I saw this live at the Orpheum on its opening night here in Minneapolis. My dad saw it in 1997, same theatre, a few days after opening night. Talk about the Circle of Life 🥹
I guess we'll never know why Jason Raize (the original adult Simba) killed himself, of course there are rumors, one of them is that he was rejected by his family for being gay. Another rumor I've read is that he was sick with cancer, another rumor I've read according to Wikipedia is that he didn't know what to do next with his career, another rumor is that he was killed by the government. I don't know if any of those are true. Regardless of all this, he was an amazing actor, singer, and dancer. I hope you are at peace. Rest in peace 🕊️ Jason Raize. Still remembered, never forgotten.
The most prevalent one is that he was unable to come out to his father as bisexual. He lost his mom when he was a toddler and he had a bit of a difficult relationship with his father. The stress of not being able to come out to his dad eventually got to him and made him take his own life.
@@mbari44096 a comment thread under one of the OBC’s TV performances; it’s been a very long time since I found out about this. It pains me to realise the immense loss of Jason. He was really blessed.
@@aericabison23 Thanks you so much for the info. Now that I think about it the song Endless Night makes the story even more tragic. The song is about a son trying to get guidance from his father and find his way, sadly his father didn't answer his call.

@thelionkingfan2019 can you please tell me what theatre the musical took place (where in London) and the date of the play. It will be used for a school project. Thank you so much!
I'll forever hate Disney for not using the Broadway music in the remake, And I'll forever have contempt for Beyonce for taking He Lives In You out for her Garbage song, but this is always gonna be amazing to me.
Fun fact: some months ago, I was playing around with the prospect of what if Favreau and co. had used “He Lives In You” instead of the Beyoncé song for the scene where Simba returns home. I used Windows Movie Maker to make the video- I took the clip of Simba running home from the 2019 movie and I clipped the 2019 version of HLIY to the second bridge of the song (ie the second half of the song). I put the audio at the beginning of the video clip and boom- the timing of the song matches perfectly with the timing of Simba running across the desert. Even the short break before singing the final chorus was synced perfectly with Simba meeting Nala on the way back. I didn’t have to make any changes to the audio or video; everything synced by itself perfectly. It was shocking to see this- I now think that the original idea was to use HLIY in that scene (otherwise why would they record a whole new version of a song most people associated with Simba’s Pride and/or the Broadway musical?), but when money-magnet Beyoncé composed her piece, everyone immediately went into Bey-simping mode and replaced HLIY with her song, then stuck HLIY in the end credits. Look, I like the Beyoncé song. It’s the only song I like from the companion album she produced for the remake. But the words of the song don’t make proper sense given the context in which it is placed in the film. It would have made more sense to put HLIY there, mainly because that’s where the song plays in the Broadway show and it gives perfect closure to the Mufasa’s ghost scene as it represents the newfound confidence with which Simba returns to the Pride Lands.
This was when the show was in Broadway tryout mode, this is where they performed to the public for the very first time before they officially move to Broadway. The show still had SOME things that needed work at this time, cues were late, some on stage mishaps etc. and the creative team took notes to see what worked what needed improvements or what needed to be cut making the show the best it could be
- Different verses for Chow Down and TMOKS. - The tempo of “The Lioness Hunt” is slightly different than in the final version of the show. - Much of the choreography was still in its rudimentary forms. - The hyenas for some reason throw away their helmets/masks during the dance break of “Be Prepared”. - The branch to which Simba holds on to during The Stampede breaks after he falls into Mufasa’s arms. - The makeup and certain costume elements were slightly different than in the final production (Simba didn’t have his bracelets yet, Cub Simba didn’t have his triangle body paint filled out, a bit of Tsidii Le Loka’s real hair hung out from under her headband, &c.). - The lighting and certain technical elements of the staging was still in an underdeveloped form (the waterfall for the flashback scene was a bit late to descend, &c.). - The “They call me Mr. Pig!” scene from the movie was included in the final battle. - The giant metal Pride Rock wasn’t constructed yet, so the final confrontation between Scar and Simba took place in front of the cloth Pride Rock.

Well, they had only one giraffe come in at the beginning, the lyrics of “Chow Down” and “Madness of King Scar” are different, the ending doesn’t have the presentation of Simba and Nala’s cub, the choreography of “Be Prepared” is different (and they throw the hyena hats at one point), the end fight is also very different from the final version (the “They call me Mr. Pig” scene is present, the fight choreography ends with Rafiki chasing a hyena away instead of Timon and Pumbaa doing it, and the big cliff from where Scar falls down wasn’t built yet- this is because Julie’s original idea was to have Scar and Simba fight on the giant ribcage from the Elephant Graveyard set, but this proved rather difficult to do because the ribcage set piece and the Pride Rock set piece are very heavy to move around and switch up, and so, they decided to construct the giant cliff for Simba and Scar to fight on). Some of the musical interludes are slightly different as well (most notably the aerial dance sequence during “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”).
@@daviddanczyk2638 I believe the shadow puppet sequence with the giraffe and cheetah chase was there, but the scene between Mufasa and Zazu didn’t exist yet. You’re right.
@@daviddanczyk2638 that’s not such an important difference really; those bits are usually improvised by the actor in all productions. There are several differences in dialogue throughout this version of the show from its final form.
