Rick this may be the most honest music industry video you have made.
Very few people who "work" in the music industry have any of their songs heard by anyone.

Go back to the Brill Building folks. Just sat in offices all day writing jingles. Most of them never got recorded. The very select few would then get chosen by management and a singer would be selected to record it.

If you write your own songs and there 15, 25 or 100 people that really dig it and brings a smile (at the moment) that's for me already a bless . Okay that might sound a bit mushy :-)

Back in the day, we saved our money, went into a studio that had maybe 16 tracks, (because we were poor) recorded a bunch of songs and then saved some more money to stamp out a record (or a CD). We tried to sell them at shows. But we mostly gave them away to friends. They were never listened to more than once at most. I have hundreds of such CDs in boxes in my cellar. But things are so much better now! We record in our own home studios with 48 or more tracks, and release to the entire world on Spotify...where nobody ever finds the songs or hears them. So what is old is new...it's the same old thing--you better make music for YOU because pretty much nobody will ever hear it but you.

I remember when Protools began to take over not long after ADAT's and DA88's were the 'big thing' (and rather short lived). A friend of mine that owned a small studio was already lamenting how the Roland digital recording workstations were cutting into his demo business, and he predicted that Protools would probably close nearly all of the smaller studios as more musicians/bands would build home studios. He also noted how the more successful local bands were the ones that had the budgets to go into the studio to begin with, and that it was kind of a 'filtering' process when it came to music 'quality'... now, it's pretty much a saturated 'free for all' with how the business has transitioned.

My Dad sent me this video, and while I'm in a different world, the same applies to writing books, and even more broadly, all human creations. We are destined for dust, as is our work, but while we're here, we get the chance to create something meaningful, even if it's only seen by those closest to us. The great joy of life is the act of creating.

I didn’t release my first album until early 2021 and I’m 67. It took me 13 long months to produce the 10 tracks and I also mixed and mastered the whole thing. To this day I can listen to the album and sincerely wouldn’t change a thing on it. It is my masterpiece. Will anyone other than my family, friends and my modest fan base ever hear it? No. But you know what? I produced a damned good album. I achieved something most people never will, and I’m happy with that.

Unpopular opinion: the modern allure of being a “professional musician” has become so prolific that we forget that the point of songwriting for centuries was to make music for family and friends. Songs don’t have to top charts and make millions in order to be valuable.

    • @cuerampart2886

Absolutely agree.. And it all adds to ourselves and who we are and leave the earth with.. Our ancestors who will know us will understand our music and appreciate it.. That’s a big thing yet right now it seems so small but we create music to make others who hear it happier so even just a small amount makes me fulfilled in my life..

THANK YOU, Dusty Buffalo, for that reminder! I'm middle aged now, but as a young guy wanted to write songs for a living. I realized I was terrible, not knowing how to do stuff that was popular at the time and then I quit for a long, long time. I got back into it recently...this time only for myself and for my family. Okay MAINLY for myself...a hobby, I guess, so that I could perform some of them as a creative outlet. I was just getting to the point of hanging it up again, thinking it's pointless because no one would ever hear the stuff, and then I've come to your "Unpopular opinion". I don't know you, but I'm grateful to you for expressing your thought on the matter.

The most heartwarming thing about this video is the love you feel that Rick has for all these artists with their unheard songs. He is in not even remotely condescending, he doesn’t blame them, not even those who didn‘t even try to publish their songs, he is just full of love for all of them. For the passion and energy and money and everything they put into these songs. I had tears in my eyes after watching this. When radio arrived, and with the WPA, a lot of places in the mountains got electricity, and people could listen to singers and fiddlers etc. from Nashville and New York. It killed a lot of music. Because people used to love to sit on their porch and sing and fiddle. Now they realized their singing was unfortunate, and Uncle's fiddling was really goofy, compared to the pros.
The other problem was the money. While the radio tended to promote the better musicians, it also promoted itself and the pressure of "more, more money". So they no longer focused on what sounded good, but more on "what will people buy", and when they do that they are blocked from being able to hear what sounds good. About all they can do is try to figure out what was it that sold so many records on the last hit, and repeat that. You see that with movie sequels too.
BTW this demo track doesn't sound that good to me. I can hear the harmonies and they are beautiful but to me there's too much show biz in it. It's like going on a road trip with the 8-track playing stuff like this, and after about 6 hours you shut it off and the silence is so nice and you say "Yikes that was awful". Sorry if this ruffles feathers but I thought y'all wanted some feedback.

Yes, adding more instruments or processing would have detracted. There is an element of their harmony though in a few places that almost grated (although I think that's a little harsh), and, I would have worked some way to change tempo and create a mysterious break with the "I got out alive". Those things tend to stick out and are more memorable if you can evoke a frisson in the listener. The opportunity was right there, I was waiting for it and it didn't happen.

This video gives credence to all those who committed their lives to creating because it was their path. Knowing that many have not made the great, though they deserved it is a bitter sweet reality of life. It's truly more about relishing the journey than achieving fame and wealth.

Racing thoughts, overthinking things, then I pick up a guitar and my mind goes quiet. If a song happens the words are often a perspective I never realised existed. Yeah, I was in a progrock band in the 80's. We were all musicians, artists, interested in philosophy, becoming better humans. We formed a band to create something that was unique and from the heart. I got to live a dream: unrestrained creativity, no musical restrictions. People either hated or loved us. Many other musicians loved us because we were doing what they really wanted to do.
The sacrifices we made, working at full-time jobs, incalculable hours improvising, writing, rehearsing, promoting, marketing. Four hours worth of original music, four years of my life represented by a badly mixed cassette, old promotional materials, a vinyl EP single that came out of the pressing at the wrong speed, photographs and memories is all that's left.
      No regrets.

A singer in a band I was in became a good friend. We recorded some of his music on my little Pro Tools set up (circa 2012). I remember he had a hole in his acoustic guitar (on the wrong side). He never thought the songs were good enough to release an album. They were fantastic and the pain he had lived transferred into his raspy voice and deep lyrics. He eventually took his life. I am so glad I made him record some of his music because his family, especially his Dad, listen to his music every day now. He also inspired me to write more and now I release my music to my 20 monthly listeners on Spotify. Life is too short not to share your creations. Not everything needs to be about money.

That song, artists just like that, and people like you, are exactly what the music world needs! That song is magnificent. No other instruments or production needed, just real voices and real instruments. I have written hundreds of songs too, none of which have gone beyond familynand friends, and here I am working two jobs, one of which is teaching guitar, when my heart is in tune with those two singers who you just played. I'm your age and don't expect to "make it" in music, but I still pick up my guitar every day to play and sometimes write--because it's in my soul. That's how God made me. Keep up the good work, Rick. “Down by the River” needs to be produced for mainstream music now. Such a great song going unnoticed is a crime. Put it out there Rick, you owe it to all involved in the making of this song and to the listening public who are currently fed the same old four-chord, digitally altered songs which have no soul. I think about this whenever we see a band playing in a bar. Maybe tonight they're "just a local cover band" but they still poured countless hours of effort into learning to play, learning to play together as a group... and maybe even writing songs that nobody gets to hear because the bar crowd wants to hear "Don't Stop Believing" for the 4,096th time.
Which is why I always clap, toss something in the tip jar, buy a couple of drinks, and tell the bar manager that I'm there because of the band.

So I hate when I hear other musicians say a band “sucks” , maybe they are not what you are into but I’m sure they put in a lot of effort to get on stage.

This is why I get outraged when I see a*&les say a band that has worked all their lives in bars or anywhere they can get a gig that somehow made a name for themselves and go on to commercial success. The first thing many of their fans say is, "They sold out!" These so-called fans only want these bands to toil in obscurity, making songs a few hundreds get to hear.

It's quite something that little gesture means so much to musicians to get credit in a video about someone else. All artists deserve recognition for their work entertaining us, it's not only the right thing to do, it also might open opportunities you might never have anticipated (My first time in New Orleans, I got to hang out w/ Jazz musicians after a show until 3 am because of a video I'd made years earlier that highlighted them)

Rick Beato is nearly my age and I love his videos for the same reasons. For example when he analysed drumming details of a song that came out some 40 years ago and he spoke so fascinated about these and it was the same way as I heard and felt about these details when I was a young drummer. In all years since then I never had a musician to share these specific details. Can you imagine how it feels, to hear this man talking, that I don't know, that I likely never will meet, living thausends of kilometers away, but touching me with exact the same musical perception that I had in my youth? In this moment it feels like he is the closest musician friend that I can imagine.

I had an eye-opening experience a few months ago, first visit to Nashville, we stopped in The Row (bar/restaurant with live music.) I stood next to the bar, stunned, listening to the first music set -- she was playing guitar and singing covers of songs better than I've ever heard in a live performance... and she was working for tips. The second act -- she was on The Voice and lasted a few rounds, incredible singer and guitar player.... at a mostly empty bar, singing for tips. Third performer -- went further on The Voice, made my eyes tear up her voice was so beautiful, and nailed every damn note in a Whitney Houston... singing for tips.
I'm not involved in the music industry at all, except as a consumer. But this was an incredibly eye-opening experience for me. That happens in bars all over the world every night of the week. I'd have bought tickets to hear any one of them in concert for an hour or two, but here they were struggling musicians trying to get discovered or find some magic, probably working a crappy day job so they could afford to go on stage a few nights a week? It was an amazing experience, so very humbling and it filled me with admiration for true artists who will do anything to make the music they love. So we tried to be very generous and show our gratitude for how they impacted our lives that night. Bless all of you who keep working and trying and performing. You make a difference for the rest of us who listen and admire you.

There is such a big difference between being an "artist" and being an "entertainer". An artist is the creator of art, something unique. An entertainer, on the other hand craves the attention of an audience and will do whatever they can to capture and hold the interest of an audience. In a pure sense, creating art is it's own reward. I took me most of my life as a professional musician to realize that the most important thing about making a record - vinyl, tape, CD, whatever format - was making myself happy. If you base your success on how many albums you sold - or, in my case as one of 10 million unknown artists around the world - how many people have actually listened to your work, you will be miserable. My first commercial release on a major label in 1978 was a complete flop. I ended up back in the bars where I've since been for 50 years. I've since made 3 more albums and given most of them away. I made my last CD for ME - I didn't give two titanium turds what anybody thought of it or cared who actually listened to it. I made it for the sheer joy of creating art which is as important to me as breathing.

In other words, is there value in the creation of any art, to more than just the artist? I think most can agree that there is value to art shared, performed and seen; but FIRST there is value to the creator/artist. Rick, I’ve been following you for a good while. I have to say though, this post may be the one that resonated with me most. After coming off a stellar band that I was with for 20 years, I’ve entered probably the most creative phase of my life from a writing standpoint. I struggle with questions like “WHY am I doing this?“ “WHAT do I do with this?” “Is this worth anything if no one ever hears it?“ “Is art really art, if there’s no audience?” Though I would be head over heels thrilled for somebody, anybody to hear my current creative output I’ve kind of resigned myself to the fact that like some Buddhist monk doing meticulous grain by grain sand art over the course of months and then dumping the final product in the river, The “beauty is in the doing“. You have to simply appreciate the conscious state of those creative moments, the joy it brings you, the calm and release it brings you and in the best case scenario, the way it man enrich the life of those you produce the music with.

Very insightful Rick. I remember a childhood friend and I started playing music when we were 9, 10 years old, playing in front of school class, little jigs etc but it never really went anywhere. Hard to keep young guy's together on the same track, seeing the same vision. Then comes girls, hot rods and life in general but my friend never quit chasing that dream until the day he died of cancer at 64. We pursue our passions sometimes to our own demise, sometimes to great achievements never knowing where it will take us but the memories and people you meet along the way Can Be a great thing in it's self if we remember to be kind, humble and enjoy the journey...I still play guitar today, for myself and the memories, the LOVE of MUSIC!

Maybe a bit more subtle percussion other then that the track is complete and beautiful.

Rick, could YOU release an album of these songs that are all 'Digital Dust'? May call it Digital Dust Volume 1? Would love to hear it as like many others have loved hearing 'Down by the Riverside'. I'd buy the 1st copy, even at a premium price. Anyway, great share Rick. 👌🏾

It's not his work....could be dicey. This one he was involved in authoring, the rest are not his. He was producing.

You know, Rick, what you said about "all those hours" that went into developing work that went nowhere really resonated with me. I'm a screenwriter (MacGregor is a pseudonym) who spent his life writing scripts on spec. Everything I wrote won an award of some sort (except for my first feature script which was optioned but never made) and my last script had two academy award winning directors (each of whom had also won academy awards for screenwriting) wanting to direct. Couldn't get the money. I worked my whole life in the camera department just so I could work at the heart of the set -near actors snd directors - so I could be close to where the stories are being told believing it would make me an even better writer even though the highly technical world of motion picture cameras was alien to my sensibilities. Nevertheless, I knuckled down and learned what I need to know and adapted to be good at something I had no native talent for starting out. Working 16 hour days on set and then, when the projects were done, I'd go away for a couple of months into isolation to work on my own spec scripts for 16 hour days until the money ran out and then back to set to make more money .Thirty years of it, Rick. My poor wife. Now I've set those dreams aside and I'm putting my creative energy into music, purely for pleasure, while my my projects, too, collect 'digital dust'. I think artists who persevere in the face of overwhelming odds, trying to make their way in captured art forms, is nothing short of heroic in nature and I applaud them all.

My Father in Law said a similar thing about television production when l asked him about a reel of film he had in the back seat of his car. It looked like one of the reels they had in movie theaters two hour shows. He told me it had about a minute and a half of usable material that would end up ever airing on the show he was working on. He also said there were several hours involved in making it.

Wow!!!!! I don't know whether to feel sad or not. I am a musician, I was on the doorstep of achieving my dreams and life came and punched me in the face. I struggled for years with CPTSD, just to function in society on how I lost my dream. I still dont know how to cope, as all I wanted to do my whole life was be a musician. i still play music, and its pretty good i might say, unfortunately i cant look at my continuing attempts as heroic, just as...what else would i do with my life?

Hey Rick - First. that song was better than anything "new" I've heard in the the last 5 years. Second; have you ever thought of maybe packaging "lost" songs like that in a two or three CD or downloadable set? Select the best of the best that "stand out"; I for one will be a grateful to have that extension of your professionalism and career to enjoy. Fantastic sharing - thank you.

That absolutely is a great song, Rick! JT - There are others but you won't hear them on the radio. Look up Rodney Crowell's Triage album for something recent that's damn good :-) One of the songs even has a trombone solo with wah-wah mute. 🙂

Needs to be a platform to play these unknown bands. Like back in the 70s and 80s turning on the radio we didn’t know these bands until we actually heard them. Then we went to the record stores to find the artist albums we liked. I miss those days.
