All of the Black doctors with whom I work, are African or Caribbean. There are things unique to African American culture that do not foster academic exceptionalism. It's very tough to overcome history and present day toxic race dynamics. However, it CAN be done. It just takes a lot of time and effort.👋🏽👨🏾⚕️
Years ago, when I had a medical procedure at the gyn, the techie was a man of color. He was not a Doctor, but I remember him anyway... I recall how kind, sympathetic and skilled he was. And I am Italian, aged 70, Caucasian. I thought at the time, "There ought to be more staff here from his culture and ethnicity.." Being a retired teacher myself, I ALWAYS stress to my students: how important diversity is in our world. How we each have a part to play, something we can contribute to making things better for all. And what confidence it gives patients to see a diverse staff!!
I am so motivated by this. I am about to start medical school in three weeks and I am a black young man. I am very impressed with what you guys are doing.
I remember watching your videos throughout some of high school and all of college and how I used to feel so motivated to become a physician. And now, as I currently apply to medical school, I just want to thank you for all the knowledge and inspiration you gave me. No matter how small, you changed me and made me a better person and I know I am not the only one... Keep going
Thank you for the kind words! Please pay it forward to the next generation!
