Very nicely done. I do peyote tubes for imitation eagle feathers using two drop, but my patterns are far simpler than yours. Very much enjoyed the instructional and hope to expand my repertoire. Appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge and experience.
Great video. I'm very new to beading. I find building the grids and patterns oddly satisfying. Also the beauty of the work when it starts to take shape is very motivating. It's like 'wow, *I* created that.'
Thanks for sharing your personal gifts and investing yourself in humanity. Thanks for inspiring me to get back to beading. It's way cheaper than a therapist and I have something to show for it when I finish! It's kind of like WD40 for my brain. Lisa M.
Thank you so very much for making these videos - I really enjoy your approach and your Fearless Math! You are helping me look at tubular peyote in a whole new way! Peace and joy to you.
Thank you so much Van !!!You are an extremely super cool cat!I am working on my even count tubular peyote and making my own patterns ..your tutorials are very helpful! I subscribed to your channel..I look forward to crossing paths here on youtube as well as more beading videos !Ciao for now!
I just started seed beading crafter three things so far just random patterns maybe not even pattern at all but I've noticed to get this your level it will require lots of thought and planning , I'm sure I can do do it I come from a long line of beaders for generations I still have my great grandmothers moccasins she did back in 1912 and a jean jacket my uncle put a thunder eagle on in 62 , you do beautiful work . 🦅
Kia ora thanks for that bit of enlightenment about repeating pattern design, however I never did do well with math even though I love math if that makes sense lol. I love your calm demure natural teaching technique with a tad of humour your awesome thanks. I will ward off the headachey feeling I get with math problems to get a solution but however we all need to grow and its time to break my cycle lol I may even grow to love it and sound like a mathematician. 'm keen to see the next vid....exciting times. Nga mihinunuii ki a koe mo tou mahi ataahua (thanks for sharing).
Hi Van, Just watched this video again. I think it was my third time just now. I think I finally understand a little better, so I'm going to start on my lighter cover now and I'll let you know what happens. :)
I enjoyed your laid back approach so much that I had to subscribe :) I noticed the comment about not selling your work..I have to wonder if it's for the same reason I rarely sell a piece I've made (I find myself giving them away as fast as I make them..hahaha). Looking forward to browsing your collection and finding a bit of inspiration along the way ..There's an old quote that comes to mind as I watch your instruction style..I believe it was attributed to B. Franklin but was in fact borrowed from the Native Americans of the day..“Tell me and I'll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I'll understand.”
Have you ever tried to tie it around a piece of paracord or insert a cord of some type, to keep it ridged especially on the bigger dia. Ones? Great video will watch it again. Picked up some good ideas from you . Thanks for the post.
Hi Van thanks for video just tried this out, had 42 beads on and did the repeat of the flowers on the 6 bead basis, must say looks really good BUT now I don't know where to go next to get the diagonal stripes to match up, but not going to give up I have to get this right because I want to make some beautiful lighter covers like yours. I can't thank you enough for your help really appreciate it. Thank you.
Okay, so just to be clear, you should have gotten 7 'flowers', hope you did. As far as the diagonals go, there's so many different kinds, I usually try to get a 'V' between the flowers, of black, and then the next row I will put my first color in there. Then it's a simple matter to put one color on each side of that first, and then start movin' left (or right) from there. I want to urge you again to not just go for a lighter straight out, but to do a practice piece like I showed in the video, using only 12 beads for two rows (6 beads per row), as well as a fairly short string. This will let your mind & body figure this stuff out and avoid crushing your spirit in the process. Good luck and keep me posted, I'll do what I can to help :).
Are you still beading? You should try to bead around a size 550 or bigger paracord to make a necklace! A lot of us Native Americans do that for lanyards, wristlets and necklaces! 😊 I loved your tutorial.
Nice video, well explained. Always start small, don't try the monstrous projects as the first one! I think your math is well explained although if you have done peyote before, it's a bit easier to understand what you're talking about with how patterns work. I looked on your video roster and none in the last year. Hope you are doing ok. Keep beading! Great videos!
I'm not very good at life changes, so hope yours are of the more pleasant sort. Enjoying your beading videos. Some of it I haven't seen this well explained, nor as entertaining, anywhere else. :-)
your amazing at what you do!!! Thank you for some of the tips,..ive been trying to do some patterns on a computer program but i still dont understand how to read it...and im not the best at math lol but thanks again
RJ Renz Check out some of my other videos on design, maybe that will help. End of the day, just dive in, spend some time making mistakes, etc. Heck, make up your own pattern as you go and see where it takes you. Happy beading!
I'm just starting out I've made my own pattern but I'm so lost :( I really want to learn this as I have so many ideas but I'm having a bad time trying to figure out how to do this. could you please explain how to read a pattern
What stitch do u use? Do u have a full video tutorial on how to make the hole case? I would like to make one but can't find a full video tutorial on how to make them. Love your videos I love how detailed u make them, I hate videos when they don't explain it properly or enough but yours r great. I've only just started doing any kind of beading, I'm disabled, I have a very rare condition and I'm always in severe amount of pain so doing heading really keeps my mind off of the pain, would be really great if u could help.
To Janice: Hi Janice, thanks for watching and commenting. I hope you find a better channel to suit your needs with fewer distractions. I recommend TCBeads and also many of the online beading stores offer training videos as well. They are much more formal and focused. I would have replied directly to your comment, but for some reason some of the comments don't let me! Thanks Google. Happy beading -- Van
how do you bead a bottom for lighter covers? in just doing a simple horizontal stripe rainbow with delica beads they are size 12 so I actually needed 48 of them compared to the seed beads. the seed beads I have are size 10 and just wasn't liking it as much as the delica beads. another reason I did something simple is this is my first time doing tubular even count peyote. I like it.
How would you close off your necklace if you added a clasp? It looks like you beaded ends together on another video but is there a way or need to go from 12 (two rows of six) to more of a point and then add the clasp.
Please please PLEASE tell me how you bead around a curved edge like at the bottom of the tubular red yellow black and white piece you showed at the end of the video. I know it involves a decrease, can you do a video on that? Your decrease is so neat and you even have the yellow pattern at the bottom of it. I’ve tried about twenty times and I’m missing something still. I’m begging you! Thanks
Look around youtube for flat circular peyote. You'd build that piece out until it's the same size (row count) as your tubular peyote component, and then stitch them together. In the case of the three stick covers I built, I actuall started building out flat and then switched to tubular so it's all one piece.ua-cam.com/video/9QyAdGQHjFw/v-deo.html for example.
VaniRex thank so much! I tried myself with the flat peyote but can never get it as neat as you do I have to try with delicas they are much more uniform. Also I tried connecting tubular and circular flat it worked but looked like two pieces attached ya know lol . I didn’t think to flow from one to another I will definitely test that out. How did I not think of that? Lol I appreciate your swift feedback! ✌🏽Happy beading.
When you say a 4 pattern or a 6...what do you mean? Do you put a different color bead in every fourth spot? I have been trying to figure this out with lots of frustration...I've done small tubular designs before, but I've always used graph paper but once I start trying to get fancy, it never seems to come out right. I was trying to follow along, but you don't really explain that part...please help! lol I'm trying to get a piece done for a pow wow
Lisa Wilson Well, I jumped right to tubular peyote and never looked back. I felt it was the beading technique I'd known all my life. It seems to combine everything I enjoy doing, I wish I got to do it more. Patterns are always correct. You did it, didn't you? There you go. Understand your mistakes, learn, and go for the next. See what rolls out from within. That's all.
Copy away! My hopev though, is you'll learn the elements of design and do your own...the feelings I get from doing that are freakin ' awesome! Happy beading.
I'm out in South Dakota on retreat, don't have a lot of time for beadin' :). However, why don't you check out ua-cam.com/video/06bs8YVCOYI/v-deo.htmlm0s. In all the times I've 'closed off' tubular peyote, it's really always been backwards, because I've STARTED with flat circular and then switched to tubular when it got wide enough. Also, if ya search around for 'flat circular peyote' you should find some videos that'll help ya. I'll put this one on my bucket list, so keep a lookout, cuz once I finish up out here in SD & get back to Oregon I'm gonna do a bunch of stuff. Thanks for asking, good luck, and hope you take the time to show me your stuff, someday.
Addicted RainbowLoom Check out ua-cam.com/video/T78_eotLUdY/v-deo.html for some tips in that area, lol. I work on a felt mat as well as on carpet, and yes, beads fall on the floor and I periodically get down there and try to pick them all up. This happens more than I like cuz I'm so freakin' clumsy! Happy beading.
VaniRex the mat your calling a felt mat,, its called a beading matt , just for the reasons of the beads don't go fling off the bead matt, lol you do some really nice work, I need to have you for a teacher! I use delica beads, size 11/0 keep up the great work you do, any really easier patterns that you can throw my way would be great . :)
Leah Mondloch Hey thanks -- I do what I can. I get that 'hey, know any great patterns' a lot; I'm not sure what to do. My goal is to really help others to find the patterns within themselves, not simply parrot what I do. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's the difference between teaching someone to sing a song vs. teaching them how to create their OWN songs...Feel free to use any of the patterns I present, and if you see a specific one you like, maybe we can work something out. I'm kinda super busy at the moment, but like to help where I can. Happy beading!
Hello, thanks a lot for sharing. I have one question around 23 min when you made extended flower with 6 pattern, you never said at which row you put red in as red appears in between. 1st row is 1 yellow 2 black (2x) then row of yellow and then you said 1 yellow 2 black 2 times. am I doing it wrong or you skipped one row with red in it? Thanks a lot in advance.
Ana Blackwell Hi, yeah, perhaps I didn't explain that part well enough. What I recommend is you get some hex paper and work it out, perhaps watch ua-cam.com/video/SImcVA9S9Tw/v-deo.html and see if that clears the problem up. If not, lemme know.
Thanks a lot for quick responding. I have graph paper, so I will try to work it out myself as I guess I have to learn how to draw my own design and even more important how to read it :)
VaniRex your work is crazy amazing- I hope I become as good as you someday! I’m working on it- but I’m trying a flag- just wondering if you had ever done one. Have a great day bead wizard!
I am never going to learn this :( What am I doing wrong? you say skip one, and then you have only 5 beads on, in the first row?? I just can't figure it out :( pls. help
+DKStella Give ua-cam.com/video/T78_eotLUdY/v-deo.html a shot, and see if that doesn't answer your questions. I totally understand the pain and suffering you're going through! However, it doesn't last long at all, once you get a few successful rows down, and that tube starts to form, you're gonna just go, "Hell yeah!" There are also a few other tutorials out there, if my 'teaching' style sucks. Keep me posted, and if you need more help, let me know, I'll do what I can.
I'm familiar with the general look of the fkag, but unsure of specific problem. Any rectangular object is not going tob look as good with peyote, though. You might want to look at square looming, instead. If possible, gimme a link to a pic or something, I'll so what I can.
This was the chillest beading video I've ever seen. I think I've got it and I'm super relaxed. Thank you!

Thank you, it has become a little clearer to me. Now I will have to try to make a pattern

No, I haven't beaded in years, now.

Interesting. I would probably put some rope in the middle of that necklace if I wanted to make it bigger. To stop it from warping.
I'm just starting out I've made my own pattern but I'm so lost :( I really want to learn this as I have so many ideas but I'm having a bad time trying to figure out how to do this. could you please explain how to read a pattern

I don't bead the bottoms, I use a piece of leather for the bottom, instead.
Thank you I will try I do not speak English a hug from Colombia
Hi love your work, but what size beads are you using, 11’s, 13’s or 15’s?
❤
🤩🤩🤩
What size beads are you using to have a 42 bead band to start? I am using size 10
You answered your own question I guess I should have waited a little longer lol
How would you close off your necklace if you added a clasp?
It looks like you beaded ends together on another video but is there a way or need to go from 12 (two rows of six) to more of a point and then add the clasp.

What brand of beads do you use
Toho or Miyuki.
Hi have you ever done one on a round lighter
I've only ever done bic lighters, but the principles are the same.
Thank you 🖤🖤
When you say a 4 pattern or a 6...what do you mean? Do you put a different color bead in every fourth spot? I have been trying to figure this out with lots of frustration...I've done small tubular designs before, but I've always used graph paper but once I start trying to get fancy, it never seems to come out right. I was trying to follow along, but you don't really explain that part...please help! lol I'm trying to get a piece done for a pow wow
Van how long did it take you in the beginning to get peyote stitch right? Once you have the stitch down all it takes is making patterns correct?
Lisa Wilson Well, I jumped right to tubular peyote and never looked back. I felt it was the beading technique I'd known all my life. Hi! Love your designs a lot.I really want to try some for myself.Do you mind if people copy them? Thanks and love your channel too!
Copy away! My hopev though, is you'll learn the elements of design and do your own...the feelings I get from doing that are freakin ' awesome! Happy beading.
How do you end it. What kind of clasp
do u have any videos for beginners, I would love to make this kinda stuff for my kids
try ua-cam.com/video/T78_eotLUdY/v-deo.html
How do u get from ur tube shape then to a closed end without totally messing things up? Can u put up a video that shows how u do that?
I'm out in South Dakota on retreat, don't have a lot of time for beadin' :). However, why don't you check out ua-cam.com/video/06bs8YVCOYI/v-deo.htmlm0s. are those delicas or seed beads?
Seed
That's so cool I got tiny beads but they so tiny I don't want all over the floor I wish I can make that with out them fall apart.
Addicted RainbowLoom Check out ua-cam.com/video/T78_eotLUdY/v-deo.html for some tips in that area, lol. This is intense but I like it.
I like it BECAUSE it's intense...
i was wondering if you could tell me where you get your beads
I recommend FIre Mountain Gems, but look around. Also, look for a local bead store with a decent selection in the 11/0 round category.
Where do you get your beads ?
Where do you get smaller beads in so many color?
it takes a little hunting, but there are many online stores. It took some time :)
Hello, thanks a lot for sharing. Hi Nic, I'm afraid I failed the Google+ test, lol. Great art, btw! Migwetch, and happy beading...
I was wondering if u had a beaded bottom pattern for the lighter case. If so will u share.
how do you change direction?
Not sure what you mean, I never change direction when sewing the beads, it's one ig spiral all the way through.
Have you ever done a flag mixed into your designs? Just wondering
No.
VaniRex your work is crazy amazing- I hope I become as good as you someday! I’m working on it- but I’m trying a flag- just wondering if you had ever done one. Have a great day bead wizard!
What size beads you have?
I generally use Japanese seed beads round 11/0
thanks I'll try
How do u do the necklaces? Do u bead around a cord"
No,there's nothing inside, just beads & string.
What brand and size beads do you use?
Toho and Miyuki seed beads, size 11/0
where can we get the pattern?
Hi, I'm sorry, but I don't provide them because my hope is you will dream up your own :). Oh yeah, and cuz I'm lazy. Happy beading!
Beautiful work! It "sounds" so confusing with the math involved...
Sue Corbett Thank you for your comment -- it has set off a chain of thought and realization with me...happy beading!
Are you at Kelly Point Park?

The gourd (or Brick stitch) is simply peyote on its side!
Hi Van im wondering if you could help me im trying to make a rebel flag i can get the diagonal going up but not down could you help me thanks Tina
I'm familiar with the general look of the fkag, but unsure of specific problem. Any rectangular object is not going tob look as good with peyote, though. You might want to look at square looming, instead. If possible, gimme a link to a pic or something, I'll so what I can.
Ok
i gut on google but it wont let me send it to you
Try Facebook, Van Bain. You can find link on my intro. On cellphone, which is challenging enough.
Depends on the size of the bead too lol
