The excitement when a "maybe this'll do it" project works is so worth the work it takes to get it there. If you can get it done with what you have on hand it's even more satisfying, awesome job man 👍👍
I agree. I am under no assumption that this is a substitution for a weld but for a temporary solution on a not-often-used mechanism/tool, it will do for now until I learn to weld!
Good job trying something that most people would never attempt 😅lil advice from a fellow explorer you can take the selector switch out of another broken ratchet most will be very similar or craftsman is lifetime warranty you can go to lowes and get new one if wanted but most of all get a welder watch a video and start welding weld something and try to break it apart once you get good at your welds holding then go for pretty f anyone who judges ur welds cause everyone can do better
I would round off the switch so that the edges arent sharp and dont catch on anything, switching it on accident. If you wanna go a step further, you can add some nerling so that it is easier for you and harder for it to catch on something. But id do it on some pieces not connected just in case it ends up being to short and it becomes a struggle to take off.
You could have removed the switch and filed the switch a bit so it’s more in line with a rectangle, then press fit the handle. I just needed to do this on a Proto 1/2 ratchet a few weeks back
i think grinding down just the one side of the hole so the switch fits snuggly and comes through to weld them together, (iv never don't anything like this but i think that would have been my approach if i saw something like this)
@@learnsavediy Very affordable repair/rebuild kits that include all the internals are available as well. What you did is better. Reinventing the wheel is how we learn more and eventually make better wheels.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Sometimes you just need to try something new and jump into the unknown!
In my opinion the JB weld is very temporary .
I'm pretty sure that is a proven fact

one drop away
You'd be surprised how strong that stuff is.
selector switch? *ATF has entered the chat*
I wish UA-cam would allow GIF comments haha
Nice rebuild. I was always taught to oil rachets, never grease.
Thanks!
Now you need something to fix with that ratchet
Agreed!
Great job! Didn’t seem like it would hold but it did so great job
We’ll see how long it holds up!

I tried rounding the edges but got a little lazy but nice tips! I’ll know better for next time

Nice idea! Any tips for making a form around the switch shaft?
@learnsavediy edge of a die grinder, just so that it's not round would work,
I have 2!
Is your switch held on with a set screw or just one piece? I’m trying to figure out if it broke or fell off

I like it! I should have asked YT folks first before attempting but now you’ve given me an idea if I run into a similar issue going forward.
saying you have a lot to learn sounds like it's new hobby or area for you, so damn good job bud!
I didn’t grow up learning how to fix things so I’m always trying to challenge myself 🙂
You could get that replaced at true value
Craftsman was willing to warranty the whole ratchet but I figured why not have some fun!

But you didn't test the rachet out to make sure it actually worked or not
