- This is the first episode that Bill Anderson appears on.
Today's Panel: Bill Anderson, Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Bonnie Franklin, Richard Dawson, and Fannie Flagg
The answers to "name in lights" are hilarious 😂😂😂😂
I said this before, and I'll say it again. Bill Anderson and Bob Barker could be twins!
Fannie always brightens my day! She's a riot!
Brett ate a lot of lead as a kid
The Name in Lights question was a variation of the old joke, "Pete wanted his name to appear in every theatre on Broadway - so he changed his name to EXIT".
I thought “open “
Despite the fact that I'm a liberal rock & roller, and Bill Anderson is a conservative country star, I like him. He's funny, and engaging, and not a bad player. And I looked up that song, "Sometimes," that's a really good song! If only Elvis Costello had covered it.
Whisperin' Bill Anderson. 81 years old. Always seemed like a very decent sort of fellow! Enjoyed him on Match Game.
The contestant’s baby is now middle aged
Thanks for making my day. LOL. I hate to think what that makes me. Oh, but at least Bill Anderson and Fannie are still with us.
damn you
I was thinking the same thing.
That baby is now about 45 years old!!

H/H match update and preview of the week ahead:
...
This is week 136 (of 291) for our favorite classic game show. These episodes were taped on February 22, 1976 and first aired in late March of 1976.
This week's panel finds our three stalwart regulars all in their places with bright, shiny faces. Plus:
~~Semi-regular Fannie Flagg is back in the sixth seat after a three-week absence.
~~Bonnie Franklin returns for her second week (of 4), having made her debut in episode 636. She wasn't selected for the H/H match her first week. (She finally receives her "welcome" kiss from Gene, who had a bit of a cold that week when Bonnie first appeared.)
~~Bill Anderson is the new kid on the block this time, in what will be his first of six weeks matching contestants (or not, we'll see) from that first seat.
Commentary:
Looking at the week ahead, my number one wish this week is for Fannie to get another shot at the H/H. She's earned a 52.6% success rate so far, but that's based on only 19 attempts. I'd love to see her accumulate more data. Considering how often she appears on Match Game (she's #4 on the list, behind only the three regulars), I would expect her to be chosen more. Perhaps what hurts her are her occasional wacky "sixth-seat" answers (the sixth-seat celebs are expected to spice things up by adding a bit of variety and weirdness to the mix instead of always following the crowd). Also, her audience match suggestions are sometimes less than helpful, which I think discourages some contestants from choosing her.
A second wish would be for Brett and/or Charles to see some H/H action. Brett has matched 4 of her past 5 attempts, so it'd be interesting to see if she continues improving her score, or if she falls back below Richard with a couple of misses. (At this point, Brett is far enough ahead that I don't think Richard can catch up solely by matching - the only way he can overtake Brett again is if she misses a few to drop her score back down.)
And CNR hasn't played since 631 and 628 (both matches). Even worse, before that, we have to go back to 537, 536, and 532 (all three misses) to find episodes when he participated in the H/H. So we're talking almost 150 episodes and he's only played 5 times! Again, I think his sometimes weird and sometimes unhelpful audience match suggestions tend to hurt his chances of being selected. Still, his overall H/H success rate is a full 7 percentage points higher than Richard's, so he's definitely able to pull off a big-money match!
My final wish is the same as for every week: to see some variety and excitement in the H/H match. Maybe Bonnie Franklin and/or Bill Anderson could get a shot?
Well, let's hope for an entertaining week no matter what happens on the H/H front!
~~~Today's action:
Our reigning champion easily wins her fourth game (she didn't even need to answer a second round question).
Today's audience match question: "Shirley ________ " (Temple has got to be the #1 answer.)
The celebs: Richard (Temple), Bonnie (Knight), and Bill (Jones)
The choice: Temple
The answers: Booth, Jones, Temple
Our unpredictable champ chose Richard the first time (no match), Clifton Davis the second time (match), and Patty Duke Astin the third time (no match). With that history of choices for the H/H match, it's fun to speculate on who she might choose this time. I notice that she continues her practice of calling on a wide variety of celebs for suggestions, asking Bonnie and Bill this time (leaving Fannie as the only celeb she hasn't called on yet). But she chose Richard first and wisely took his answer, so I have a feeling that she's going to give him another shot.
Yes, this is the sixth consecutive week that Richard gets the first shot at the H/H match. He's matched 3 of his 11 most recent attempts.
Today's H/H question: "_______ Hutch"
(I don't like this one. I thought of rabbit hutch, but I feel like there's something more obvious.)
Richard, however, begins to write immediately, and it looks like at least five letters. He files the card without hesitation.
The champion is shaking her head. She looks disheartened, which is understandable after winning four games, but earning comparatively little prize money (only $2,500 so far) overall. "All I can think of is china," she says. I was also trying to think of some kind of furniture thingie for hutch, but couldn't come up with one. China hutch, though, doesn't sound likely to me. Still, you never know. Richard has matched odder answers in the past...
The audience vocalizes disappointment in her answer. Richard displays his typical poker face, so no clues there...
Gene calls on Mr. Dawson: No patter at all, just a cold, direct reveal of "Rabbit."
No match today.
Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts).
TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
Fannie - 52.6% (10 wins in 19 attempts).
Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts).
Charles - 47.7% (21 wins in 44 attempts).
Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
Brett - 41.8% (23 wins in 55 attempts).
Richard - 40.5% (158 wins in 390 attempts).
Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
*These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 676, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
I am glad Brett and Charles were friends,they make the show fun to watch.
I was thinking "Starsky and" for "Hutch."
Yeah, can't believe that wasn't even mentioned. I checked the Internet and it started in 1975, so it wasn't unknown.
This actually wasn't Bill Anderson's first appearance on a game show. He was the subject on an episode of "To Tell the Truth" sometime in the 60s I believe.
Yea but this is Bill's 1st appearance on the Match Game as a panelisti though
My choice for "Name in lights": Howard Johnson. Richard's "WALK" was the best mentioned!
Grog & Og dinosaur question: Wife is the first thing that came to my mind
CNR is so funny.
I just loved Bonnie Franklin n her show one day at a time I really miss both n Fannie is my favorite
"I gave up drinking, so I can't say 'club'!" ~ Charles
4. Bonnie Franklin
5. Richard Dawson
6. Fannie Flagg
gene said challenger when he meant champ....
The bottom tier is very color coordinated.
@16:13 I thought I was hearing the intro tune for Pac Man
But Brett is so annoying, especially for a Canadian.
Bob got his "zipper" caught on Shirleys' braces!!! Too risqué for the times perhaps?
Definitely.
maybe, but I was thinking the same thing
Wait -- Amy Klobuchar was a Match Game contestant?
Always thought that Bonnie Franklin was cute
I was partial to Valerie Bertinelli.
Fannie's renowned spelling ability: Wemom is supposed to be Women. (15:49)
She's dyslexic
Fannie is dyslexic she didn't know until someone called her after watching. I know spelling doesn't count on the show but check your facts.
@@proud_brettsomersfanclub8687 Joyce Bulifant and Bill Daly also suffered from dyslexia. In fact Bulifant has a foundation to help those with the condition.
I always figured she was being silly. She has written books and a screen play, which would've been hard to do back then. Nowadays we have lots of technology to support dyslexic people.
@@damonstandifer3236 Joyce Bulifant was adorable.
Can anyone explain the Pete joke to me?
Pete wanted to see his name in lights, which usually refers to a movie or Broadway star's name being in lights (edit: lights on a marquee or sign outside the theater) because they're the star of the show. However, Pete changed his name to [blank], so the panel gave answers of names or words that are in lights, one way or another. I hope that helps.
@@LynxSouth I still don't get it.
Name up in lights - EXIT
To get his bride through the door, he had to fold her in half.
I thought this was a repeat question. I seem to recall the most answers were grease or oil her. Mandela effect?
Deflate
@@rogeebundy6002 yes that's what I though. Deflate.
Brett would rather the contestant lose than Richard be right.NASTY JEALOUS!
Bull dust. Leave Brett alone. You're a horrible pig Cecilia.
😮
Omg...what crappy consolation gifts.. you go on a game show, lose and come away with no money and you get Flat text enamel as a consolation gift? Too funny..lol 😂😂😂😂
Free is free. I think it's nice that game shows/sponsors give any gifts at all to losing players.
It wouldn’t have been so bad if you were a local. If you were someone who’d made a cross country trip to be a contestant it would be aggravating!
What about the fashion footwear from Kinney Shoes? Wouldn't that put a spring in your step? lol
