Dude, I just wanted to say thank you for making this video. I took my rodeo to Goodyear and another transmission shop after it started slipping, both said the clutch was gonna going out. After watching this video I took matters into my own hands and checked it out myself, turns out there was almost no fluid in the transmission! It now works flawless after filling it up.
Had the same problem didn't want to take it to a shop because the ones around me are notorious for scamming people. Took it to a family friend with a lift got under it and it was empty.. add fluid and bam just like new.
THANK YOU...for this. I am just now having an issue with a transmission code(p0753) and on a hunch I am going to check the fluid to see if its low or dirty. I saw on a website ,with pics,on this procedure, however ,He did not mention having the car running or sitting overnight. It wasn't until I saw on a forum to keep It running while checking the fluid level. Then I found your videoTHANKS!
Wow!!! Thanks so much for your video, I have an 1996 Acura SLX that I am rebuilding and it has a sealed transmission too, now I know how to do it myself, thanks again
Gee thanks! i searched for that trans stick all evening ! You should be an instructor full time ,clear and to the point all in less than a coffee break
You can also use an infrared thermometer to measure transmission pan temperature. They run from cheap at Harbor Freight($39 on sale) to several hundred dollars. The more you pay, the more accurate they get.
You are very welcome, and yes, you have to keep the vehicle running during this procedure. You have to be fairly quick, however, the fluid temperature needs to be in the 90-130F range so it will take it a little while to get hot.
I'm not quite familiar with a 2004 3.5L but if it has a dipstick in the automatic transmission you should add the fluid through it. When you're buying your fluid at an auto parts store, ask them to look up the type of the fluid (probably Dexron/Mercon) and how many quarts it would take to drain and refill it (I know Autozone will tell you that). Fill it about a quart short of what they tell you and then add a little at a time so you don't overfill it. Then start it up and add as needed.
I would say if you don't feel comfortable doing it, don't do it, however, I have changed the fluid (and also the transmission filter and the pan gasket) in mine. When I refilled it, I used the same technique to fill it and check the level. You are not going to get all of the fluid out of it this way, you'll only drain and refill five or six quarts, if that. If you want to pay a mechanic to "powerpurge" your fluid, you can do that too..
To Marco Tenorio: Sorry, I thought I replied to your question but I don't see it on here. I have never done a full transmission flush, I just drained and refilled it. That took 4-5 quarts (can't remember exactly) and the fluid was pretty clean afterwards so I think that was sufficient. And I agree with Mark Arguelles' comment above, I'm pretty cautious about those flushes.
Gotta love youtube..he he ..I owned a Isuzu Rodeo 2002 also. First time, I bought it I was going crazy looking to check the transmission fluid then, found out it didn't have a stick..lol. Good to know about how to check it out. I won't do it but if I have to do it. I don't think I will do it myself but, I'll be watching the mechanic that do the job..Mostly because I'm a female and most try to make us look stupid. What ever happened to the good old cars?. I used to be able to do tune up in my cars these days I swear there's a conspiracy going on..LOL
Your videos on Isuzu Rodeo are so helpful. Thanks a lot. One quick question, do you need to keep the truck running while doing this operation? I'm worried of the pan getting too hot?
It is supposed to have a drain plug on the bottom and a fill plug above it just as shown if your vehicle is a 2002 Rodeo V6 with automatic transmission. I am not familiar with any other types of transmissions on these cars.
Hi There. I have a 2002 auto transmission Isuzu Wizard. The wagon had a full service 3 months ago and two weeks ago noticed the first gear slipping when driving uphill. The mechanic advised the transmission oil was low. The mechanic gave the transmission a flush without my knowledge as I thought he would look for the leak. Anyway the flush the transmission leaked like a sieve. I took the wagon back to the mechanic and he replaced the transmission seals. A day later the transmission is still leaving pools of transmission oil over my drive. Apart from realising the mechanic is hopeless at identifying the fault I have decided to try a transmission stop leak fluid. Can you recommend one? Lucas Transmission Fix appears to be as good as any other product but I'm only looking on the internet for reviews. Thanks in advance for your advise. - Regards. Dave - NZ
Dave C don’t do transmission flushes. Most budget shops use machines to do this that run off of air pressure. Back when I was a wrench turner I saw those machines blow out the seals on a half dozen transmissions because the techs weren’t properly trained. There’s no need for using a machine, you can flush it by multiple drain and fills. That’s the safest bet for a layman.
@@ericdube836 I forgot what my uncle said the issue was but I know it had something to do with the transmission. I bought it that year with 140k miles and only had it for a few months. It had the tick but I was driving it fine. The mechanic didn't examine it on a lift or anything but told me after a quick 2 minute look I should replace the engine (I wasn't trying to because I was moving to NC LOL). It ended up breaking down on me literally 2 days before I moved and I ended up having it towed and left it in Florida. He ended up with it and got it running for a bit tho.
in the mornings I put my car in drive or reverse the car does not move. 2 minutes it will go good all day just in the morning it plays up.? what would that be low transmission oil
Hey whats up man, got a suggestion i was wondering if you can put a video of replacing the oil pan gasket both upper and bottom gaskets?? Nice truck i got a 2001 honda passport very good engines and nice trucks over all
Hi I have a truck isuzu Rodeo 2000 and I don´t know how to size the transmission fluid of the truck, and i have a little leakage by the cover. The cuestion I have for you is: Is it normal to dump transmission fluid when there is a rise in temperature?
I'm not quite sure what you are referring to as "dump." There should be no leakage with a properly working transmission. But if you are asking about checking the fluid level, if you have the fill plug unscrewed, with the engine running, then yes, with the rise of temperature the fluid you are adding will start running out. The check needs to be done when the engine is running and the fluid is at normal operating temperature--just warm--and not cold and not too hot.
Is your transmission considered "sealed"? I have been trying to figure out how to change my tranny fluid on my Rodeo and my transmission is sealed. Thanks for the video!
I have a question about my 2004 3.5L isuzu rodeo. I am planning to flush n replace my transmission fluid on my own and wondering what is the recommended fluid for my rodeo and how much by quarts do i need to put on the pan? Also, mine has a dipstick so should i put in the fluid through the dipstick using a long funnel???
i have isuzu axiom 2002 3.5 and have byg problem automatic transmission, when i go off a distant is heated and pouring, pleasetell me if you know what do with this problem? thanqs
So my 2004 isuzu rodeo has a transmission dipstick to check fluid level as well as a drain plug. Would it be wrong to fill the transmission to the right amount through the dipstick tube insted of going underneath to pump it.
I'm not familiar with that model with a dipstick, but if it does have one, you should be able to add fluid through the tube. I would add a little at a time, and give it some time after each portion to get a correct reading. Hope this helps.
@William Perri drained the pan changed the filter drained the lines and cooler and ran transmission flush in it to clear it as best I could. Filled it back up shifted all gears checked again and topped off.
i have same car and i want to change fluid in it,should i follow same procedure?,guy at auto zone told me it was a sealed trans.and i would have to take it to a macanic and it would need 12 to 15 qts of fluid, have you ever change all the fluid in yours?
hey the check trans light came on none of the gears are slipping and it drives perfect other than it being a low fluid level what else would be the issue? because of fluid level is fine has no problems it goes into gear smooth and drives perfectly fine so is there a sensor or solenoid or something that can trigger the light?
Yes, I am pretty sure your 2001 Trooper has a sealed transmission as well, so there should be no dipstick but rather a drain plug and a fill plug--similar to those shown in this video. Thanks.
No, if you unscrew the fill plug with the engine stopped, a lot of your transmission fluid will simply drain. While running, it's circulating through the transmission, and it's designed to show an accurate reading during that time and when it's between 90 and 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
Hi Isaac, if you unscrewed the drain plug on the transmission, then screw it back in and open the fill plug above (See video). Fill the transmission with the engine off. When the fluid starts running out of the fill hole, start the engine and wait for the transmission to warm up to where it is barely warm to the touch. Then start adding fluid through the fill hole, with the engine running, until it starts to flow out of the fill hole. Refer to the video for this last portion.
well the trasmission oil in the trasmission is pretty old so I'm going to probably get rid of all the oil and change the transmission oil then add transmission oil
Yeah I would go with new fluid and it'll pretty much be a drain and refill transmission fluid change. You won't change all of the fluid that way because a good part of it is trapped inside but it's definitely better than nothing.
sorry I do not speak English but use translator, if the car needs oil as it is and if it gives out there , thank you very much for your information and the more or less must carry
Hi, It seems the translator restructured your question while interpreting it so it doesn't make much sense. If you're asking what to do if the transmission needs more oil, then follow the steps in the video. Get it to the right temperature, and unscrew the fill cap, filling it until it starts running out. Hope this helps.
+Wilfredo Erazo If you are asking how many liters of fluid the transmission holds, that information depends on your year/make/model/transmission type, and should be in your owner's manual. You won't be able to drain and refill the whole thing anyway, you can only replace what is going to drain when you take out the drain plug. And then refill it per instructions in the video. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching the video.
hey i have a question why does my 2002 isuzu axiom transmission lights on and than it kinda goes off and on and it sounds like its going to die because it pulls. they are saying that it could be an electric thing. can anybody help me please.
northwestern2002 I found it... Do i have to start the engine while im pouring the the transmission fluid or i have to warm it up and turn it off? Thanks!
Do you mean you found the transmission or the dipstick for it? If the dipstick, you should check you service manual as you might have to check/add fluid with engine running or engine off, I am not sure how yours would be. If you mean you found the transmission and it's the type that does not have a dipstick, then please follow the instructions in my video. Thanks.
I have a 2000 isuzu lse and everytime I come to a complete stop I have to press the winter drive botton to make the car move again can anyone tell me how to fix it or with the problem is.
Shantella Brown Using winter mode, forces the transmission to start in third gear for smoother take off and acceleration. Try putting the shift lever in L to force it into 1st gear (with winter mode off)...Failing that, try 2nd gear. It sounds like a possible range sensor issue or low fluid pressure. There's a ton of different possibilities though. Best to take it to a transmission shop. I've got a trooper with an auto transmission, I know the woes of these trucks. But I can give you some hope in that, often it's not a major mechanical issue, but rather a small easy to fix glitch. You should also check your Transmission fluid level. There's two 19mm plugs in the tranny pan, one for draining and one for filling/checking.... They're a P.I.T.A to fill and check, but basically, while the truck is cold. Go underneath and find the plugs, then fire it up, move the shifter into every spot for a couple seconds each, then let it run for 3 minutes. The while it's running and in Park, pull the fill/check plug (the one mounted about 3 inches higher) and if any drains out let it drain till it stops because it was overfilled... If NONE drains out, then add more through the same hole until it starts leaking out of that hole. You will need a little hand pump to do it, because you are actually pushing the fluid up into the hole (very lame design) DON'T SHUT OFF THE TRUCK UNTIL YOU HAVE FILLED/ALLOWED TO LEAK OUT AND REPLACED THE FILL PLUG!!!!....Hope this helps!. PS a replaced TPS is a must to help these trucks shift at the right times too, and a tps is cheap. (throttle position sensor)

There could be several components that could trigger that, I would say have it diagnosed.

where did you get the syringe at?
I believe it was at Walmart, at the automotive section. Although I think they sell them at other stores, maybe even in kitchen sections and such.
i have a 2000 Isuzu trooper and I had a trans line come off while I was driving it, it pumped out allot of fluid, could the trans be empty?
It may not be empty but I would definitely fill it up before driving it, otherwise you might ruin the transmission.
thank you, I'll do that.
Where can i get those syringes?
I see you did this with the car running?
Can it be done with engine stopped?
No, if you unscrew the fill plug with the engine stopped, a lot of your transmission fluid will simply drain. While running, it's circulating through the transmission, and it's designed to show an accurate reading during that time and when it's between 90 and 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
Thank God my 2004 3.5 has a stick lol
hey I was trying to change much engine oil and opened the transmission oil by accident and drained all of it what should I do?
Hi Isaac, if you unscrewed the drain plug on the transmission, then
screw it back in and open the fill plug above (See video). Fill the
transmission with the engine off. When the fluid starts running out of
the fill hole, start the engine and wait for the transmission to warm up
to where it is barely warm to the touch. Then start adding fluid
through the fill hole, with the engine running, until it starts to flow
out of the fill hole. Refer to the video for this last portion.
can my old oil be mixed with my new trasmission oil
If it was not too old and you were able to catch it all in a clean container, then yes. However, if it was me, I would use new fluid.
well the trasmission oil in the trasmission is pretty old so I'm going to probably get rid of all the oil and change the transmission oil then add transmission oil
Yeah I would go with new fluid and it'll pretty much be a drain and refill transmission fluid change. You won't change all of the fluid that way because a good part of it is trapped inside but it's definitely better than nothing.

hey i have a question why does my 2002 isuzu axiom transmission lights on and than it kinda goes off and on and it sounds like its going to die because it pulls. they are saying that it could be an electric thing. can anybody help me please.
If the light is on then it should give you a fault code, so I would get that diagnosed first.
Hello! I have 96 passport and i cant find the transmission, do you think same like your car the location for the transmission? Thanks
I haven't worked on a 1996 Passport but I believe it's going to be similar.
northwestern2002 Thanks!
northwestern2002 I found it... Do i have to start the engine while im pouring the the transmission fluid or i have to warm it up and turn it off? Thanks!
Do you mean you found the transmission or the dipstick for it? If you mean you found the transmission and it's the type that does not have a dipstick, then please follow the instructions in my video. Thanks.
Thanl you Sir!
Is this transmission pretty reliable for heavy driving use in your opinion?
I wish I could say yes... from what I remember this one was made by GM. And on this particular vehicle it didn’t last more than 90K.
northwestern2002 OK thank you!

Ok thanks for the info I will take it to the mechanic one mechanic told me he will charge 500$ to fix the problem.

¿Para checar a una Isuzu Rodeo 1996 2wd?
Is this the same transmission as a 99 rodeo?
Yeah. I just bought a 99 yesterday. When I went to go check the car out I was baffled as to where the heck the dip stick could be.. But yes, it's the same.
my 3.2 sound the same like a diesel
I can not see what you are talking about. You need to use a light when you make a video.
