While this is my first time hearing of agar, I think it really puts into perspective how much we as humans interact with bacteria and how much we come into contact with it. Additionally I was shocked because up until now I thought you could only see bacteria through a microscope.

These are colonies, giant clumps of bacteria, from waht i know.
to actually see them you need to have a microscope, but you can see some colonies with the naked eye
I mean we do live in a microbial word.
Well of course bacteria is microscopic in size, which is why we let it grow into colonies that become big enough for the human eye to see. The bacteria was there to start with, we just need it to grow as a colony to see it without the microscope.

I'm seeing a lot of fungus, which is normal but some of it could be because there was no heat source like an alcohol burner near the cooling solidifying agar, this prevents contamination from anything other than what you picked up with cotton swabs, but in this case I guess it's alright since he's not looking for anything specific

I'll be soon attempting to grow colonies using Guar Gum powder rather than agar. Guar Gum powder has been studied & found to be as good in most scenarios, & better in some scenarios, than agar, & is WAY cheaper. Any plant-based thickening agent SHOULD work, some just work better than others.
In the longest running evolution experiment (34 years at the time of this comment, I think) E. coli was grown using sugar as the sole energy source (until the E. coli evolved to also eat the citrate that was in the solution). Microbes can survive on extremely simple diets. The benefit of nutrient agar is that it is formulated to be a very good growth medium. But most mediums should be successful in growing bacteria, if a bit slower.
