    Just a reminder, this is not a Flat Earth Theory episode, the title makes that as clear as it can be, what with 'megastructure' and the plural 'Earths' :) We don't actually need tons of comments bemoaning the Flat Earth theory or how silly it is, remember this is SFIA, nobody here subscribes to that concept, anyone who shows up claiming to be is either a lying troll seeking attention or has a learning disability, arguing with them or mocking them serves no good end.

      We knew this was going to be covered eventually, and it was on the schedule. I was looking forward to this, because any scientific breakdown of how to actually build a flat earth just highlights how fallacious the idea that Earth is itself flat. For example, we'd be able to see those giant mass pipes with seismological returns. We could also successfully do the "Laser" experiment, and have direct laser based communication from Hamilton (New Zealand) to Jaén (Spain).

      If the Turtle was a station/ship and and the Elephants were part of an active support system or some such. Then I'd say we could build a Disc World. The only reason to build one would be as aa Tourist attraction or out of a sense of the ridiculous, I would think.
      It's like deciding to build a Death Star. Do we need one? Nope. Would we build one if we had the spare cash? LOL, someone would. Forgetting the heat or recoil problems, we did find a... plasma something or other that allows beams to be combined... So you can tell the Emperor that the Death Star superlaser research is on track!

    I've noticed a number of comments referencing the traditional flat earth conspiracy. Personally, I don't believe in the flat earth conspiracy. I'm not just saying that the Earth isn't flat, but that the modern, technological people who truly believe the earth is flat aren't real either. I suspect the majority of those who claim to believe in a flat earth are just trolling and hoping for a reaction. Or possibly it is a conspiracy of people who need a persistent straw man so they create the myth of true believers in a flat earth; I will call this hypothesis the flat earth conspiracy conspiracy.

    Maybe lamp-like bio-luminescent plants that draw energy from a thermal vent like artificial structure. this would also cause the ocean "floor" to be the highly lit part and the "deep sea" would be low to no gravity in the center of the cylinder.

Then again I suspect if we were building vacation resorts that way there would probably be demand for others with different climate conditions, Alpine resort world and such. After all if you have literally trillions of people living and working in the inner solar system you probably do have billions of people that would love to go skiing on holiday and such.

Hell even I am in that boat despite being a technophile and generally materialist in my world view I still don't feel that I understand the nature of consciousness enough to bet my life on the idea that it can be copied without disruption. That said I'd probably be more open to the idea of trying it if my organic body was about to become an untenable host in the immediate future suddenly something that seems more like a coinflip chance of it still being you alive at the end of it sounds a lot more attractive than near certainty of death given the choice.
      Sure it's likely that even in the absence of an actual solution to the problem of other minds sufficient to develop an experiment to actually prove persistence of consciousness such opinions would start to fall into an ever dwindling minority viewpoint as more and more generations start to grow up with mind uploading etc as a normal part of everyday life, hell wouldn't be the first major life affecting belief humans have adopted on mass through blind faith and being raised to believe the thing but it is going to be difficult to convince those that require some convincing scientific evidence for the persistence of consciousness upon copying to bet their life on such systems especially as both scientists and philosophers have been stumped by fundamental problems like objectively proving that the internal experiences of other minds even exist let alone proving that they continue as the same person after you copy them and terminate the original.

      @seraphina985 5 років тому

      @@AelundTwitch Yeah for me it's not so much the philosophy that is the issue but more the question of what I personally would experience upon stepping into that machine, I am just not in any particular hurry to experience death first hand to me it's like a near infinite loss of other potential experiences in exchange for just one. As I say I would be more open to something like using a device to back up my mind every night while I sleep or something that would spin up if something happened to me, the payoff matrix is kinda different then you either wake up with up to a day worth of amnesia and win a second chance at life for the price of a few hours of memories (Hell I've had that happen without any mind uploading well except for the second chance part, it's called a heavy night drinking lol) or you remain dead and someone else wakes up thinking they are you but you never know about it at which point it wouldn't exactly affect you anymore.

      Provided that you can engineer a solution strong enough to support the empty space, that's actually one way to achieve constant surface gravity. If you curved it on the inside so that the majority of the empty space was towards the center (basically an ellipsoid void), you could accomplish such gravitational consistency, though you'd probably want a central beam that ran perpendicular to the flat side not only for support against collapse, but also to hold it together and prevent too much outward bulge.

      @@musaran2 Yes we can.The Rocks are build up of visible Crystals, each with a proper crystalline latice and everything. You know how Marble often has swirl like forms and patterns? They are swirls. Because the stuff did flow - just in solid phase. We are also talking about flow in a very very slow manner here. It is not pasty at all. If we where able to drill a Tunnel down there without internal cladding so you could touch the stuff it would be just as hard as surface rock. It is just all the pressure from all sides keeping any form of fissure from opening, and thus prohibiting brittle Deformation.

      @@Levora You didn't really find anything to complain about, you're just being pedantic and didn't want to accept that Issac was making a little side comment that most people have probably forgotten about already.

    Build a tower on the "North pole", dial down gravity in that location to build high enough to use the tower as a light house. Sun and Moon on that tower. On for the other side as well. You only need light. It doesn't have to perfectly emulate nature.
