Think of the blood that flows through our bodies and red blood cells in particular. What are they using to carry oxygen to our cells? Hemoglobin, which is dependent on iron. If, as some of the religious say, we were made from clay, it must have been iron rich clay.
This is my logic behind why this pigment would be perfect for subsurface scattering! I use it in watercolor and I don't have enough experience to say how it would work in oil, but I would bet it would do well in oil too. It's fascinating that anything iron is technically colored most accurately with iron. It's as if it can't be truly mimicked. We may come close and exceptions can be made with context of varying pieces, but as a whole, it seems like iron can only be truly painted with iron lol.
Talk about learning something new every day! I never knew that yellow ochre was the same as yellow iron oxide! I stopped the video and went to check my tubes! Yes! Thanks!❤
This was the exact same issue I had, my colors were always too saturated. The change was dramatic after I switched to burnt sienna/ burnt umber etc for the base color, and lighten them with white
I have found that using pure white to lighten will make my colors too chalky. A tip I got that I now use is to first mix the white with a really small amount of yellow, then mix it. It will still lighten it but won't be chalky. You can do the same thing with a bit of light blue or light red, or green etc, depending on the hue of the color you're wanting to lighten.
one of the best tutorials I've ever seen you pointed on things really people are fighting on like the titanium white and flake white Hahahaha, your knowledge in colors are incredibly awesome, it was very interested to me and it changed my perspective on these earthy colors.
Very interesting. I also struggle a bit with nailing the perfect skin colors, so I will certainly give your method a try in the next portret. Thanks for sharing!
This concise discourse on the best pigments for creating skin tones, not only lists which ones are naturally closest, but explains why. Another segment to add to my growing color theory knowledge bank. Merci beaucoup, Florent!
I totally get the point about the Lamborghini thing, I'm a Cuban artist, and Cuba is a poor country so I got to struggle to get some good pigments ,but what really matters is to understand the pigments and the color theory and of course make the most of the materials you have and dare to find new solutions to your tasks
I hope you got a jolly mocking my sincere comment to Florent. He doesn’t have to take the time and effort to make high quality videos that help others advance their skills, and I’m obviously not alone in recognizing his immense talents and generosity. I choose words carefully to be succinct, but you go right ahead and LYFAO at the way I express my appreciation, so that everyone who reads these comments, forever, can see.
It’s such a pity that flake (lead) white has been banned from Europe. Titanium white is an excellent color for painting large surfaces like barn doors, but for any kind of artistic expression it should be treated with great reserve. The color is simply way too opaque, too overwhelming; it smoothers any color that it is mixed with. However, one can tame the beast by mixing titanium white with zinc white - the most transparent of all the whites. Zinc white is the purest white, its only fault is its fragility. When mixed with titanium white, zinc white reduces the opacity of the former and makes for a more usable white color. Very interesting video, one of the best I’ve seen so far on mixing skin tones. Best wishes from lead-free France.
After seeing your video i bought PR101 and PY42, but they still came out not looking like in the video. Especially the PY 101 was not orangy, but red transparent, especially noticable after mixing with white. Tube said Red Ochre, Transparent and only PR 101 pigment.Got delivered, mixed with white and it llooks like the Transparent version of the Venetian Red you showed. 🤦♀️ Wasted money since really don't know for what i would use such a muted color. Could you please share which brand Red Transparent Oxide paint you used in the video? It would really help me out!! Don't want to buy again a red outcome PR 101, oilpaints too expensive. ❤
Yes but skin also contains green and blue colours, that does not appear in this pallet. And I am not talking about the shadow colours or colours that reflect on the skin.
Does this mixing method also work if using Acrylics, instead of oil paints; or do I have to tweak / adjust this method with Acrylics? [I only paint with Nova Acrylics].🤯
This presumably is if you are striving to be a realist artist? Otherwise there are no rules really to mixing and or using colour so long as one understands the basics of colour wheels and more importantly value studies?
This is one of the best videos I have ever watched on skin tones. And I have watched a lot. Thank you.
Wow, thank you! Glad it was helpful.
This is a perfect video. Perfect. Thank you for always including the pigment number. ;)
Excellent video! I thought I knew all there was to know about color mixing . . . well, I was quite wrong! Thank you for such great advice!
Oops! Now you've done it. The secret's out! Great video, Florent!
Thank you very much 😎🎨

11:32 Another term for LOCAL COLOR is diffused color (within the diffused light area).
Thank you, Florent, for this. You are a light.

Your knowledge is vast and you are so generous to share it. I don’t paint portraits but this is valuable and interesting information. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
This sounds like something you would say to a king before you ask that he spares your family from a famine or something lmfao

I use the same method too. Also the added Titanium white helps reduce the very quick drying time of Zinc white.
Merci !
Excellent video! Thanks so much👍😎
Glad you liked it!
Amazing.
Thanks!
This was amazing
Thank you so much ! 😊🎨🧑🎨
Thank you so much this video is very appreciated bingo
Wonderful and informative video! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. Your work is a great inspiration to me! 16:34
Please tell me the name of the application you’re using to grab those colors from the surface of Mars. Thank you!
Hello, I notice you dont use zinc white very often. Is there a reason for?? Thank you

Florent did you plan to be perfectly framed in the mirror behind you?? that's very "marriage of Arnolfini" by Van Eyck, and if you did its genius!!
full pigment nerdy ha ha ha ! good one !
Yep, it's time to admit it: I'm a pigment nerd! 😉🤓
Does this mixing method also work if using Acrylics, instead of oil paints; or do I have to tweak / adjust this method with Acrylics? [I only paint with Nova Acrylics].🤯
Yes it does, I'm only talking about the colors here so it works regardless.
It works also with acrylics, and they mix faster than oils, so you will get the colors faster.
This is ideal video for artists lol bc if you just buy more art supplies your art will improve

Nobody uses black to darken, or really at all. You can make a much better "black" by mixing a dark blue and brown.
There is a good side to taking a Lamborghini to get groceries.
Why the Shadow is black ,
it's not the Black if you close to feel that
