I read somewhere that they deliberately pronounced Hekate's name as "Hektate" because they didn't want to disrespect her by accidentally calling on her for this "mock spell".
One thing about this movie that i remember is that Angelov is a serial killer who marks his victims by branding them with a ring that he wears before strangling them. If i remember correctly, he marks Gillian before he gets killed and that "opens" her to the possibility of being possessed. She was about to be his next victim when Sally shows up to rescue her. Also! Gillian uses Belladonna as a sedative to help herself sleep. Belladonna is a sedative that can be very toxic when consumed. The name Belladonna comes from the fact that in times long past, women would use a solution containing Belladonna to dilate their pupils to appear more beautiful.
I'm definitely more of a Sally. I always felt that when Sally said "there is no devil in the craft", she was implying that witchcraft itself is neutral - neither good nor bad. And that kinda dives into how you described it as it being a skill, skills themselves being neither good nor bad, instead only the intent in which it is used - which heavily relies on the person. She was showing Gary she was harmless as she was using her skills to manufacture bath oils and that the aunts just like to meddle in people's love lives.
I also kind of presume it was a product of its times, wherein Wicca and Witchcraft were treated as basically interchangeable, particularly by Hollywood. In the 90s, you basically didn't find books in the Spirituality/New Age section of a bookstore that weren't about Wicca, or at least conflating a lot of Wiccan rules into whatever type of craft it was speaking on. Lots of frequent espousing of how "witches don't worship Satan, because he's a Christian construct," and the belief in "An it harm none, do as thou will." It feels like they might be using the statement that they don't practice devil worship because their belief doesn't have a devil to enforce and imply the latter.
@@MokiefraggleI still use that general idea whenever I get accused of devil worship (which thankfully hasn't happened in years). I do, however, tend to word it with more of a bite. Something along the lines of "The devil is a Christian deity, and I'm not a Christian". The implication of Christians acknowledging their devil's existence as some sort of weak devil worship (which is incorrect in itself) highlights the vast difference between the Christian mindset and the Pagan mindset. I'm a Pagan who practices witchcraft, for an easy frame of reference.
Just read an interview with the Director (Vanity Fair). Apparently they had a witchcraft consultant for the movie, but didn't want to pay her what she asked. She said she would curse the film if they didn't. He sent that up to the legal department and the legal department said "not going to mess with this" and cut her a check. Also, the books are really good. All of them
Slight details you've gotten wrong she was paid "quite handsomely" but when asked to fly out because the actors wanted to meet her but she wanted gross points on the film and the rights to publish an offical cook book so thinking they were trying to buy her off with a hotel and a meeting with to famous people she called the director putting a curse on the film and after that he took the recording of the curse to legal and they paid her for the extra visit but she didn't get everything she wanted which honestly is pretty messed up with her because her demands were pretty insane for just a consultant
@@freddyfaerie3499 You're right, those asks are absurd. If she threatened a curse either way, she's an awful Witch. Yuck. That story either way taints the film a bit for me.
@@potatopirate5557 it doesn't taint the film for me it taints her. She also didn't threaten to curse the film she cursed it to extort more money after she had already been paid
I wondered if Hearth would notice in the scene when Sally is running torwards her first man, the dog breaks from the pack and starts chasing behind her like the dog in the tarot card, The Fool. I thought that little detail was amazing and I need to watch this movie again to see if I can find more fun little clues and easter eggs.
@@gabrieladerre2862 Absolutely. I love the idea of the dog symbolizing her beginning her journey as the fool. I would have never recognized that myself. It's a beautiful perspective
Love this movie too! I always thought that her spell became a generational curse wasn't just that she was so distraught but she was also pregnant. When she cast the spell upon herself she also cast it on her child or her unborn children. We often don't think of future consequences in the heat of the moment.
There’s some truth to this biologically! When females are born, they have all the eggs that they will ever have in their life, unlike males who continually make more of their reproductive cells.
One of the women that worked at the front desk of my building I live in wanted me to read her cards all the time. I told her I would do it but only one time because I felt she would get addicted to getting her cards read and she has to live her life and make decisions for her self the cards can guide you but you create your own reality
I thought the scene where Sally is depressed in bed, and "links" with Jillian, way out there in The World, and suddenly Jil is there in Sal's bed, fully clothed, lying next to Sal; and they have what seems to be a long conversation here Jil is in lounging in front of the fireplace, and she tells Sal that she has to get up and move on for her daughters...but at the end of that scene, the camera pulls back and they're back in the same original position... I felt like that was kind of a spectral travel scene. Jil didn't *actually* travel home to the island and back to her BF; she traveled via the Astral.
Something you may have missed or not know, forgive me if you do--- "He will hear my call a mile away"...In the scene where Sally realises something is wrong with Gilly, she cries "No, no, no" and rushes to the house...Gary hears Sally's distrest call (intuitively), knows something is wrong, hence why he suddenly rushes to the attic. 🌔🖤
Whay about the one green eye and one eye blue ?..In the hotel room scene ..after Gary and Sally share a passionate kiss Sally gets a close look at Gary's eyes and reminded of her botched anti love spell ( Amas Veritas) that she casted as a child
When Sally invites all the women that bullied her, I felt that they only bullied her because she was different, in a good way, and them coming to help was a way of them accepting her because Sally finally accepted herself. I relate so much to Sally more than Jillian. ❤
Sally invited them because she knew they knew she was a witch. They all already knew and they all accepted what she was. Their irritation due to her not admitting it was very obvious. Think of the scene in the store where the cop realized her tea/coffee had a spoon that mixed the tea on its own. If that can happen without her noticing as an adult imagine what happened when she was a child. Being called out like you lack intelligence never makes people happy. Sally “I’m not a witch” People “But I just saw…” Sally “I AM NOT A WITCH!” Now put together a whole town that believes she’s a witch and her practically calling them out for their lack of intelligence. Heck even her employee complained that she just needed to admit it already because she was fooling no one.
I'm pretty sure that when they assembled the women of the town for the banishment it's under the guide of "they're trying to get rid of an abusive boyfriend". No matter how much I detest someone (and I can hold a hell of a grudge) I would be there in a heartbeat.
Please read the books. They're fantastic! Practical Magic is the first book, but it is third in the Owens timeline. The second book is the story of the aunts. The third book is the story of Maria Owens, and the fourth book is the sequel to Practical Magic.
I have great news for you: the movie is actually based on a book and the book is part of a book series. I think that another one of the books in the series is focused on the aunts!!
The last time I watched this movie I noticed that the aunts are doing some weaving on a loom when the first love spell scene happens, and the woman knocks on their door. I am super into fiber arts, hand spinning, knitting, weaving with natural fibers. It helps me feel more connected to the earth to wear things made from scratch from natural fiber, and I think it's so cool that they included this in the movie! It totally matches up with the aunts style too, their handmade, mended, antique clothes totally seem like they could have been hand made or passed down from other women who made them in the family.
Weaving, knitting, crochet and the like can also be considered a form of knot magic. I'm currently making a blanket and putting intention into it as I knit it.
In Greek folklore throwing salt or spitting over the left shoulder is happening simply because this is where bad spirits or bad energy or the evil eye is sitting. We can see similar things to other cultures too. In Carlos Castañeda books, Don Juan is revealing that death is our eternal companion and is located one arm length behind the left shoulder. But also in Christianity's pop images you often see the demon speaking to you over the left shoulder and the angel from the right one. Generally the left side is consider to be the sinister one in many traditions. Thank you for this beautiful video, Practical Magic is definitely one of my absolute favourite movies.
The book and the movies are very different but both great. One scene that I wish they had included in the film was the outcome of the love spell at the beginning. He grows so obsessed that he literally won't leave her alone so she returns to have the spell undone, but the aunts ignore her. I just think it would help illustrate why you have to "be careful what you wish for. "
Practical Magic is one of my favourite movies! I recognized a lot of elements in witchcraft that I use in my own practice, such as kitchen witchcraft. Alice Hoffman really got it right. Her other prequels are also real page-turners. I wish you a blessed Samhain! Blessed Be! )O(
Another bit of trivia and I cannot remember where I read it, but in the midnight Margaritas scene, all the ladies were actually drunk, because they were drinking real Margaritas while filming! I love that. 🖤🌸🖤💮🖤 thank you for the great video (new sub).
Ohhh I LOVE Practical Magic so much. I adore the Owens family and the fact that the sisters share the line on sisterhood, one sister being brunette, the other being a red head. Their house is to die for and their greenhouse/potion room, I love that they show the links between potions and lotions, even down to Sally saying her husband liked her products so much he’d eat them! 🌺🥀🌹🌷💐🌻🌼🌸
I did wish that the film makers gave better translations to the spells. For example, young Sally's love spell 'Amas Veritas" translates to "I Love the Truth." The Spell the group used to banish Angelov is "Di te perdant te maledico" This could either be Italian or Latin. In Italian it translates to "I curse you perdant" In Latin it translates to "God Destroy You, I curse You" However Perdant is a Corsican/French word meaning to Lose, losing or Loser. So if you translate from Corsican it means "I curse you for losing" Personally I believe its a combination of all the translations I provided above to mean "God, Destroys you loser, I curse You." Also tossing salt over the left shoulder. There is a reason for this. There is an old belief that if you want to do negative workings, if you stand on your left foot, pointing your index finger of your left hand at a target, with right eye closed, you can curse your enemies. The left side (for right handed people) is considered to be the receptive side enegetically where as the right side (for right handed people) is considered projective. So if a curse is going to come your way, it comes through the left side of your body, into the left eye and then throughout the body. So throwing salt over the left shoulder puts a stop/creates a energetic barrier to prevent negative energies from attaching to you.
Great breakdown!! Fun fact: The house was made on Whidbey Island in the state of Washington specifically for the movie. They built it just for the facade and was torn down directly after the film concluded.
It wasn't a real house. It had only the kitchen and the sunroom/greenhouse. It was just the facade. Everything filmed in the house was filmed on a soundstage in Hollywood. It was pretty amazing to watch them build a house that looked hundreds of years old. Then tear it down and make the park look like nothing ever happened there. Not a blade of grass was out of place when they were gone.
This movie is my absolute favourite! I even have a tattoo that is a "visual representation" otlf that very famous quote. There's a scene that everyone seems to forget about. And it's when Gary says to Sally that he wished for her too. Now in the very beginning of the movie, before the aunts meddle with the love spell. Sally walks under a tree and the tree leaves fall on her and she looks back at it. That's the moment Gary wished for her too! And it's so easily missed and when someone told me I was like oh hey! How did I miss that!
Oh yes I do remember that scene. I actually cried when Gary said that to Sally. She actually teared up too. Even though she didn’t want to believe him but in her heart it was true. Also when Sally is leaving Gary’s after the talk she came rushing home. When she get home you can see Gary coming right after her like he knew she was in trouble or something didn’t seem right.
@@erin_storm1406he did know she was in trouble. Part of her spell was he will hear my call a mile away. She knew Gillian was in trouble and said no, no, no, he heard her.
I grew up Pagan, and this was one of my favorite movies. I’ll admit I was skeptical when I first saw your video pop up on my feed. A lot of people do surface level reads of things like this, and they get many things wrong. I was pleasantly surprised with the way that you broke everything down, and you got most everything right. I am in my mid-30s, and it is nice to see younger people who have an appreciation for the deeper aspects of the craft. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and I hope you inspire an entire new generation to walk down this path in perfect love and perfect trust.
I thought that too! It was his influence and that. It was fun at first and spectacular and beautiful and then bad and scary and terrifying and took her over. So it mirrored her experience with him. Great insight!
I've watched this movie for decades and just recently realized when Sally is running to Michael she is followed by a pack of barking dogs which is said to be a sign of Hecate. It's almost as if the Goddess herself was guiding her to him. ❤❤❤
I'm honestly still surprised that they haven't done a sequel. This novel and movie were both amazing, and everyone in the movie is still alive and still look amazing!
🌼🌷🌺 "My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue. It rather denotes a lack of courage."🌷🌼🌺 I am a Sally but it feels like my friends have more Gillian ways. Loved this video so much!! Thank you for doing this!!
🌻 Love the video. Practical Magic is a guilty pleasure of mine and like many other teens in the late 90's it fuelled a secret obsession and curiosity about the craft that I was not able to explore until I left my parents home. 🌻
My favourite line in the film is from one of the aunts (Stockard Channing ) as she is stirring a potion of some sort the steam of which she states “is good for the pores”. It kills me every time.
The black dog indeed must have been intentional. I’m basing this on not only your excellent observations, but the choice of song (yes, I was/am obsessed by both this movie and music!) “Black eyed dog” by Nick Drake is the song they played in that segment, and if you Google the lyrics, you’ll see how right you are!
This has been my comfort movie for years! Loved this video. It was the movie that made me want to practice witchcraft, and while I've never had the motivation to properly try I get the same urge every time I watch it. Just little things that can be added to everyday. 'Tis why Sally's my favourite, her positive reaction to the whip cream hack was so fun to me and made the idea of magic and witchcraft more accessible. 🌻🥀🌻🥀🌻🥀🌻🥀🌻🥀🌻🥀
I don't practice witchcraft, but I do enjoy learning the history of it. I love the movie Practical Magic, so thank you for sharing your knowledge behind the curtain. 🌷
Great video! This is one of my favorite movies 💜 you were mentioning kind of wondering about the midnight margaritas scene; I wanted to point out the tequila that the aunts used to make the margaritas was left on the porch (assumably by Jimmy’s spirit) so it makes sense that the entire scene was a bit wild energetically. It all began when they found the tainted tequila. Same brand of tequila Jimmy had been drinking in the car-ride kidnapping, the tequila that sally poisoned and ultimately led to his death. His energy was definitely in it, a hateful negative energy that led to the women all taking uncontrolled jabs at eachother.
@mayathebraveofkitwanga448 They were fine with it. My mom's side of the family are Spiritualists. My dad's mom wasn't so fine with it. She told my parents never to speak of my "gifts." We didn't take her advice. 😄
the line "there's a little witch in everyone" said by Aunt Jet is also iconic. i have a tea set from killstar that has that quote in the bottom of my cups. practical magic is one of my favorite movies. i actually saw it at the movie theater when it came out. i was pregnant with my oldest kid . she was born a week after this movie came out and i named her Rianna. a derivative of the Celtic goddess Rhiannon's name.
Practical Magick is by far one of the best movies ever made for the whole of witchcraft as a practitioner I truly believe this is an amazing film not to be missed (highly recommended)
I felt like Sally called those women because she really knew that they were secretly witches and that they were projecting. They finally realized that they could be who they truly were but, were to scared to admit.
This is one of my favourite films, thank you for doing this. I would like your take on the original series of Charmed (8 seasons so I appreciate that is a lot!) as I really liked your video on The Craft. Also the magic in Buffy the vampire slayer. 🌻
I. Can't. Believe. It! I've been practicing witchcraft since I was 13 years old, as does my mother and aunts and sisters, and this is one of my favorites movies ever! But I'm from Brazil, and never heard of the books before! I LOVE reading, I literally cried my eyes out in joy, paused the video and bought the entire box on Amazon! Thank you very much! ❤ Absolutely great video btw! ❤
HearthWitch, my daughter introduced me to this wonderful movie several years ago and I totally love it!. Every time it's on either Amazon Prime or UA-cam we both watch it together. I love the fact that you went through every scene of this movie with a fine tooth comb and thoroughly explained all the elements of magic presented in the movie--excellent job! Now after watching this video I will definitely go back and watch "Practical Magic" today again for the 5th time before Halloween. Also, I do agree, that Sally is also my favorite sister because she is "practical" (pun intended) in all intentions of everything she does in her life in the movie. However, Jilly (Nicole Kidman) does everything scatterbrained without thinking of the consequences of her actions (she just wants to have a good time) is the opposite of Sally (in a dualistic world it makes sense --yin and yang). In my opinion, all of the cast members in this movie did a phenomenal job in the presentation of the material, while adding humor along the way! It's definitely a must-watch film whether or not you practice witchcraft! After watching this video, I decided to pair your video with "Practical Magic" while watching it with either my daughter or some friends on Halloween. Great video, thank you so much!♥😃
I love Practical Magic, both the movie and the book. But this movie holds a special place in my heart as one of the foundations of my spiritual awakening. Also the family ties and dynamics are so similar to my own, it made me understand how much my grandmother thought me of her craft. Thank you for this lovely video. ❤ 🌺🌸🌼🌻
oh I LOVE Kim Novak and that film, her wardrobe, her apt, the whole NY scene, her aunt, brother, the crone witch...fantastic film...an absolute fave...I want to go to 'the Zodiac' club and hear bongos...'you just get your letters confused' re to bitch instead of witch haha , classic line
🪻🌻🌷🌺🌸🌼🪷💐🌹 A scene I particularly liked in the movie you haven’t talked about (because there’s so much to say there’s no way to talk about everything) is the one in which Gillian drives to see Sally yet she has disappeared the next morning ; I didn’t understand it the first time I saw it, and someone said « that’s a representation of astral projection, she wasn’t actually driving nor was she there physically with Sally » and it’s so subtle yet so well done I love it !
Speaking as a non pagan or witch, I found the depth of information in this video very interesting. Also interesting to me is how, belief, ritual etc are common to many belief systems. Belief and intent seem to be key in all of them to me.
I got my boyfriend to watch this movie with me and we loved it! My mom had it on dvd growing up and I would watch it alone in my room at night. I just love the love between sisters who grew up together! They get to share everything together💕🌷🪷🪻🪻🌷🌷
I love this movie! When the aunts are doing the love spell, they make the woman do the actual action. They provide her the elements, but she has to do the work. I really liked that. It shows how you have to be the one to work magic for yourself.
While I have not seen this movie (I'm not much of a tv/movie person), I am now curious to see it. I LOVE your breakdown and explanations, especially the lore. It sounds like the screenwriter did an excellent job of researching what witchcraft really is without the ridiculous "satanic panic" vibe. Thank you for yet another stellar video!
💐 Great video! I love the fact that you don't just review the film in a real witchcraft context, but use it as a full on teaching tool! Thank you so much again. I hope you had an amazing Halloween!
The film based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman, and there are more 3 books about the Owens which are Magic Lessons, The rules of magic and The book of Magic. I love all of them ❤ Sally is my fav
Practical Magic is one of my all time favorite movies & a Halloween must see movie in my house (actually, it's a year round must see movie). As someone with a sister, I love how Sandra Bullock& Nicole Kidman (& even the aunts) bicker like actual sisters. I have a little of both Sally & Gillian in me, with a wee bit of Aunt Jett & a huge dose of Aunt Francis! It's based on the book by Alice Hoffman, who has written other "prequel" books about the Owens family - one about the aunts, Jett (Brigette) & Francis when they were young & one about Maria's origin story. I highly recommend that everyone give them a read. I love that you did this video. I also noticed some of the extra little bits that made the movie feel more authentic.
I absolutely loved this video. Practical magic has been my favourite film since it first came out in the nineties. I had never dwelt on the significance of the black dog before! Sally is definitely my favourite. As someone who became a pagan witch in the nineties I completely relate to wanting to distance myself from satanists and still do. A friend once considered calling social services when she discovered what I was as she was worried my daughter must be in danger!Noson Calan Gaeaf Hapus from Wales🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼
I'm very sorry that you had to fear losing your child because people are so ill-informed! Maybe you already knew this, but in recent years, a new organization has popped up called the Satanic Temple. It's different from the Church of Satan and other Satanic groups, because it's not about worshiping Satan at all. Its tenets are about individual autonomy and compassion for others. It sprang up as a reaction to the tyranny some Christians want to inflict on others in the US. Satan, for this group, is a symbol of challenging the status quo and protecting individuals from mob rule. So, if you look it up, agree with its core tenets, and feel safe enough, you can always tell people, "Yes, I am a Satanist." And hand them a Satanic Temple card.
I've been a practicing witch since the 1990s and when this movie came out it became a family favorite! It's so wonderful to see positive representation! Great video! 💜💜💜🌹🌼🌷
Really enjoyed that, it was especially fascinating as I haven't seen the film yet. I'll have to get hold of it. Thank you, Hearth. Flowers coming up. :) 🌸🏵🌺🌷💐🌷🌺🏵🌸
I love this movie. It's one of the very few ones I actually have. I've also read the book which is very different, but they are both great stories. I did want to point out that is wasn't only women that bullied them growing up. The two women from Sally's shop came too. And those two seemed very supportive, possibly even practitioners themselves. I liked how the one woman called another and said something along the lines of, "great news. Sally just came out." Though yes it was mostly women that gave them trouble and I imagine that would muck up the magic. But it was a good thematic choice with several of the other things that happened in the movie and the resolution. 💐
I've seen this movie and read the book (both) and I find them to be quite different tonally while still sharing certain key character traits and plot points in common. In a switch from how it normally is for me, I actually prefer the Practical Magic movie to the Practical Magic book, but they're both worth spending time with. I also enjoyed spending time with your video essay since this film is one of my fall favorites. As you so nicely and thoroughly discussed, the witchy magic vibes are on point and the Owen's house is very nearly my dream house -- the whole movie gives me cozy autumn satisfaction. Thank you and here's a fall flower emoji for you 🌻 (no heart necessary 🙂). BTW: I've always understood the importance of the inclusion of the hostile women in the final battle as being to emphasize that women (or people in general) can have bigger enemies in common they need to band together to fight rather than wasting their time with the petty bickering and jealousies that can separate them from others who are more like them than not. Not all of the women called showed up, so I'd like to think the ones who did learned this important life lesson.
🌹🥀🧙♀️🥀🌹 I noticed in the live stream that someone mentioned the good witch, and I would just like to say that the good witch movies are likely my most favorite movies to watch! And it would be lovely to hear your reactions to the movies if you find them suitable for one of these kinds of reviews!!
@vg9616 what sort of magic were you looking for if I may inquire? I know it's not big in the Pazazz department in terms of ritual ceremonial and spellcraft aspects; but I find the magic that Cassie works is subtle, her cousin Abigail has a bit more flair in the spellcraft area, but Cassie always inspired me to turn my mundane life into something magical and with a dash of more meaning. I also just adore her archetype... (Sorry I'm a little biased.. I grew up watching them every autumn)
First time coming across your channel and very pleasantly impressed by your breakdown of the movie and learning so much more about the history of witchcraft and how it was portrayed in the movie. I should read the books, as this is one of my favorite movies since I was little. My sister and I would play our “Gilly and Sally roles” obviously not knowing what we were doing, but I can watch it over and over again, just to look at that house alone. Honestly incredible. Thank you for the breakdown and I’ll be checking out more of your content!
Absolutely love this movie! I have a super strong Sally vibe, I even craft soaps and lotions. Now, as i get older, i just want to be the aunts. 🪻🪻🪻🧙♀️🧙♀️🧙♀️
🍁🌻🌻🍂🕸🧙♀️ I love Practical Magic! I also noticed that the sisters pronounced Hekate incorrectly and I was happy that they gave true respect during the making of a movie❤
One of my fave’s!!! I’ve watched Practical Magic a million times!! Totally agree, someone really did their homework regarding Witchcraft!! Loved and enjoyed your video very much!! Blessings 🖤🌻🖤🌻🖤🌻
🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺 This is my favorite witchy movie, too. I’m so glad to hear all your insights into the real life aspects of the story and how it was presented. Keep up the good work, Dear Hearth! ✨💖✨
I live in the deep Deep South, lower Alabama, in The Bible Belt and witches and most things magical or just non Christian are actively feared. That is why I am a solitary, in the broom closet practitioner.
I am not one for emojis, and I am sure there would be none of the flower I would choose, which would be the tiny amazing flower of the spanish moss plant. I think, after watching this, that it suits. For another in this series, might I suggest Chocolat? It's magic is subtle, but strong. Lastly, it is nice to see someone talking about the craft as a craft and not one more of those online bookstore witches surrounded by the timeless wisdom of an occult section and lucite crystals. It is rare to stumble across someone who even appears to see the world-that-is, and I suspect that this is an artifact of my Samhain workings which bent themselves very hearthward this year. I hope the wheel turned well for you this year, and that your gods know you as well as you know them.
Love this movie! A favorite for sure! 💜 i do love the aunts! Witches of Eastwick was a great movie too and the show Witches of East End was great too. It was based off the books by Melissa De La Cruz. Unfortunatly, they cancelles the show before it could end. Thank you again for a great video! Love watching you, Hearth! 💜
🌸🌸🌸 Thank you for this in-depth analysis! I love how knowledgeable and conscientious you are on these subjects, it's really a joy listening to your videos 'cause not only are they soothing, people can actually learn a lot! For a witch who's fallen out of her practice due to health issues, I must say that just watching these types of videos inspire me so much and are starting to rekindle that spark for practice so I hope I'll be able to continue soon! Much love and appreciation from a slavic pagan witch to you ♥
Dear Hearth, First let me say, I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! You’re the best! Thank you for sharing honest unbiased factual information about the Craft! You’re a bright light in a sea of REALLY BAD, silly, ridiculous, and sometimes dangerous Witchy Woo-woo!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Next as someone who always felt from an early age spiritually different and Witchy. Added to the fact I am 6’8”/275lbs/Multi-racial/look like an American Football Player but went on for a Jurist Doctorate/and is Gay… basically an amalgamation of disparate stereotype! 🤪🤪🤪 And has been a practicing Witch since I was 17. First as a Wiccan, and now an Eclectic form of Traditional Witchcraft. This movie has been my “Jam” for years! I like you and almost every Practitioner I have ever met from every Tradition loves this movie. I have seen it about 4 times so far this year. And will undoubtedly watch it again a few more times before the end of the year! In fact if I meet a guy I seriously want to date and include in my life. And it comes time to “Come Out” of the Broom Closet with him… or even a new friend. I will just cook a nice meal (with intent on communication & understanding); plop them down in front of the television to watch “Practical Magic” in a movie night situation. And then afterwards explain that this is a MOVIE! I can’t resurrect the dead! But pretty much… THIS IS ME! (I like you am VERY “Sally!”) And then ask, “Any questions?!” 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️ This always opens up a great and often fascinating dialogue & discussion. And either proves this is someone I want in my life… or “you know where the door is… please use it. NOW!” So once again. Thank you for all of your videos. And a great review of one of my favorite movies! 🌑🧙🏽♂️🕯️✨🧹🐈⬛🌕
🌹This was such a wonderful video. I've been dying to see someone go through this film (honestly any witchy film) from a witchy perspective, and this was so comprehensive ❤️ Thank you!
My Mother went to Yugoslavia, right before she Conceived me, I lean on this for understanding my focus on the Easter World. Perhaps it's related to the location of the moon or stars. She went from Medugorje apparitions to a Harvard reunion... I'm so appreciative. However I feel terribly uncomfortable in the US. Learning Cyrillic Language has realy helped clear confusion and restored self worth.
I would think so in the movie but she wasn’t pregnant in the book when she cast the spell/curse. She did it at the place where she was supposed to be hanged and her daughter was already 6 years old at that time. The movie makers have changed it a lot but I love it anyway❤️. I highly recommend reading all of the books, there’s so much more of real witchcraft and interesting history facts as well😊.
💐 I waited on watching this review because I hadn't had the opportunity to watch the movie but I finally saw it yesterday and I loved it! It felt so realistic to actual witchcraft that its now become one of my favorite movies. Thank you for for the review! Absolutely loved hearing all of your takes on the movie. 💐
This is one of our favourite movies. “A little mugwort will fix that right up” has become a catch phrase in our household. “Di te perdant te maledico.” is Latin for “God destroy you, I curse you.”
I have been told by many of old Hispanic lady wile I was growing up that I should never knit or crochet when I'm thinking bad things or overly upset because I'll weave all that in. That I should only think good thing, blessing, even pray wile working on my project. Especially if it's a baby or wedding gift.
I am a nurse and I frequently deal with death. I have seen this beetle time and time again before my patients die. This has repeated in differnt places, in old and new builds. Loved this video and love Practical Magic. Suspiria (2018) is one of my favourite movies of all time and it's about witches so if you haven't watched it already, I highly recommend doing so! Maybe you'll be inspired to make a video about it, I'd be curious to see what you think of it. :)
PLEASE read the series of practical magic because it delves into Maria’s story and is so good. You follow the Owens family through multiple generations and is actually just different enough from the movie to keep it interesting. I highly recommend audible because the actress absolutely brings it to life.
Yes, the tetralogy is "Magic Lessons" (Maria's story), "Rules of Magic" (Frannie, Jet, and their brother Vincent), "Practical Magic" (Sally and Gillian), and "The Book of Magic" (the entire Owens family). 🧙♀🧙♀🧙♀🧙♀🧙♀🧙♂🧙♀🧙♀🧙♀
🌹Thank you for your thoughtful analysis. One of the things I've always loved about Practical Magic is all the real magical practices they included in it.
I think the line “There’s a little witch in all of us” is an important factor in the participation of the townswomen in the exorcism. They bullied Sally because they were alienated from their own inner-magic. When they got to participate as a community in spellwork, it not only healed the sisters & dispelled the curse, it healed the rift in the community as well.
I read the book, and the story of the woman who had the sisters cast a love spell against their better advice is a large part of the story, and of why Sally hates the idea of falling in love so much. The book really is a great read.
🌸 Great overview of the movie. I’ve loved this movie since I was a teen and seen it many times but learned so much from your video. Thanks for all the great info and insight. 🖤
I really loved this video! I never noticed the black dog.... Of course! The book is really good, highly recommend reading it. I would love to see you do a video on the witchcraft of "Bell, Book, and Candle" with Jimmy Stewart and the perfectly witchy Kim Novak!!
🌻🌹💐🌺 Practical Magic is my favorite! 🌺💐🌹🌻 Loved this video. You've pointed out some things that I hadn't noticed before! I've seen this movie sooo many times. I loved how young Sally's spell works on even herself later in life, when she admits I can't lie to him. ❤
I love this movie and I didn’t even notice some of those omens you pointed out. I’m very new at researching witchcraft before I start practicing so I do like your channel. 🌸🌺🌷🌻 growing up I definitely identified with Jillian more but now that I’m grown and a mom I do feel more like Sally.

I'm definately Aunt Jet
"Be careful of what you wish for"
@@MokiefraggleI still use that general idea whenever I get accused of devil worship (which thankfully hasn't happened in years).
Fair response with greater nuance@@freddyfaerie3499
@@freddyfaerie3499
You're right, those asks are absurd. If she threatened a curse either way, she's an awful Witch. Yuck. That story either way taints the film a bit for me.
@@potatopirate5557 it doesn't taint the film for me it taints her. She also didn't threaten to curse the film she cursed it to extort more money after she had already been paid
I adore the book series by Alice Hoffman soooo much. My favorite part is the song that was repeated over and over again throughout the series.
I always thought it was because she was 'in heat'
@@MotherNaturesEdge there's no reason at all that it can't be both those things! 😺
@@gabrieladerre2862 Absolutely. I love the idea of the dog symbolizing her beginning her journey as the fool. I would have never recognized that myself. It's a beautiful perspective
I thought it was the Grim, a harbinger of death?
@@seabreeze4559 No, he shows up later on. Im referring to the first dog that follows her.
Love this movie too! I always thought that her spell became a generational curse wasn't just that she was so distraught but she was also pregnant. When she cast the spell upon herself she also cast it on her child or her unborn children. We often don't think of future consequences in the heat of the moment.
I was just coming here to say this. I always thought the same.
Yes I think so too… but they did it sooooo subtly
Something you may have missed or not know, forgive me if you do--- "He will hear my call a mile away"...In the scene where Sally realises something is wrong with Gilly, she cries "No, no, no" and rushes to the house...Gary hears Sally's distrest call (intuitively), knows something is wrong, hence why he suddenly rushes to the attic. 🌔🖤
Whay about the one green eye and one eye blue ?..In the hotel room scene ..after Gary and Sally share a passionate kiss
Sally gets a close look at Gary's eyes and reminded of her botched anti love spell ( Amas Veritas) that she casted as a child
Practical Magic is my absolutely favorite witch movie too! I'm so happy to see younger generations appreciating this fun film.
Sally “I’m not a witch”
People “But I just saw…”
Sally “I AM NOT A WITCH!”
Now put together a whole town that believes she’s a witch and her practically calling them out for their lack of intelligence. Heck even her employee complained that she just needed to admit it already because she was fooling no one.
Women have a way of pulling together when it's least expected and most needed.
The Aunts are by far my favorite characters. I wish they had a movie with those two ladies.

Would the angel be on your left side ,when one is left handed ?
The book and the movies are very different but both great. One scene that I wish they had included in the film was the outcome of the love spell at the beginning. He grows so obsessed that he literally won't leave her alone so she returns to have the spell undone, but the aunts ignore her. I just think it would help illustrate why you have to "be careful what you wish for. "
Right. Never summon anything you can't banish.
I always wondered what happened to that woman in the movie!
I just couldn’t “get into “ the book..but I do remember that the spell definitely “worked “ by her husband being obsessed with her..
🌺🥀🌹🌷💐🌻🌼🌸
The house is definitely epic, however sadly the shell was built for the movie, and later dismantled.
I did wish that the film makers gave better translations to the spells.
For example, young Sally's love spell 'Amas Veritas" translates to "I Love the Truth."
The Spell the group used to banish Angelov is "Di te perdant te maledico"
This could either be Italian or Latin.
In Italian it translates to "I curse you perdant"
In Latin it translates to "God Destroy You, I curse You"
However Perdant is a Corsican/French word meaning to Lose, losing or Loser.
So if you translate from Corsican it means "I curse you for losing"
Personally I believe its a combination of all the translations I provided above to mean "God, Destroys you loser, I curse You."
Also tossing salt over the left shoulder.
The town was staged on Whidbey. The house was built at San Juan County Park, San Juan Island. I was Sandra Bullock's stand-in and lived on the island.
Oh that makes me sad to learn they tore down the house! 😢

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and I hope you inspire an entire new generation to walk down this path in perfect love and perfect trust.
I think the high energy of the margarita dance was from the spirit of what’s his name. Jilian’s relationship was fun at first then became terrifying.

People who are still in the broom closet can practice, but it's so great to have an altar out in the open and take over space for a circle.

His energy was definitely in it, a hateful negative energy that led to the women all taking uncontrolled jabs at eachother.
the absolute best thing about the movie is that house

I felt like Sally called those women because she really knew that they were secretly witches and that they were projecting. They finally realized that they could be who they truly were but, were to scared to admit.

Bright blessings! There are so many sweet ways to include the witchlets in things.
Absolutely. She is now 20 and had a childhood for of cosy seasonal celebrations and enchantment x@@jturtle5318
I've been a practicing witch since the 1990s and when this movie came out it became a family favorite! It's so wonderful to see positive representation! Great video! 💜💜💜🌹🌼🌷
Yes! I've waiting for this vid. I loveee this movie 🖤
Really enjoyed that, it was especially fascinating as I haven't seen the film yet. I'll have to get hold of it. Thank you, Hearth. Flowers coming up. :)
🌸🏵🌺🌷💐🌷🌺🏵🌸
I love this movie. It's one of the very few ones I actually have. I've also read the book which is very different, but they are both great stories. I did want to point out that is wasn't only women that bullied them growing up. The two women from Sally's shop came too. And those two seemed very supportive, possibly even practitioners themselves. I liked how the one woman called another and said something along the lines of, "great news. Sally just came out." Though yes it was mostly women that gave them trouble and I imagine that would muck up the magic. But it was a good thematic choice with several of the other things that happened in the movie and the resolution. 💐
I think the blonde is definitely a practitioner. Maybe she just dabbles, but I definitely think that she is in that direction of being a Witch..
I do love Practical Magic but the Good Witch has my heart! Movies and series were great :)
The Good Witch is my absolute favourite. The movie and the TV show ❤
I turn on the series when I just want something wholesome in the background to work to. I adore Cassie and see her as archetypal role model 👸🏻
I tried watching the Good Witch because I’m obsessed with all things magical, but that show is boring. She never does magic!
Great video, Hearth! I love this series. Would love to see an episode on the show Supernatural, particularly their witch-focused episodes 🌸🌸
One of my fave’s!!! I’ve watched Practical Magic a million times!! Totally agree, someone really did their homework regarding Witchcraft!! Loved and enjoyed your video very much!! Blessings 🖤🌻🖤🌻🖤🌻
🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺
This is my favorite witchy movie, too. I’m so glad to hear all your insights into the real life aspects of the story and how it was presented. Keep up the good work, Dear Hearth! ✨💖✨
I can’t believe it’s been 25 years! I love it and I own the DVD and soundtrack
Much love and appreciation from a slavic pagan witch to you ♥
Dear Hearth,
First let me say, I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! You’re the best! Thank you for sharing honest unbiased factual information about the Craft! You’re a bright light in a sea of REALLY BAD, silly, ridiculous, and sometimes dangerous Witchy Woo-woo!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Next as someone who always felt from an early age spiritually different and Witchy.
(I like you am VERY “Sally!”) And then ask, “Any questions?!” 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
This always opens up a great and often fascinating dialogue & discussion. And either proves this is someone I want in my life… or “you know where the door is… please use it. NOW!”
So once again.
Do you think that the fact that she was pregnant at the time she cast her spell also lent to the spell becoming a generational curse?
It could certainly have played a role, inadvertently linking it to not just her but also her children.
This was wonderful! It really tied my witchy learning in with the movie. You’ve made me want to watch it again. Thank you!
🌸 🌺 🌹 💐
Hi Hearth, i love your rendition of Practical Magic. Have you thought about doing one on Hocus Pocus too about the Sanderson Sisters? ❤
You’ve given such a beautiful in-depth breakdown of one of my most favorite movies …. Thank you for your work! 🌟
I am a nurse and I frequently deal with death. I have seen this beetle time and time again before my patients die. This has repeated in differnt places, in old and new builds. I have several theories.....one being that there might be something to do with the smells/hormones or reactions that take place in the body when someone dies/is dying attracts them....OR they are there specifically for me as a helpful hint from the universe as I recognise them as a correspondence so its a good way to get me attention....I of course lean more towards some scientific reason as I'm quite sceptical for a witch but I've always wondered what it is? X
We throw salt over our left shoulder for a reason.
Body language is literal.
When referring to the past we lean our head left.
When referring to the future we lean and nod to our forward right.
Love you and your content dearest Hearth ^•,•^
Love from an old hedge witch )0(
Loved this video and love Practical Magic.
Suspiria (2018) is one of my favourite movies of all time and it's about witches so if you haven't watched it already, I highly recommend doing so! Maybe you'll be inspired to make a video about it, I'd be curious to see what you think of it. :)
This really makes me want to revisit this movie! Thanks!
PLEASE read the series of practical magic because it delves into Maria’s story and is so good. You follow the Owens family through multiple generations and is actually just different enough from the movie to keep it interesting.
I highly recommend audible because the actress absolutely brings it to life.
I didn't know it was a series. To the library!!
Which actress reads it
Yes, the tetralogy is "Magic Lessons" (Maria's story), "Rules of Magic" (Frannie, Jet, and their brother Vincent), "Practical Magic" (Sally and Gillian), and "The Book of Magic" (the entire Owens family).
The scene talking about his star is my favorite scene. Definitely one of my favorite movies.
🌸🌸🌻
💐 🌹 🌸 🏵 🌼 💐 😅
Practical Magic is my favorite movie. The Craft is a very close second
I read the book, and the story of the woman who had the sisters cast a love spell against their better advice is a large part of the story, and of why Sally hates the idea of falling in love so much. The book really is a great read.
Loved this movie and awesome to hear someone practicing this craft speak on it! It’s absolutely awesome insight. Thank you!
Saw this movie at the theater when it was released and fell deeply in love with it. Thank you for breaking it down so completely in depth. Love it 💜
🌸 Great overview of the movie.
