Some great points. Esp the alternate placement of the nails/screws through to the horizonal back batten.
Should have hung the hinges on the house side (more solid brickwork than a 9" garden wall) and put the braces the other way.
Surely if the brace is 53° that's supporting it better? Level is 0° and vertical is 90° so doesn't it need to be 45° or more? Surely the brace on the gate in the video is 37° ?
Great tips I'll be attepting to make 2 off 4 x 6 gates wish me luck
If that's the height of the gate and the width, how much control does the joiner have over the angle of the brace, it's predetermined by the height and width is it not?
No, not if done correctly. I would have had one brace as opposed to two. One brace running from the top corner to the bottom corner, splicing through the middle ledge. That way, you reduce the angle of the brace. Another thing you could do is to move the two braces in from the edge of the gate to reduce the angles of both braces.
I would now fit some galvanised straps or even a timber plate to give it some more strength.
❤❤it 😊😊
About to make a gate so thanks for the tips Aaron
Hi mate like the show.... cost of gate to buy vs cost of gate you build, was that the reason he bought the gate
Hiha hope alls well bud am one of your new followers. What kind of money wood you charge for the like of his gate if you were to make and fit?.... all the best
It's just a gate it's doing its job what's all the fuss
He's right in what he's saying, looks ok now but because the braces are wrong in a few years the gate will start too sag
If he has kids and they start swinging on the gate then it will sag even quicker.
It's better to put one brace from top to bottom at just less than
45%.
Durability. Imminent Sag is not going to keep it as a gate. It'll end up as a barrier
You didn't clearly show how you staggered the screws in the other video.
Tips were great and I know you're not a professional video maker but can I make 2 constructive criticisms?
1. plan what you're going to say before you start or have your words written on cards behind the camera. This will cut out the ums and ahs and other pauses.
2. stop talking with your hands - it's a bit distracting.
Just like your video, I hope these simple tips will make the finished product so much better
👍
He he .. as the film director said to Vincent Price ..’stop moving your hands about ‘ .. ( Vincent Price answered ‘Young man I have made 140 films … how many have you made ? ‘ .. to which the director replied ‘ one but it was good ‘ ….
bet the LL made it
The brace angle is fine, it's over 45 degrees, if it was under 45 degrees then that would be a problem.
