Camp Rock came out when I was in 8th grade and I was absolutely obsessed with that movie and Demi Lovato. I watched all of this show AND all of the British version because I wanted to support Demi so badly (I even watched some subtitled versions in other languages). Suffice to say, I was solidly the target demographic, and I jumped right onto the Sonny With a Chance train when that came out. I wrote fanfiction for Camp Rock and Sonny With a Chance and everything. Anyway, this was a really interesting trip down memory lane. I think from over a decade later, I can confidently say I just had a crush on Demi Lovato lol.

Listening to the intro song was such an uncanny experience since it was re-recorded in Polish for our version of the show. It isn’t as screamy in Polish and it’s like two kids, a boy and a girl singing it. The show always annoyed me. There was a weird thing where they were always sitting at like a window that would be connected to a kitchen where you put the plates when you’re done at the cafeteria. I guess they had set limitations but it just looked so strange.
Polish dub shows would piss me off when I’d visit my family in Poland. The voice overs were terrible
@@NilexRacing the thing is that show wasn’t dubbed, it was just the intro song that was. I also hate dubs but in every language, when I was in Spain I saw a movie with a dub and it was so funny to me. It’s a thing that in Poland only kids shows/movies and superhero movies are dubbed for some reason and in other places more genres are also dubbed so it was jarring.

In Canada we had PSAs meant to cause emotional damage or confuse us in-between our kids shows. We were taught about house hippos, limb loss, self confidence, work safety and more. All in between the normal toys and food commercials too.

The one that really stuck with me (other than the iconic house hippo) was the PSA about staying active, and it was just a guy being chased by several girls until he couldn't run anymore and they... low-key assault him? I had nightmares about that one. Or about losing a Pokemon card to the wind because I couldn't catch it.

This show was actually a remake of a Disney Italy show, and eventually had like 20 versions made throughout the world. It is still confusing how this became popular enough to have 20 different iterations.
It was probably pushed so hard because the format is incredibly efficient. The episodes are a third of the length of regular programming, the set is fixed and could be achieved even with a green screen, and only requires a skeleton crew.. Essentially it's a super low budget way to create and produce demographic specific niche content catered each region without having to invest in a lot of production and development. Just follow the format, hire a couple kid actors for base pay and an entire season can be shot in around a couple weeks max and at very little expense to the network.

I was looking for this comment. In my country the show is called Waktu Rehat, which have multiple meaning, it means recess in english but also can mean breaktime as in a commercial breaktime slots.

The British version of "As the Bell Rings" was very unrealistic, because it didn't have the teacher going "The Bell is for me, not you!" and making us late to the next class where the next Teacher would be very annoyed and keep us after the Bell for being late.

I think the fact that the ads were mostly focused on hyping up upcoming Disney movies and shows made the channel as a whole more enjoyable. I actually liked the ads on upcoming DVD releases as a kid 'cause I would get psyched about the bonus features on them, lol

The ads being focused on Disney was my turn off as a kid for some reason. I somehow came to the conclusion this made them selfish and avoided the channel for like a year or something.
This show haunted me for years and I couldn’t remember what it was. When you said toe jam it hit me. They had an episode with everyone asking why he was called toe jam and at the end it’s revealed his toe is deformed into a spoon shape and he eats jam with it and that image literally haunts me

I liked The Suite Life of Zack and Cody because it was nice to see a blonde woman as the smart one since I was a blonde kid seeing blonde characters portrayed as dumb or mean or both. I also loved that London was 'dumb' but only because she never had the opportunity to learn. She was sheltered and privileged. Moseby being a father figure for her was awesome.
I thought As The Bell Rings was the same as Saved By The Bell so whenever someone talked about the later I got really confused because they didn’t match up at all.

I never forgot this show honestly. It was in that nice Life With Derrick era. And I have memories of moving elementary schools and watching this and thinking how cool it would be to have friends. I also thought it was cool just to have a goofy little show and not a commercial, but it fucked up the timing of the channel sometimes.
Scott needs to do an episode about Casey and Derek from Life with Derek and how weird their sibling/romantic chemistry was!!

Great video, you and your friend's skit in this context and with the laugh track was hilarious too, unlike the Disney show it was ridiculous but not actually taking itself seriously!

The second season had some girl replace Demi, and honestly, I remember she was more annoying. I think she was very antagonistic towards Danny, and vis versa, creating a more “they hate each other, so they love each other” dynamic, and so, season 2 could go die in a fire
The origin story for Toejam’s name has forever stayed in my head any time i hear the term, which iirc, is because his toe is perfectly shaped like a spoon and he’s able to scoop out jam from a jar
Carlson Young (Tiffany) has actually grown to be a very good actress. She was on MTV’S SCREAM and was great. She was in GRIMM also great.

Before you solidified it my brain was going to Pretty Little Liars which is somewhere in the same ballpark anyways (and Carlson Young was in that too for 5 seconds). Carlson absolutely killed it in ScreamTV. Kinda sad that the initial plans for season 3 on were scrapped
The name Toe Jam actually fits perfectly because the "jam" part is like jamming out in your punk rock band but then the "toe" part is off-putting and disappointing, so you expect him to be cooler than most but it turns out he's just a normal dork like the rest of us. Toe Jam.

11:48 High school math teacher here. There is absolutely no mathematical formula taught in high school in which you multiply by pi squared. Pi squared is only found in very obscure volume formulas such as the volume of a torus (aka a doughnut shape).
In Italy it was called "quelli dell'intervallo" (those of the recess) and it was a main show, not just an inbetween one. Completely remade with italian actors I guess with the same script as the u.s. version. I miss it a lot and still watch an episode on youtube sometimes, made my childhood 100%. The intro was precisely identical to the uk one, same rythm and everything, just you know, in italian.

On the topic of brand loyalty, I would always turn on the Disney channel first and if something I didn’t like came on, I would switch to Nickelodeon. I would switch back and forth like that for hours. I was always really excited about it because until I was probably around 9 I had no access to those channels (only free kids channels and Jetix that had crappy shows) but then my grandma got a big cable package and I was finally able to watch all the cool shows. Probably also the reason why I watched those channels a bit longer than other kids.

Jetex was So good Disney bought it. Then after maybe half a year turned it into Disney XD or Toon Disney (can't remember which but that's what happened)
Whoa this is some wild parallel mind thinking, because I did a big commentary video on As the Bell Rings last year and our intros are almost exactly the same, Scott lol. Wild stuff. I go into the international versions a lot more in my video, because there were A TON of them. There's even one episode of the Brazilian As the Bell Rings with a Demi Lovato cameo in it and I was freaking out trying to figure out how Charlotte and Demi can both exist in the As the Bell Rings universe.

I’m glad you acknowledged the British version as As the Bell Rings sounded really familiar, but I had no recollection of Demi Lovato being in it or the theme tune. Showing the British version brought it all screaming back to me. I don’t even understand why there was a British version since Disney didn’t have any British shows (at least not that I can remember).
we also had a brasilian version before disney started doing brasilian shows, in fact, the cast of the brasilian version, kind of became 'the cast' of brasilian disney as they were basically all in the other... 2... shows brasilian disney had (also one guy went off to be the token brasilian in a show with people from all over latin america)
To be honest with you Chelsea wasn't really dumb she just caught on to things really slow because she occasionally had some good ideas.

The comments about the intro song hitting like a bus were almost word for word what I would have said if I wanted to make this video. Cue a second bus for the UK intro, especially that last "starts with a bell".
Turns out one of the quirky things about not living in a major media market is that the Disney subsidiaries out here tended to mix and match the shows (Middle East in my case). I don't think I can remember if they played them concurrently or if they played the UK one after they played the US one for a while. As far as I can remember, it just seemed like they were presented as two seasons of the same show.

As The Bell Rings was the sole inspiration for me to learn how to say the alphabet backwards because there was an episode where Tiffany was trying to do that. Nowadays I can do it really fast and people either are just like mildly interested like "oh, cool talent!" or before I even get the chance to do it "lol who would take time to learn that?" so basically this show taught me a lot.

When you said the intro "hit like a bus" I was like "yeah okay sure, scott" but, wow, it really does. I think I physically felt the collision. It unlocked memories of being jolted from my slumber.

And as the bell rings... I had no idea there were other versions! We had a version in Brazil with the cast of the Brazilian High school musical. I remember thinking this show made no sense because those class breaks weren't really a thing in Brazil at the time (and I think they still aren't widely common).

This show also aired here in the Philippines but for some reason Disney used the Indonesian/Malaysian version/dub with English subtitles. It was called Waktu Rehat and had their version of the UK theme song.
I remember the main setting being a similar hall but with a small table in the middle with a sculpture of a pair of twin towers with one of the main characters being a hall monitor or smthng whos a teachers pet who gets wrapped up in the other kids’ shenanigans.
At one point they did like a crossover episode with all the other versions of this show all over the world.

I was only allowed to watch Disney, and its actually BECAUSE of the lack of ads on there!! my mom took classes in advertisement shit in collage and didnt want us to watch commercials that would make us ask her for stuff and said ads brainwash kids basically i get it but also shes extra

Gee, thanks for unlocking this awful nightmare I had forgotten. 😂 Also glad someone else wasn't loyal to one of the Networks. I watched Nick, Disney, and CN religiously. I even watched Jetix, Toon Disney, Teen Nick, and every variation of the networks there were. (Hell, even throw PBS in there.) I... may have not had much of an exciting childhood 😂
I’m like Scott, I watched everything as a kid. Disney, Nick, CN, and even all the educational channels or whatever. Omfg that geek and hall monitor episodes were buried so deep I completely forgot about it until I saw it
It’s interesting cause the show was called “Saved By The Bell” over here in Australia, I always just assumed it was a sequel to the old Saved By The Bell from the 90’s

I completely forgot this existed until I heard the theme song and it unlocked some memories. I never really watched it much and was a little old when it was on anyways, but I remember the song in the very deep wrinkles of my brain. My favorite shows I remember watching as a kid where As Told by Ginger and Lizzie Macguire so I guess I was loyalty free as well 🤔 I think I actually watched CN the most though. This show looks like iy was shot completely in front of a green screen for some reason I can't explain.
I loved As The Bell Rings. It’s the first place I remember seeing Demi Lovato and I used to love them so much. I also loved Danny way too much (played by Tony Oller from MKTO btw).
I feel like we are now at the age where it is VERY fitting to get deodorant ads…I miss toy and cereal ads but this will sadly be more useful 😅😆
