"We say that if America has entered the war to make the world safe for democracy, she must first make democracy safe in America. How else is the world to take America seriously, when democracy at home is daily being outraged, free speech suppressed, peaceable assemblies broken up by overbearing and brutal gangsters in uniform; when free press is curtailed and every independent opinion gagged? Verily, poor as we are in democracy, how can we give of it to the world?" ~ Emma Goldman

The U.S. has become so addicted to the use of force through wars that it cannot see any other way around it - not when its major war industries depend upon the constant oiling of the gears of its war machine to keep turning.

    Mr. Wolf:
You are not addressing the root cause of these wars which is the fact that the over-financialized, deindustrialized US economy is failing relative to those of China and other Asian countries. The US is no longer has the economic capacity to maintain hegemony over its global empire and so it is resorting to military means via proxies in order to retain its dominance. Once you understand that fact, everything else follows logically.

I think that I do because fixing this longstanding stupidity without a war is a lot more complicated, difficult and painful than Mr. Wolf makes it out to be.
The American people do not understand the magnitude and scope of the difficult underlying economic problems that are driving these wars and, what is worse, do not want to try to understand them. They want Ronald Reagan (or a similar demagogue) to tell them that there is nothing to fear and that they don’t have to do any work or make any sacrifices. That ain’t gonna fly anymore.
When the American people finally understand that they will have to make sacrifices and accept less than what they currently have, they will refuse and demand war instead, even though war would make them even more poor and extremely miserable.
That is what is missing from this discussion.

Imagine if America spent their cash in on infrastructure, housing and medical. Imagine not having a stupid debt, inflation or abundant crime. Imagine all that money was self invested, instead of foreign wars. #ImagineThat

But can we delve into how this relates to capitalism, and the abysmal need of the military industrial complex to perpetuate these conflicts to maximize profits? How executives from arms companies gain cabinet posts? We are headed into a dark era indeed.

It is disingenuous for Wolff to expect anything else. Hitler taught us that peace comes after war not appeasement.
Appeasing your enemies is a sure route to slavery and not for Wolff or Biden or anybody else to expect a victim of aggression to accept.

Freedom should be the right to choose your form of government. Yet when colonized, oppressed people choose communist military aid to free them from the shackles of western colonialism, this doesn't sit well with the U.S. who labels them an enemy. Modern day U.S. colonialism still exists in the form of indebteding 3rd world countries then making demands on those countries for repayment in U.S. dollars. It's not surprising that those countries have turn to Communist China ifor financial relief via the ongoing movement for BRICS membership.

One of the most insightful analysis of U.S. foreign policy since the Second World War is the 1984 book "Endless Enemies," written by Wall Street Journal reporter Jonathan Kwitny. There is an important lesson provided by the history of the British Empire, which is that empire's are very costly and the cost is invariably absorbed by that portion of a nation's population least able to shift the cost to others. Wars of territorial acquisition have always been fought to gain control of desired and needed natural resources as well as an enslaved or nearly-enslaved labor force.

  • @richardwong2950

Western military strategy over centuries is "war first peace later on terms dictated by the victor". Chinese philosophy is " peace first, and war is the last resort".
Despite China's military might it has not invaded the Philippines although the Filipino government is urging its people and fishermen to fight over a few small islands, which the fishermen don't fish there. This is in fact a normal tactic supplanted by the US (CIA). The previous Filipino government was good friends with China, but the current Filipino president is the son of the late president Marcos senior, who was known for widespread corruption, with billions of US assets held and are still held within the US territories. Something is going on behind the scene because the president was not anti-China when campaigning during his election but has changed completely against China since.
If a small country were to annoy the US persistently for a long time it will bomb that small country into pieces already. China is patient and tolerant whether you agree or disagree with their claim of those islands.

Married there with a beautiful Xhosa lady, then went back to Europe with her between 1997 to live and work, before retiring in 2019 and returning to sunny SA. 2 of 2: *This is how you always need to vote:*
We must fully resist and _always vote_ against (& less authoritarian than) both the Democratic *and* Republican Parties- including Trump, Vivek Ramaswamy, Rand Paul (He’s _no_ Ron Paul), Warren Davidson, Ron Johnson, and all other Republicans.
For _all_ public positions. And this same strategy applies against the same one or more party-monopolies in _all_ countries worldwide.
Real libertarians will never be Republicans or Republican loyalists. Never vote for _any_ Democratic member or loyalist either.
You can always _write-in_ an anti-authoritarian person if no candidates for a position fit that bill. This will continuously reduce the power of _all_ authoritarian parties in the party monopolies. Until our task is complete.

Kudos for the topic, Professor. I imagine there is pressure to emphasize Gaza for purposes of attracting eyeballs and revenue. But the unfolding genocide in Gaza, tragic and heart-braking as it is, is on a scale of tens of thousands of people whereas the rapidly escalating crisis in Ukraine is on a realistic scale of nine billion dead and nuclear winter. So thank you for being an internationalist, a 21st century socialist and a compassionate human being for emphasizing this moral imperative. BTW, I caught you on the Zero Hour with a similar theme and it reminded me of an unrelated question regarding FDR's first term. I have heard you say more than once something to the effect that a small coterie of leftists (Communists, socialists & trade unionists) engaged with FDR early on and persuaded him that the best way to avoid revolution was to promulgate the New Deal. With cursory searches, I have failed to discover any pertinent documenattion. Could you kindly recommend sources or search terms to learn about this lobbying effort?

Then we click that it shows a list of languages including Chinese Traditional. We click that and nothing comes out because it doesn’t work. On Google people call it a bug.
However recently many travelers vloggers in China have auto generated Chinese subtitles that actually work. Sample vloggers include Sun Kissed Bucket List, Ken Abroad, Two Mad Explorers.

1 of 2: *This is how you always need to vote:*
We must fully resist and _always vote_ against (& less authoritarian than) both the Republican *and* Democratic Parties- including all of the squad, Bernie Sanders, Edward Markey, the justice democrats, & all other democrats.
For _all_ public positions. And this same strategy applies against the same one or more party-monopolies in _all_ countries worldwide.
Real progressives will never be Democratic Members or Democratic loyalists. Never vote for _any_ Republican member or loyalist either.
You can always _write-in_ an anti-authoritarian person if no candidates for a position fit that bill. This will continuously reduce the power of _all_ authoritarian parties in the party monopolies. Until our task is complete.
Repeat strategy for all new authoritarian parties that emerge.

It is an unfortunate ill of the world that true peace makers are never appreciated but are more often than not, vilified for being "soft". Hence, stalwarts for peace and common sense like Bernie Sanders, will never ever get the majority support that he needs and have asked for several times in the past.
Here, in Australia, we have a hew Prime Minister in Anthony Albanese who have advocated a "more gentler, civilized" way of politics and foreign policy - and has been constantly attacked since, for "being soft" and "not manly enough" to be a leader. Around Europe, you find firebrand extreme right wingers getting the popular vote over the liberals, even as Trump, a now convicted felon, still gets a majority vote as he spews volumes of vitriol in an attack dog fashion.
Where is peace to be found when the public flock to the "Rambo" types and give them their support? Given our propensity and almost homicidal liking for violence, if Jesus Christ is to come again, would the crowd call for Him to be crucified once again?

Hate is not propogated in Buddhism practice...

    • @George-k6o9t
      @George-k6o9t 3 місяці тому

It may not but it has still not been able to quench the demon in all humankind - eg the Tibetan Buddhist monks who cruelly enslaved their people from the 7th-10th century onwards, the Japanese invaders of China and South East Asia and subjected the people in the conquered lands to some of the worst acts of depravity were all Buddhists, the persecution of the Rohingyas in Myanmar by Buddhists, etc.
Gautama Buddha preached not to have hate in our hearts and make peace and so did Jesus Christ, often called, "the Prince of Peace" but do their followers actually follow what they have been told to? Some of the greatest crimes against humanity were committed by "religious types" using their religion as excuses to commit wars and hate on their neighbors. No matter what their religions and philosophies say, if their so-called followers do not do what they have been called to do but still continue to claim that they are Christians or Buddhists, they are all nothing but hypocrites and we have seen so much of this already.

One would think that a nation that professes to be the champion of democracy would want peace, but the United States (US), by its own actions, does not. The fact of the matter is that the world considers the US as the biggest threat to peace. Major General Smedley Butler’s book WAR IS A RACKET, and President Eisenhower’s final speech tried to warn the American people about that. The US’ proxy war in Ukraine, and the US’ unconditional support of the artificial colonial settler state of Israel’s genocide against the indigenous people of Palestine have proven their warnings to be true many times over! The US does nothing that would benefit 100% of US citizens. That is why 38 million Americans live today in poverty, while 9 of the 10 richest men in the world are US citizens. That is why the US has refused to comply with 42 United Nations’ (UN) resolutions demanding that it immediately return Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans.
The UN will hold its annual Puerto Rico decolonization hearing on Thursday, June 20, 2024, but the US’ “free press” won’t tell you that. The US does not want you to know that it has been committing a crime against humanity in Puerto Rico for the past 126 years. The UN will again issue another resolution saying exactly the same thing as all the others. The US will surely ignore that one too, because it is really an oligarchy. Oligarchies never want peace!

The REAL genuine receiver of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter declared in 1968 that "the United States is the the most warlike nation on earth". It has been in more conflicts and wars during its 300 years of existence than in years of peace, has 900 military bases in foreign countries and 12 super aircraft carrier fleets, any one of which would have been able to reduce a medium sized country into rubble. Like Ancient Rome that enforced its "Pax Romana", they brought hell on earth and called that, "peace".
