    I am a decorator and would always use a ladder in a stairwell except when the ceiling and walls were the same colour. I appreciate not everyone would be comfortable using a ladder in a high stairwell. The paint pad on an extension pole will work reasonably well - they leave a narrow margin where the wheels touch the wall, but that would be acceptable for many people. Don't let paint get on the wheels! However a brush on an extension pole is only good for touch ups and it is almost impossible to get a straight line with. There are much better tool holders for extension poles than the Wooster, which has too much flex for my liking. Use the paint pad option if you are not going to use a ladder is my advice.

    Just took on a job today with same circumstances. I almost passed but I need the work. I was planning on using 12 inch plank from stairs to ladder on ground, then put another ladder on plank to ceiling. I have a similar tool to hold brush but didn’t like it when cutting in above 20 ft. It’s about holding a pole steady then. My plank plan is too risky though. I’m just packing my van with every option. Thanks for the advice!!

    I agree although the lock jaw is a great tool to paint in difficult hard to reach areas, it’s also very difficult to use and try and position, thankfully I only had a small area to do and that was enough

    To control the Wooster clip it takes alot of upper body strength to keep it steady. Or take breaks in between passes

    I can remember my old dad’s solution. Luckily the window on the outer wall on the stairs had a ledge that was roughly the same height as a horizontal section of stair rail on the opposite side so he just placed an old wooden door across the stairs, one end balanced on the i Dow ledge and the other on the stair rail. It created a handy platform that he would climb on. It used to scare me to death as a kid.

    If you can't do a straight line on the side of a door frame..can't imagine those lines using an extension 😂😂✌

    I had terrible results with that adapter. My stairwell is 18 ft. to the ceiling and impossible to get a ladder in the space. I went to HD and bought a quality paint pole (you need one that's stiff and not flexible).
    In fact, I went exactly the opposite way you did and used a pad and was done in short order. Once I cut-in the ceiling I used a roller to finish up the lower walls.
    I liked the pad so much I bought a couple extra on EBAY (Mr. Long Arm 0470 Trim Smart Paint Edger (2-Pack) New).
    I threw that Wooster adapter in the trash. It was virtually uncontrollable at that height. With the pad I could just slide it up into place and glide along.
    I'm not sure what you're talking about involving 'splatter' from a paint pad. They don't splatter unless you're doing something wrong.

    • @Drewallin
      @Drewallin 7 років тому

      did you use the pad with the pivot attached to an adapter? i am having problems with that wooster tool too, it is useless. i have a similar award ceiling situation over stairs so would need scaffolding which i cant do. i tried using a sash brush taped to edge of a pole with duct tape. that didnt work too well.

    • @btomas225
      @btomas225 7 років тому +1

      Lil M- No, don't use the pad with the articulating pivot. It's too hard to control. Order a couple of the pads I recommend on Ebay. They're stiff enough to hug the ceiling and spread the paint predictably.

    OK, I had four stairwells to paint and on the top floor where you get that big expanse of wall I was left with about 3 metres of cut in's to do that were awkward to get to, normally I use a product called a stairmate which allows a ladder to go up were I need to go but somewhere in the van a part of it has gone missing, not the sort of thing you can buy in your local store so I was up against it. In desperation I bought one of these brush holders and I have to say it worked really well, I was amazed. But I was only reaching across from the landing about 1.2 metres away and the cut in was just over head height. (Imagine painting in an average room and doing your cut in standing about 1.2 metres back from the wall) I can't see how you would get a good line if you were using it on a high ceiling where you cannot see the top of the brush, where I used it I could see the top of the brush and I achieved a good line, as good as the rest of the job.
    So never say never, this £7.00 item got me out of a spot and sits in the van.

      Thanks for the demonstration, I have been looking at all kinds of tools for faster cutting in. But I keep coming back to the same conclusion. All these tools seem very clunky to use and I feel would make the job take longer. The only other route I have found that looks like it would go faster, is getting a set of stilts. I work at an apartment complex and we have 9 and 12 foot ceilings. So a lot of my time is spent running up and down a ladder doing 3 foot of the ceiling at a time before needing to move the ladder. I am also considering using the roller covers for the FasTrim roller. The roller looks too gimmicky for me, but they might be on to something with the covers. I am looking for something with the speed of a roller, but has something built onto it for protecting the edge, that way I don't have to hold a taping knife as a blocker.

    The Shurline edger sucks! The best one I have had good results with is the one by Mr. Long Arm. Wheels are bigger and roll good. Pad has foam behind flock and holds a lot of paint. You can create a wheel guard with a a piece of folded acetate that can be slipped in while loading to keep wheels clean. I did a stairwell with it and it came out just as good and in fact better than a brush with NO ladder. Remember to back wipe with it after your cut as it holds a lot of paint and can run. I used a brush holder just to get into top corners.

    Good little gadget for painting high ceilings by staircases to cut in when your not painting the ceiling and you dont want to buy expensive long ladders for a small area. With two different colours the cutting in will show if it's not very neat so it would take practice I guess. Cheers

    That tool is great in a pinch to maybe touch up a spot without having to use a ladder - and even then you've got to be super careful. I would NEVER EVER EVER cut in with it. And to solve your fear of dying in your stairwell, buy a PiViT Ladder tool.

  • @30smsuperstrat
    @30smsuperstrat 4 роки тому

    I've used the pads they're garbage. Not enough nap to get enough paint on texture without overloading the pad with paint. The rollers eventually get paint on them and they get paint on the other edge. Best option is scaffolding or hiring a painter. If not you'll have amateur looking results. Even if you think they're OK, the first real-estate agent you hire will definitely recommend repainting.

    • @LEARNINGCHORDS
      @LEARNINGCHORDS  4 роки тому +1

      not really.. these days most people buy and either tear down and rebuild, or they paint it before moving in... no agent will tell you to repaint. if you want a house in California and complain about a ceiling line paint job, someone else will over bid you and take it... no one even looks up at a ceiling paint job. In every place I looked at when I bought a few times I NEVER walked around looking at paint trim at the ceiling EVER...

    • @LEARNINGCHORDS

      while you are correct-- most people do not want to set up a ladder over a spiral stairway where there is no place for safety. They want to save money and get it done. I can assure you that NO ONE I know walks into a room and looks up at the ceiling and top of the wall. They eye doesn't do that- so while it won't look great-- it will be fine
