- Here we take a look at a rather inexpensive way of listening to the air band using an HF Receiver. This down converter works between 118 MHz upto 138Mhz and can be purchased as a 100 Mhz or 110 Mhz down converter.

Interesting, but I can't see a use for it. It would have been helpful to have a comparison with the SDR receiver's own reception to see if it was lossy or actually helped amplify airband transmissions.
If the conversion quality is good , the results on a good HF radio would be very interesting..
I would be interested to see if there is any breakthrough of the signals that are not down converted.
I Guess if you would have an old School HF Receiver like the (Kenwood R5000) could give it a bit more use. Seeing that the VHF Upgrade Board is no longer available for Purchase.
That's a prime example, thanks for sharing.
Neat little device. It should work on the ATS 25 Max decoder II (just got one of those last week) and does not have Air Band. Think I’ll try this… thanks for the demo video!
Hi Mat. I think this is a well build and cheap device for airband enthousiasts. 73 Phil ON4VP
Wow, a nice neat device that's cheap and delivers exactly what it promised! 🎉 If only that wasn't so uncommon!
"Hi Zee"? Are you not a Brit? I would have thought that Brits would say "Hi Zed"! United Kingdom of America?? Cool device, thanks for the video.
Really bugs me as well as only the US, some parts of Canada & West Indies use ZEE, The rest of the world uses ZED which Americans would understand unless he regards them as all being a little thick!
He did acknowledge his mistake about 6 months ago in another video but doesn't seem to have learnt.
It may seem trivial as I like his videos, but it bugs me enough to stop my concentration on the subject matter.
@@slm60uk this one is a bit of an odd quirk - I would also say Hi-Zee in this one isolated case, but ordinarily would pronounce Z as Zed... guess we just associate a pronunciation with a particular thing and roll with it
That's quite a cool bit of kit.
Its neat, but for the price you can get a used scanner that will do the same freqs and scan.
I purchased an Radtel RT-470X for €28.50 to listen to the Air Band. Brilliant value for money and a very handy VHF/UHF transceiver.
I just want a small portable airband scanner that is good quality but doesn't cost hundreds of dollars. Most are beyond my budget.
A friend of mine got a cheap dongle that does not get airband, so he needed this. It ended up costing him about as much as my SDRPlay SDR.
Try Ita with they kiwisdr 2 😏
Thats a great idea! Cheers
Thanks, Matt 👍
Very neat build and works well but just how big is this niche market?
To use an old HF receiver and ad the neat feature of receiving airband.
Also as an amplifier (if it works ok).
