In sort of a tangent to the discussion about cost, I often find myself (even decades later) bound by childhood thoughts about budget -- a game should give me *this* many hours for *this* amount of money... It's a mindset I've spent my whole adult life working on breaking, because it is, at the very least, incredibly reductive to value a game based solely on the number of hours it fills.
Very much enjoyed the video; it's good to be reminded every so often that not only is it a huge mistake to always go looking for BIG games that eat weeks, but also that there are so many insanely high value experiences to be had for very low cost as long as I am willing to continue forcing myself to invest my attention in things that I know are short.

You struck a great balance with The Exit 8! Just enough to get me to try something I'd never normally look at without lessening the experience. Funnily enough that's a very similar quality to the game itself with those brief, abstract instructions.

Love videos like this, love learning about games I've never heard of. Picked up The Exit 8 :)

Love this collection; many of these id heard about or seen small bits of before, but plenty of others I hadn't (and I probably have my ear closer to the ground on the Indy scene than the average person).
Really loving the work, as always!

Static Canvas is rapidly becoming my favourite video game essay channel on the platform. You've got a great voice for it and some really insightful perspectives. Great video as always!

Its outside the price range of these and above the indie level but 3d realms (the people who made duke nukem) has a series going unnoticed right now. In 2016 they made bombshell, a top down shooter with lots of campy dialogue and over the top action. not long ago they finished the first prequel that is made in the build engine and is a beauty. Its incredible how well they know the engine and they pushed it to its limits making ion fury. What im really excited for tho is "Phantom Fury" its got a retro build engine style but its completely new it looks almost like voxels at times. Watch the trailer youll cream.

I can see u are a man of passion first, u mentioned u graduated in political science, not a very common course, but I am pretty sure it is a course that offers a very wide view of the innards of society, and I can see u using that view to explain the dynamics of indies of indies, or the purchase habits of most, I even dare to say that u studies mechanics of choice of our ape brain.
Otok, as u said, simulate the growth of a community organically, although the architecture used isnt organic (blocks) u can see that the organic comes from the interaction of each building with other, as it is with people in a community.
It comes in waves made me interested in searching more about games that I normally would play, emulated, but in a sense of playing old games, more of searching games prove that not everything have been tried during the PS1 era, a sort of modern classics.
I am not convinced about the Pony Island genre yet, and I would avoid streesful experiences in the near future ( I am talking to you Mosa Lina!😅), but its sure sonething I would try in the up fall months of 2024.
Its is just amazing how people say that games are expensive, while they get a tray of choice every sale, cant touch there backlog, I in the other side of the specter u have devs who agree with the said sale and complain about Valve cut (70/30), I think games are very cheap, the cheapest since the birth of this hobby, and we are heading to a state of over crouwded market, where it will be harder and harder to turn a buck even for the good games, it will probably collapse and we will observe a post crysis period that I cant even imagine how it will be.
