What to Plant in February for Zone 9 & 10 Gardeners
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- It's the start of a new month, and the days are slowly but surely getting longer! January was a very wet & chilly month for us, so I'm looking forward to February.
0:33 2 Things To Know
Hours of Sunlight
-We are still having short days. The average hours of daylight in January is only 10:14. That jumps up to 10:57 in February. That's still not much when you see that March is 11:55, April is 12:57, May is 13:49, and June is 14:15.
Temperature & Weather
-Limited sunlight and cooler temperatures mean that crops will continue to grow slowly. That's quickly changing, though.
Your February planting list is going to look VERY similar to January. One key difference is that I don't recommend starting brassicas, even from starters. That's because they're going to love the sunshine and grow too quickly, jumping to the flowering stage before the heads really develop.
No worries, though, because brassicas take up a good amount of space, and you're going to want to use that growing area in no time.
2:04 What To Plant
So with that out of the way, what SHOULD you be planting?
Root crops are a great option right now. This includes beets, carrots, and radishes. They'll soak up the sun and will be ready to harvest much faster than brassicas would be.
It's also a perfect time to keep growing all of the different kinds of greens like lettuce, kale, collards, and spinach. You should continue to succession plant them so you always have some ready to harvest.
Other veggies and herbs include peas, green onions, cilantro, fava beans, parsley, fennel, and a lot more!

4:22 My Favorites
There are dozens of things you can plant right now, but I want to share some of my favorites.

Any variety of green onions will grow quickly and super easily. Note that these are NOT bulbing onions.
sandiegoseedco...
Southern California is shaping up to have a super-bloom year with all of the rain in the last couple of months. Add some color to your yard with native wildflowers!
sandiegoseedco...
All of your herbs are going to love this weather, and lemon balm is a great option. Also check out lovage, cilantro, and whatever else you're going to use. If you're in a colder micro-climate, be sure to give herbs a little bit of extra protection.
sandiegoseedco...
All dark, leafy greens are going to thrive this time of year. If you started some back in November or December, those plants might be looking a little rough, trying to flower, or maybe even harvested entirely.
sandiegoseedco...
Don't forget about fava beans! Unlike most beans, it likes the cool weather. It's a nitrogen fixer and can be used for a great hummus.
sandiegoseedco...
Finally, carrots! We carry a dozen varieties, and I just love them. I'm always planting & harvesting carrots.
February is really your last chance to be able to grow a lot of these plants, so be sure to grow what you're going to eat or share!

As a Grower in Central Cal. (Zone 9B) I have found your site very helpful, Thank you for all the help in my Garden.
I’ve been waiting for this video, thank you! I just planted all those items in my seed trays, guessing from reading the backs of my seed packets. Thank you for reassuring me I was planting the correct seeds. I may have started a few tomatoes because the weather was so nice this weekend, fingers crossed I don’t regret that! I would love to get a calendar for this year.
5:10 This local advise is so valuable! Thanks, Brigette
love the channel. I need to order a catalog. Living in the high desert in So Cal.
I'm in zone 9 in Texas and most of the spinach that I planted out in December is bolting. Spinach is so hard to grow in the south. Thank goodness chard and kale grow pretty well though.
Ok so it isn’t just me. I live in zone 9B Florida. I have tried spinach twice last spring and fall and it never germinated. My Swiss chard showed out I have harvest like 6 times and I planted it back in October. My kale did better last spring vs fall.
I want to win. Love your content. Have a beautiful blessed day
Ooooh!!! I’d love to win the calendar! The idea of feeling certain about what to plant sounds AMAZING!!
New here! 9b Starting a new garden, just moved love all the great info
In zone 9b in Santa Rosa. I’m itching to start my summer seeds, but it’s not quite time, so I’ve been starting seeds for spring flowers instead. Can’t wait for the growing season to really take off. 😁

Just moved to zone 9a so I've been following along for the past few months!
I have scallions, red onions, red potatoes, carrots, kale and garlic coming up in my winter garden. I planted ginger but no sign of new growth yet. I also have red potatoes doing well, and I planted a cabbage core which sprouted in a glass of water and it's getting nice and bushy in the ground. I love a winter garden, and I would love to be a winner of some tasty fava beans to add yo my garden of yummies!!
Thank you for reminding me to plant more carrot seeds. Love watching your videos.
I love that I’m in the same zones. Makes it so easy! Can’t wait to start my garden.

Love to hear it!
Thank you for creating this video and your calendar. I love your seeds especially because we also live in zone 10, just about and hour from you. This time of year I have very little sun in my yard due to other homes and large trees, but knowing what to plant when is so helpful.
Thank you for all the valuable info you provide. It’s hard to find garden info for our region. 🌿🌵
I live on a Greek island, zone 10, so this is really useful. Thanks.
Would love to win a Calander. You are awesome and so helpful. thank you
The first year I grew broccoli was the middle of summer. I had no idea it was a cool season crop, but I had enough intuition to grow it mostly in the shade. I got beautiful large heads, but they had to be harvested very quickly. I’m in the California Bay Area so not the hottest summers. Last year put transplants in the bed in march, far too sunny, they bolted in no time.
Your video has been very helpful, I'm in New Zealand so our seasons are flipped, but this information has helped me refine my planting calendar, so thank you!
My Bok Choi already started bolting here in Palm Desert ~ harvested and replanting.
