Hey Fleadh, my great-grandad emigrated from County Cork to North Carolina way back. I'm a 60-year old Yank retired music teacher and experienced in many forms of music/ensembles...except Celtic and folk. Then a week ago to the day I had an epiphany, spurred by a random listening experience to Richard Thompson (Fairport Convention) leading to Sandy Denny, Anne B., Cara D., Caitlin G., Sinead O., Van M., and finally to the Grand Master and my fave new 'Orange-a-tang' Loreena McKennitt. The old traditional Irish (Celtic?) folk tune I can't stop thinking about and sounding in my mind, and one the above artists all have in common, is 'She Moved Through the Fair'! Eerily beautiful with simple but evocative poetry...then set to various arrangements and small ensemble performances that have simulated my Irish DNA! Cara's live version with Solas is SO good, too! Add a little bass and the Tin Whistle and she knocks it outa the park! (I gotta get me one of them whistles...and a bottle of Jameson's to boot! LOL) Is it OK for me to be Irish now...or semi-Irish? I'm light-skinned/hair, freckles, sunburn easy (without tanning - I'm SO lucky!) Point is - that folk tune and the implication that one of the lovers to be wed has already departed this Earth...her feet made no din when she walks...that's good stuff! And what, 2 or 3 centuries or more ago imagined by a creative Irishman!? Just awesome! I'm shelving the Blues, Rock, Jazz, honky-tonk, and my Telecaster for a while so I can focus on more good new acoustic folksy music! (BTW, if you and any readers of this comment have not seen Richard Thompson's '1000 Years of Popular Music' you need to drop what you're doing immediately and check it out! Great variety of music and he's a witty hoot, too!) Cheers!
If anyone is looking for a cheap whistle I would strongly recommend a Clarke Sweetone. I think they cost less than $10 US dollars. For a cheap whistle they are in tune and play pretty well.
