I had no idea that Jake can sing so beautifully. Great tone, pitch and enunciation.
Never paid much attention to him as an movie star but I guess he's one of those
    genuinely talented professional.
This being one of my all time favorite Sondheim shows especially I'm so happy
he was chosen to carry this show for his talent not just the name value.

I saw this. I was crazy surprised he pulled this off. He must have worked on the score for well over a year

I've never understood why the line, "It's George, Mother" gets a laugh. The character appears to have memory issues throughout the show and I'd always taken the line as Seurat's mother failing to recognize her own son. It certainly helps to explain the psyche of Seurat's character and his near obsessive need for order and control.

I always inferred it as a level of class snobbery. Her character appears to be moderately affluent and she does not want others to see her as associated with, or related, to this grubby unkempt experimental artist.

Eh. I like Jake and Annaleigh, but there's just no comparison with Mandy and Bernadette! Maybe it was just nerves, but both of them come across really stiff. They don't feel like Georges and Dot, but just actors on stage trying to be them. (I know that's who they are, but I mean in a nebulous sense. I don't see the characters, so my suspension of disbelief isn't there.) And at the same time, they also feel like they're trying to hard. Not in the sense that they're not good and are trying to overcompensate, but like they know they have a to live up to, and attempt to surpass Mandy and Bernadette, but Jake and Annaleigh feel too much like they're trying to impersonate Mandy's Georges, and Bernadette's Dot, instead of making the characters their own.
Also, Annaleigh's Dot seems more sexual here, and I'm not sure if that's the direction she should've gone with the role. Dot was known for her beauty, but she was also sweet, and genuine. She was very much in love with Georges, and did what she could to please him, so the tragedy of her character comes from knowing Georges will never make time for her, and that his art will always come first-- so she leaves for her sake, because she wants stability, and not to be treated as an afterthought. Annaleigh's Dot gives me the impression that she would be more likely to bail and not wait around on Georges. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, but Georges isn't willing to make Dot more of a priority, even though he deeply loves her. He's never willing to reciprocate what Dot sacrifices for him, and in the end, he loses the woman he was in love with.)

They were great together--not at all like Mandy and Bernadette except that they also had their own kind of chemistry. The show felt young and fresh again and was quite funny. I still prefer the original and the Britain-to-Broadway revival, but this production was well worth seeing and produced an excellent cast album.

I agree about Jake being stiff and like he's trying too hard, but he isn't usually a stage actor so he just kind of seems out if his element. Though I did enjoy his performance when I saw this production, I always felt like he just wasn't quite settled into being in stage in front of a love audience. I disagree with you on Annaleigh. She was effortless and perfect in this role. She had her moments of homage to Bernadette, but also had her very own flair and fleshed out character. To menit wasn't her being more sexy, but a little more self aware of how beautiful she was.

I have to disagree, I don't think it's stiff acting and also the person that said Jake isn't used to stage acting, he's done stage acting since he was 21, he's done at least 5 productions I believe so I think he's pretty used to it of course not as much as people who do stage acting predominantly. Everyone of course will have a different opinion though so I appreciate that. Just personally I think they did a great job. I guess it's difficult to look at something objectively when it's being compared to an original version.
      I actually prefer Jake's performance to Mandy's I'll be honest 🙈

I prefer Mandy Patinkin but I've never been the biggest fan of Bernadette Peters so Annaleigh was amazing imo.

I just don't like annaleigh in the role? I think she's an incredibly talented actress but I think Dot isn't at all right for her.

These roles were pretty much tailored to Mandy & Bernadette so it’s pretty hard to inhabit a role written with someone else in mind. That said, Ashford is clearly a trained singer and that helps carry her through. Gyllenhaal on the other hand is doing his best Mandy Patinkin impression throughout the whole show, especially when singing and it creates this unreleased quality on top of the artificial vibrato he pumps on to sound like Patinkin. The predictable outcome is that when he has to actually go beyond the impression he’ll be shouting and … 05:54 …yup…that’s shouting all right

Couldn't disagree more. Jake's singing voice is so smooth, and he makes the part his own.
