I love the foreshadowing for “Nevermore”! “No one should ever go into my room”. What could’ve been seen as a one-off gag line turned into a major plot point!

If you're wondering why people hate TTG, it's this. This is the legacy that show took a dump on and was proud to do it.
On god. This is like some peak writing that we have yet to see again.
Not only did it take a crap on the show it did so after one of its most successful seasons and it's first movie. Remember one of the biggest tragedy of this show is it made no money due to it having no merchandising ready for how big it was. It was the first show taken out by what would later be know as woke garbage.
Then to add salt to the wound they made a teen titans cross over episode to make people remember that ttg is absolute dog shit

Love how not only does the first episode introduce the characters and their personalities it does so in a way that feels completely natural. It also gives you a great understanding of each character’s role in the team without needing to outright explain it. Heck it even makes you understand how robin despite being the only one without powers is the leader due to his strategic ability and the amount of trust the rest have in him being what unifies them.
You should bring up the fact that this animation style was SUPER unique back then. CAL Arts hadn't really taken off yet, and this version of Teen Titans was the first American-made show that had an Anime-esque art style. Before this, American shows rarely had elasticity in their character movements and expressions unless you went back to the Loony Toons. I can't overstate how huge of a shift this animation style was at the time.
It even led to shows like High Guardian Spice... so it wasn't all good news.
I like how the fight at the end also implies that the hive was never actually that strong. They had caught the titans off gaurd in a trap and split them up. A very useful tactic that was then turned around on them in the end. Catching the hive by surprise and splitting them up. Giving them a taste of their own medicine but also showing that the Titans are a superior force over all... AND SLADE KNEW THIS ALL FROM THE BEGINING.
Just echoing some other comments, the first canonical episode is “Divide & Conquer”. But “Final Exam” was the first episode aired. You can sort of tell by the art style (“FE” looks more polished whereas “D&C” has more of that “looks like a pilot” aesthetic).

That worked, because the writers of this show, deliveried such messages in a subtle and nuanced way. They didn’t force it down you’re throat, or put the message in you’re face thinking you were too stupid to figure it out, and force you to accept it. They knew how to write well, rather than some writers today, that think they’re, stale, shallow woke writing is Shakespearean poetry.

the whole “its rare to have a show feel episodic but also have a long running plot“ is why Kaguya-Sama is so great. Cute, Wholesome (90% of the time) and actual progression. Watching all of it feels like your personally getting to know the cast. Especially watching while airing.
God, I love Teen Titans. I was confused like you because I don’t remember this being the first episode either. Looking it up, I guess the actual first episode was Divide and Conquer, but story wise Final Exam makes more sense as an introduction point.
wasnt the "first episode" (the one introducing the teens not canonical production nor airing wise, maybe timeline wise) the two-part movie where the characters did get introduced? I remember It being like Robin had just left Batman to prove himself as a hero or something and starfire has escaped her captivity as a warslave or something, kisses robin because her species is able to learn any language via oral contact or something, the rest were just passing by and got caught up in the drama of the alien slavers hunting down starfire and wanting to take over earth or something. I feel like that episode(s) were part of a fever dream at this point cause NO ONE i know remembers it.

stil don't get me wrong character designs and interaction were fantastic but I feel they didn't do great job in action senes for example robin has too much plot armor while raven has fluctuating power (one time can phase trough wall at ease other times gets knocked on Flor or wall) hey have done dirty with beast boys (Gary's) fights to always be knocked out on someone (usually raven or Starfire) and usually always one animal at time (never fluctuates between animals to gapcolse doge or ecape)probably bc it was expensive to animate that only somewhat consistent character was stairfire

Writers still have talent, it’s the production and those big companies that trifle over what they’re doing… I watched a video on when teen titans got canceled and there’s no legit reason for the series to have ended…. Other than if the company wanted to push a different type of cartoon out. What wave comes after teen titans, been ten etc go off the air?

I really hope Nux reacts to a few more of these, particularly the episodes that feature Slade, as well as the episodes that focus on each of the Titans, Cyborg being an undercover student at Hive Academy, Beast Boy becoming a literal beast, Raven exploring her own mind as well as falling in love with a mummy guy from her book, Starfire’s “wedding” on Tamaran, and the Red X episodes.

Oh man actually fun and good written characters who really feel alive and relatable, wow can't believe how far tv shows in general have fallen.
Damn also forgot how powerfully menacing Ron Perlman's voice was for Slade. To me this version of Slade isn't even a Deathstroke variant, Slade from Teen Titans feels like his own unique character because that's just how commanding he was.
There's a reason why after 20 years, if the series came back to finish the show, I'd be there to watch it. It's simply a good show.
The thing I like about Raven in this show, is that, while Tara Strong brings an excellent performance as usual, and adds a hint of emotion in Raven’s monotone voice, the voice acting is delivered prefectly, to where Raven’s demeanor of what she says doesn’t come across how she feels so clearly. The audience can tell how she’s feeling feeling based on the emotive expressions by the anime inspired animators. But, what’s more important, are her actions. Actions speak louder than words, so something small like helping a teammate, or saying something that doesn’t come off as snide or annoyed, is her away of expressing herself, as much as she can. As her powers don’t grant her the luxury of being as open and in touch with her emotions as someone like Starfire. Her powers and circumstances of birth affected her nature, so she expresses her emotions in other ways.
The horror of hacking human beings is the centerstone of the _Ghost in the Shell_ anime. In a world where everyone is cybernetically enhanced, with _at least_ a brain implant, a moderately skilled blackhat can weaponize innocent people.
Mama Raven and Jinx let's go. Such a good first episode. Love that it shows the team dynamic in a way that encourages them to work together. So many different parts held together by Robin and his Stick.

Jinx was so CUTE! I didn't realize how cute she was when I first watched it but I rewatched teen titans not that long ago and when I was younger Star fire was my go to fictional crush lol.
I remember CN dropping a flash fighting game on their website as a promotion for this episode, and you could play as every Titan and HIVE member. It was so much fun!

But you got to make then flashier for later, or up their power

Teen Titans is one of those shows where there are different episode orders depending on where you look. A DVD of the first few that I have starts with the one where Cyborg and Robin get into an argument when their combo move doesn't work right, then Cyborg quits for a chunk of the episode.

What is it? Imagine if Raven was not born in Azerath, but in Asgard and grew up to be a Valkyrie in the Teen Titan style animation we all know and love. I remember watching this when I was younger, I wish it would be rerun again. I remember nux saying he would show his kids Teen titans, I did so with my younger cousins they said the show looked cool and they wanted to watch all the episodes, strangely it's a gate way drug to anime.
That episodic-yet-flowing arc narrative was something I tried to capture in the first big thing I was writing. I didn't have the skills to make it work at the time. I will be going back to it though.

I'm pretty sure that if you took a show from back then, which was canceled after one season (or less) and compare it to a show from today that is on its 3rd season, one of them would be better

yeah its so sad that they ended the series when they did when there was SO MUCH left. I was excite for a continuation or a reboot.... Go sorely lost my interest episode 1 and when i tried giving it another chance it peeved me off (twas the clown episode). I dont think a continuation is likely at this point due to several factors (amount of time that has passed, many writers/artists for the original show having moved on, the fact that CN has now been gobbled up by Warner Brothers, etc). I doubt anyone can beat this iteration of TT's mix of serious storytelling and down to earth comedy.
I love this show so much and your commentary had me smiling the whole video. Teen Titans does an amazing job at forcing me to love all the characters due to their unique and interesting personalities, abilities and designs :)
What stands out to me about that moment after Robin's captured is what Cyborg does compared to modern shows. He blames himself "I should have been there," "I let him sneak up on me," he's not blaming Raven and Beastboy "Why didn''t you watch out for him," How did they get to him when you were there,". His focus is entirely on what he did wrong and how he could have been better not other people's mistakes.

When all is said and done, this brought a smile to my face. It's just a good time to watch this show again. You said it best that this episode was a classic case of show not tell. And because of that it felt much more organic. It didn't feel bogged down in dialogue, nor did it try to be more mature or clever then it was being. Also, what is becoming rarer nowadays, is that all of the protagonists are likeable. Which is hard to do considering there are 5 of them, and they are all unique. I honestly just miss the early 2000's cartoon network. Recently, I did a search and found a compilation of all of the clips of the Cartoon Network city. The one where all of the CN characters interact and live their lives. Watching that just made me smile.
Kinda feels like the last 5 years or so of streaming content is poorly made fanfics compared to the old greats like this and Avatar. You got some gems like infinity train and stuff but so much shit. Both in streaming and Hollywood
Why did cyborg need robin to remind him his arm can work as a spy and start all this?
The original Teen Titans really deserves one more season to finish the story. It could happen. Many old shows have gotten continuations, or one more season, to finish up their stories after years of it having been cancelled. There are even comics after the show ended, that delved into plot lines like, if Robin and the Titans could trust Jinx to turn over a new leaf and be a hero for more than just love. After the whole Terra fiasco involving Slade, it made sense the Titans would be more careful when it came to recruiting ex-baddies. I haven’t read those comics yet, but they sound good for those looking for a original Teen Titans fix.

Turns out “divide and conquer” was made before this episode. Since clips from divide and conquer were used to make the Teen Titans intro and Slade’s motivation was different and less interesting.

Man, this brought me back to when this episode came out. This was way before smart TVs and you had to wait a week and watch it at a specific time or you were too late and had to watch the rerun at another time. Man, the joys of forgotten technology and better shows that made sense. I love Teen Titans. Teen Titans Go isn't my cup of tea, because it has no real plot and is a bunch of nonsense compared to the original Teen Titans anime. Can't believe it's been 20 years now. It's wild. I remember always waiting to see the next episode of Teen Titans or Pokemon. And I would go crazy. Man, good times.

No lie, Slade scared the hell out of me as a kid. Only cartoon villain I was actually afraid of. Writing and acting perfection!

Whats funny is that- I'm pretty sure before Teen Titans, Gizmo was just a tiny bald 40-something year old man in a jumpsuit. I'm glad they changed him to be a boy genius
