, and needs a ton of iron. You can google image search "ph vs nutrient availability in hydroponics" and there will be some useful infographics. You are not doomed to disease. Its usually pretty manageable. I was trying to emphasize the need for air movement in an indoor environment. You are basically trying to grow field crops in a jungle (stagnant moist air). Any form of hydro allows you to get away from soil borne pests/diseases and weeds, but then you need to manage nutrients, ph carefully. Move indoors and you get rid of bad weather and most pests (and their predators), but now you need to manage air movement, temperature, humidity, and light. Its all a tradeoff. You will learn how to deal with problems as they arise. Books can help trim out some of the nonsense and hearsay of the internet. Best to listen to folks who do it for a living/have money on the line not just selling classes and arm chair qb. Unfortunately all of the standard best practices ive been able to find have been mostly hydroponics since it is a huge and established industry/science. Aquaponics not so much. After years of doing aquaponics i am moving toward decoupled aquaponics. I am just now starting my first experiments by using fish tank water from water changes in a deep water culture hydro system with added nutrients and more active ph adjusting than i can do in aquaponics. Good luck!

    My question is if you glued the PVC pipes together, or if you did a dry fit? And if so, did they ever incur any leaks? Thanks for letting me know in advanced!

    • @One_more_cast
      @One_more_cast  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the question! I used 100% silicone on the pvc to make sure it would be waterproof, however given that the system never experienced a lot of pressure I think dry fit wouldn’t leak either.

    How many guppies do you keep in the tank? I am wanting to start something up as well, but was planning a slightly smaller growbed for a 20 or 29 gallon tank... so I am looking for a ratio of fish to growbed space. :D Also, what tank maintenance do you do for the guppies? I know that the aquaponics setup is supposed to act as a filter of sorts, but I don't know if I should add an actual filter as well.
    Your video was very helpful, thanks a lot!

    • @One_more_cast
      @One_more_cast  4 роки тому

      Glad you got something out of it! So I started with 5, but guppies multiply very rapidly so I try to keep the number below 15 or so just so they don’t overcrowd the tank and to make sure they stay healthy. Seems to work fine for the plants. I’ m going to opt to keep a secondary hang on back filter as well just for my price of mind. Good luck building your own system!

    that system is dangerous , the drain pipes can get clog easy and theres no overflow system to have that under control
