- Another year, another betrayal on mass migration.
The ONS has announced the latest legal migration numbers, at 672,000. I’d say these numbers are shocking. But we shouldn’t be shocked. In fact, importing hundreds of thousands of migrants - and smashing new records for the level of inward migration into the UK - has been par for the course for the Conservative Government.
Rishi Sunak has sought to style himself as a different kind of politician, breaking away from the chaos of the Truss and Johnson years. But when it comes to our borders, he’s the perfect continuity candidate.
It’s been politically useful for the government to give the impression that they take net migration seriously: take the appointment (and removal) of Suella Braverman as Home Secretary, dubbed “Cruella” by the Left-wing press for her seemingly tough stances on border control.
But Suella Braverman’s rhetoric turned out to be just that - rhetoric. Measured on the numbers, she proved herself to be the most pro-immigration Home Secretary the country has ever had.
Boris Johnson - the hero who oversaw our withdrawal from the European Union, and our last directly elected prime minister - bears a significant proportion of blame for today’s figure. After all, it was under his leadership that the state relaxed many of the visa requirements responsible for our current surge.
The introduction of the social care visa, reduction of the salary threshold for workers, and relaxation of student visas have all contributed to today’s number. Yes, the party of ‘taking back control’ managed to triple immigration from our pre-Brexit peak.
Mass immigration has fundamentally transformed Britain. In 1991, around 7 per cent of people living in Britain were born abroad. According to our latest census data from 2021, that share has risen to 16.8 per cent.
This transformation has always been pursued without public consent - and in many instances operated in direct opposition to it. No government since 1997 has been elected on anything other than a platform of controlling legal migration. And yet, within months of taking office, their manifesto promises would be unceremoniously shelved.

@@roddieglossop3942 After Brexit the entry visas were relaxed to fill up job vacancies - because Europeans working in the UK left and far fewer arrived - this particularly affected Health Service as European nurses etc no longer were attracted to work in UK. The government cares about filling job vacancies and not the long term demographic effects of mass immigration - they don't care. The government is making such a fuss over the Channel boats to make it look like it is tough on immigration while actually allowing in many, many, many times as many people - it's all optics to politicians.

One of my family members lied on the student application and managed to Bering her parents and her disabled brother. Then hired lawyers to gain citizenship. I complained four times and Home Office just ignored my complaints

We were its instigators; we were founding members and we have been members ever since. The ECHR has nothing to do with the EU. And no, of course we shouldn’t renounce it. So many Indians also taking the illegal route and boats across the channel. Indians fly into France Germany and then pay smugglers for the boat trip.

This claim doesn't make sense. If they can fly to France why wouldn't they fly to England directly instead of risking the dangerous boat trip? The people crossing in boats are doing it because they wouldn't get let on a plane. If Sunak wanted to facilitate people coming from India to work I'm sure he could find a way to get then visas so they didn't have to do it illegally. It's illegal to employ people who don't have a work visa. Employers have a legal requirement to check and keep copies of their documents. Any business employing large numbers of illegal immigrants would be risking serous punishments. If Sunak was linked to it there would be huge scandal. His wife is a billionaire. They don't need the money. Why would they risk it? This makes no sense.

I do agree that the economy should be measured according to GDP per capita not total GDP. Per capita is what matters to people and would be a fairer measure. Increasing it by allowing more immigration is cheating.

Civil servants need to do their job.
Home Office civil servants believe their job is to let as many immigrants into the country as humanly possible.
They have no regard for the impact on housing, the health service, education or the cost to the taxpayer.
The government and successive Home Secretaries do nothing to control the Home Office.

Im a speech/ language/ dysphagia therapist (from Germany) and would love to live and work in the UK . But it is just so difficult.....so no thanks. If i ever again consider moving to an english speaking country i move to Ireland and put my professional abilities into use there. And i read the RCSLT report about almost 25 % too little therapists in UK and people have to wait months for treatment....good luck when a loved one has had a stroke. Its just sad😢 😢

The highest number of visas issued this year alone be it family tourist or student have been to Indians. All the European visas have been replaced by Indians. Suella had a problem with that but Sunak muffled any dissent by sacking Suella. Indian media have been quick to criticise Suella but not Sunak. His parents are originally Indian but Sunak must look after Britain since his parents chose Britain over The Punjab to migrate. Am of Indian origin too and when I came to the UK my mother was only allowed to visit me every few years but Immigration and Border Controls were severe.

The issue is the uk needs mass migration to pay for all the people on benefits the uk voted out of the eu as they could not get work yet people never went to work. So now the uk needs migrants to pay in tax and ni and the visa and nhs charges to pay for benefits and the nhs.

We didn’t leave the European Union. To do that we would have followed Gerard Batten’s eminently reasonable advice and repealed the 1972 Communities Act, and readapted our... OUR laws accordingly over time.

It was the Telegraph that received from Boris Johnson both remain and leave articles whilst he pondered which stance to adopt for maximum leverage.
Northampton has a population of 250,000 so these figures (the revised 745k) represent three towns the size of Northampton, which is the largest town not to be afforded city status.
To put this into context.
In the past three months I have read that our population has risen ahead of France and that France builds 400k homes a year to our 220k.
The question was asked as to why we cannot reach such a figure?
Sophism rules everywhere, so I will add to it.
France has twice the land mass of the UK. The logic is therefore we are building ample for our size.
We must take in immigrants from Hong Kong, who are British despite anyone saying differently.
We must also take in Ukrainians and Afghans too.
However, most of the people coming are to take up low paying jobs in care.
The government has so messed up our finances that the option of paying British people (more) to take these roles is never presented.
This cannot go on indefinitely. It only suits those that have property as investment that there are masses of people that need accommodation at whatever price.
Warning, do remember that Labour told us there was no need to delay the movement of Poles and Romanians when they joined the EU as both Germany and France did. Why? Because only 11,000 would be coming.

Very good points. I'm not from the UK, but we have much the same problems here (Denmark).. A bit difficult to see how exactly this immigration benefits us, everything considered. Makes me not respect the politicians that much. Seems to me they are mostly clueless, not caring, have the wrong belief-system etc.

Britain pulled out of the EU largely because of the lack of control over mass illegal migration by economic migrations and the EU's unwillingness to stem the tide. If Rishi does not take swift and effective action to end this human tidal wave it will be the end of Rishi as a politician and the end of the Conservative Party.
Legal migration levels need to be capped at a sustainable level which is something less than 0.1% of the current population. Try improving the birth rate by with tax incentives and support for families to reduce the need for immigration to sustain the population.
Illegal migration will NOT end until Britain and EU changes their laws and allows rapid processing of these economic migrants and equally rapid return to their country of origin or area of origin. They need to be detained and then put on planes or ships and returned within one week not 5 years. These returned migrants will get the word out to other that there is not point to wasting your money to migrate.
Aggressively prosecute human smugglers and withhold government to government aid for the countries that are the source or allowing the migration through their countries

The only good thing that came out of Brexit was Cameron got took down. I was unsure at the time whether it was a good thing or not but time has proven that nobody would be able to unravel what we had in the EU, preserving the best bits, of trade and travel, intact. In the US it looks just a small step away from civil war under ther dangerous influence of DT.There they have the benefit of Meidas Touch to unravel what he's he has been up to, for the American people. Is there such a group( hopefully honest) in the UK that can decipher what is really happening here? I clearly cannot trust either of the two sides (Labour or the Con merchants) to tell me the truth.
Don't forget the Tories have let in a lot of Hong Kong migrants.
