Navajo Teachings: Why Gold is Worthless

  • In the traditional teachings there are four basic metals. The Black Metal, The Blue Metal, The Yellow Metal, and the White Metal.
The Blue metal serves as a reminder of the Blue World... the place before the Yellow World.
The White Metal is symbolic of the Fourth World.
But the Yellow Metal... The Third world. This metal has caused a lot of problems for our Diné (Navajo People).
While the Yellow pollen can give life... the yellow minerals can take life.
From the Spaniards obsession with gold to the uranium mines...

No primitive people, no Indian or aboriginal is less intelligent that the first European they encountered.
The only difference IMO was technology. The story is actually pretty sly. The elders, familiar with human nature as that has since the 1st day never changed, got rid of what they no doubt saw as a problem not by force of arms but with a story. And it worked. Very sly.
How many fables, stories, morality plays and family histories are filled with lessons against greed. Human nature never changes.

And without life to utilize such resources, they hold absolutely no inherent value. Which is why what the man speaks hold a lot of truth if one possesses the wisdom to truly hear and understand. When he calls gold worthless, it feels as though he's speaking comparatively. Same with uranium. ESPECIALLY with uranium Compared to the death and destruction wrought by the desire, or in the latter case, the utilization, neither are worthy of our attention in the way they've captivated us for so long. And neither are worth the lives they've both taken, directly or indirectly, in droves.
Just like there can be one infinity greater than another, I believe that one priceless thing can be more priceless than another. And it's very difficult to place a price on a human life. At least one that truly reflects the worth of one. All I can definitively say is that when stacked up against each other, a chunk of inert metal truly does become of no value next to a human being. Law, philosophy, craftsmanship, architecture, poetry, music. All made by mankind. Ore of any kind creates or becomes nothing of true use unless we will it.
And that final statement of the previous paragraph is why no man, woman, or child should die due to the pursuit of gold. Gold is just a worthless hunk of unworked material without us.

Silver is used as much if not more in electronics, probably due to the lower cost. It allows for much more electrical conductivity for the size over copper, which is why electronic devices can be so small today. Because metal becomes a medium of exchange.
It's what first allowed someone to focus their talents into something, and be able to sustain themselves.
For instance, I was a good hunter but an awful shelter builder gold provided liquidity in labor exchange.
I could sell what I hunted and pay gold to get a shelter.
Think of metal as stored labor and value that can transform into anything of equal value that was put in the retrieve it.

@@MrSirFluffy that's an EXTREMELY privileged point of view, friend. Food is NOT plentiful in MANY parts of the world. You wouldn't trade atmospheric oxygen for anything because it is available to everyone for no price. Now, whether that oxygen is of good quality is for another conversation. My point remains that food should be of more value than metals. Yes metals can be used and that is why I acknowledge they should be used for trade but metals will not do you any good when you are starving or dehydrated and no one wants to trade.

Many people say that gold primarily belongs in the Earth, and its greatest value is within the Earth. I wonder if there was a warning inherent in this, to not place too much external/superficial value on gold, lest its true value or essence be forgotten. Perhaps traditional teachings reflect this by not using it as ornamentation--it almost has a "forbidden fruit" connotation in the sense that it is considered very beautyful and is often used to symbolize love, and yet this turns into greed and terrible things have been done in order to hoard it. Similar in a way to how "love" and marriage came to represent possession and objectification (for so many colonizers) rather than true partnership... So much gold has been removed from the Earth now, I wonder if perhaps spiritual people may feel more of a need to re-connect with its essence in physical form when once that wasn't the case. Gold is also very important in alchemy, which is a form of spiritualized chemistry, and it is my personal belief that the true essence of gold is deep in our souls and the soul of the Earth, but the physical world can make us feel separated from this source...which is the tragedy of these wars of "disinheritance" waged over gold, and a mirror for the way materialism has replaced spiritual connection to the Earth. The story of the Midas touch also comes to mind. It is as you say: life-giving, and also life-taking.

Perhaps you have taken things out of context. It's ok. Please don't take it personally. Wally was discussing the reasons gold have a negative aspect and why the Navajo value silver. I shared my appreciation of the latter. "Semi precious" or "cold, dead" are words you chose. Are you interested in gold, silver, lashing out, or my description? Are you offended for gold?
Gold and silver can be cold, hot, or any temp in between. The properties change with each range.

Simultaneously it needs a harsh almost toxic soil to grow. If you don't wear thick gloves your flesh will be punctured and shredded. Roses are one of the most coveted flowers.
Everything possesses it's unique qualities and how we interpret them as well.

Stay away from that area, even our people don't go near that place. For hunting or fishing it is forbidden. I asked him why? He replied it has Bad Spirits in the land and no good will come from being there. All these years later after talking to former employees of Uranium mines. I dont like the polarization of greed, all peoples have that temptation. I am of spanish and navajo/apache descent and my family tell me of both kindness and wrong doing on bothsides. We have met many white folks who have defended us when we were being discriminated against. Sorry for the long winded post. Something i feel just is never said.

@@Ishonomercy_ it’s interesting to get the side of the story from Native American prospective. We have all the opportunities now in 21 century with the Internet and global access/distribution to educate each other historically, culturally, factually & speak out. regarding greed I would not say that we all have that temptation. greed is mostly associate with the ‘west”…ironically or justifiably… the more someone see in existence around them the more they want. normal “greed” = desire to acquire something is normal & necessary to live. such as desire to have shelter/home/place to live, desire to have food, etc. the problem is when greed becomes criminal like wanting to rob, to kill to get something, stalk across the planet to rob & rob even more in every possible way…. it’s not a “greed” anymore it’s criminal/crime out of envy & greed. We have number of saying regarding this such as: ‘you can not take it with you,” “greedy is double looser”… extremely undesirable temptation/behavior which is behind most of the crimes & criminal activities worldwide. starting with colonization & slavery. let me tell you more about “greed” and the high power spirit regarding greed - person who is not greedy somehow it gets it everything they need & “want” that the greedy (criminals) then, want to kill them for….?!…. how is that?

Gold is really useful for anti-corrosive plating. Only requires plating a few atoms thick.
The anti-corrosion qualities are why it was favoured for sculptures, weights and coins.

They way he speaks about it is probably just true for his specific tribe and clan.
Same way he says the yellow/gold color can be seen as that which also brings death is true for the other 3 colors as well. I mean, we were killed by pale faced people, all around the world, a pale face is a sign of death to indigenous peoples.
I think this guy is an agent, our gold being stolen was literally one of the big aspects that destroyed our people. And he talks as if we barely cared about gold.
Silver literally only became as precious as it is to us AFTER the invaders introduced it to us in larger amounts. Copper and gold are the main metals to ancient Americans.

Gold is not the best conductor, silver is followed by copper. Gold is NOT very anti-microbial copper and silver are. Gold is valuable because it is rare, and does not corrode. If you are looking for metals strictly from a utilitarian point of view copper, silver, and good iron/steel are way more important.
