Just 2-3 months ago, I purchased a Mazda MX3 with a V6 engine. It's a true pleasure to drive such a motor that revs up very quickly and sounds amazing.
My MX3, affectionately called "the dinner roll" was THE BEST at getting through heavy snow. The higher torque at lower RPMs coupled with the FWD, I cannot tell you how many 4x4s and SUVs I saw stuck at the side of the road while me & dinner roll just cruised right past them. I really miss that car.
I'm from AK my first car was that sweet white base model. Got me places 4inch lifted trucks didn't go and never let me down! I currently own two! Mx-3 forever!
Great video. I've owned an MX-3 for almost 30 years. It was my first car in high school and I still have that car, plus another MX-3 that I bought last year to build as a track day car. Back in the day the K8 was decently faster than almost any other econo coupe. You earned by sub. I hope your other videos are as good as this one.
If they had thrown in the lantis R 2.0 litre and LSD with slightly stiffer away bars, I’m sure this car would have dominated the market. It was purposely neutered so on paper it doesn’t sound as great but even the 1.8 motor with an exhaust has an amazingly frantic induction sound. Handling is surprisingly good and it achieved a .89 skid pad. With modern tires even in the 340 tread wear range, you could maintain close to 1G. Lift off the throttle and the rear rotates amazingly
I chose it out of a used parking lot, 1 yr old. Dad was delighted with the car and price. Fast forward to buying a 97 eclipse, he wouldnt lay off the sales guy for how much i suck at driving a stick. Well he ended up having to redo a lot of engine problems. I caused them. I drive like a maniac. Shoot me.
I just got one of these as my first car ever literally two days ago and i am soaking up all the info about the car like a sponge, such a cool car, a shame that it seems so easily forgotten
That’s awesome bro. I wonder where you was able to find an MX-3. There difficult to come across nowadays. I would definitely love to have one. Cool cars that much of the younger generation is completely unaware of.
I barely saw these cars back than my dad had a Mazda mx6 loved that car wish he never sold it u barely see these on the road even back than you didn't see em as much these videos are cool mane
brought a v6 model this year. it had an extensive rebuild in 2020. even by today's standards a great car to drive. mine has coil over and some other small mods. they are also appreciating in value. already had offers above what i paid for it. future classic ??
I've had 3. Currently driving the loudest with biggest wing if them all, once it had a 2.5L engine swapped in this car really moves and handles amazing, it's so light can be fun on payment and dirt roads. Get the manual. I dare you to find one with a working AC now 27 some years later. One draw back is the 1991-93 does not come with any cup holder. But it has a ashtray cig lighter and the stereo works great 👍
That's one car I've never liked. Thought it would grow on me eventually, but nope. Passed up buying one in the early 2000's. Great video. I've subed snd been binge watching
My first car was a 94 MX3 with the 4 banger and a manual tranny. Teal green with black interior. Had MX3 in teal green written on the black floor mats. That will always be my favorite car of all time!!
I had a 1993 Mazda MX3 with the v6. A really fun car to drive and though there were not many tuning/mod options for the car, I did have a custom short ram intake and catback exhaust, nology spark plug wires, and a so-called high performance distributor cap. I was young when I had it and my knowledge was lacking at the time so there were a few things I did that thinking back now, I realize they were very dumb. One, I cut the shifter thinking that’s all a short throw shifter was. However, the insanely expensive shifter knob was cool. I put 18” wheels on it, which were WAY too big for the platform and caused a few ride quality issues. Should’ve stuck with the wheels it came with. Mazdas take on the Porsche 944 phone dial wheel where perfect for the car and I should’ve stuck with those. Other than that, I did paint the emblems a few different colors during my ownership of it and messed around with vinyl on the tail lights to make them look like they had circled lights haha and gave the headlights eyebrows to achieve the look that so many hero wrangler owners are now going for. All and all the car was fun to drive and reliable. It was the first car I would put through some street racing and the little 1.8liter v6 would keep on ticking. Anyway great review and blast from the past.
There was enough tuning options, thanks to Probinator and DIY Autotune's PnP Megasquirt. Regardless, the 1.8L V6 didn't have much potential and was best to swap in a 2.5L. Even using the domestic engine, it still was amazing improvement that had great support thanks to the Probe community, including turbo kits, but also proved the transmission didn't like power over 350. If you had a 4cyl MX-3, the B6T ot BPT were swaps to go. There were a few turbo kits, even for the SOHC, but was short lived and hard to find not long after.
My first car was a white 1994 MX-3 with the 1.6. At the age of 16, I loved how I could bang the first 3 gears of an automatic with the use of the "HOLD" button on the shifter.
I bought my MX3 almost 4 years ago... Ofcourse with 1.8l V6. Never ever heard of this car before but now it is amazing piece of japanese culture for me. It is agile, fast and 90´ vibe is insane. I installed custom exhaust. The V6 sound is amazing. On idle or high RPM when she spits flames. Now she is few inches from ground and I have plans with her. Here is it rare. I saw more Supras and Skylines even RX7s then MX3s..... I was on the Biggest car meet in our country. 3500 cars on an airfield and only 1 MX3 and it was mine. This car is more than 4 wheels and metal for me. It was and it is my dream car. I always wanted car from japan and made in japan so it was good surprice when I found she was made in japan
Yes, the MX3s are a rare sight now. Definitely love the 90s vibe of those cars. I very seldom see any here in my state. Much of the younger generation don’t even know what an MX3 is haha.
My uncle bought a brand new MX-3 and loved it for about 7 minutes until the dealer pulled his brand new MX-6 around from the back of the lot where it wasn't seen before. Needless to say it was a major dickpunch for my uncle having instantly fallen in love with that beautiful black MX-6 and its unique spoiler. He never enjoyed the MX-3 after that and traded it not long after for you guessed it an MX-6 black 1995 year model. One year newer than the 1994 MX-3 he had just bought only a few months prior. Another funny note worth mentioning is he was so proud of that loaded 95 model until wouldn't you know it in 96 they came out with the beautiful M-Edition model and danm near made him cry lol. Years later having always loved his car i saved and scraped and finally got one of my own when i was 17 back in 2000. Mine was only a 93 of course but same body style and so beautiful with the spoiler and sunroof. That car had magical powers. I was a ghost as far as females were concerned with the hooptie i drove prior to that but after buying that MX-6 I became Brad Pitt over night. It was awesome i couldn't fight em off with a stick and even met my wife with that car. She's always been way outa my league but almost 20 years now im hoping im in the clear that she wont figure it out 😂
I own an MX3 and I used to sell the Eunos 30x here in Australia back in the day. My company drive car was an MX3 V6 and I helped set up the Eunos dealership in South Australia. i own an mazda mx3 1.6 B6E engine.... very nice car, very durable...handling is great!! no complains whats so ever, parts are getting harder by the day to come by
I had a UK spec 1.6 DOHC MX-3 in Ireland. There was also JDM Az-3 versions that were imported from Japan. Some had a very nippy 1.5 DOHC engine with over 120 HP. That engine ain't mentioned here. I also had the 323Fs both the BG and BA models. They were never sold in North America. But another interesting 5 door Coupe car from Mazda.
Ok thanks for sharing. Yeah the 1.5 didn’t get mentioned because I wanted to keep it mainly focused on the North American offerings. The BG/BA were also interesting.
I wonder why they didn’t use the MX-5 engine in FWD configuration as the optional engine in this car? Later Mazda Protege used the MX-5 engine in FWD configuration for the ES or sport version of the Protege.
I had the large r2.5 v6 in the probe ( mx6) and damn did you have to rev the crap out of it from 1 to 2nd gear cause low end torque was basically non-existent... I CANT IMAGINE. How gutless and slow from a dig this much smaller 1.8v6 was....but at the same time I know it sang high and hard at the higher end just like mine😅
Good video. I was always curious about this weird little cars. I enjoyed the info about the small displacement engine. Small displacement v6's are such a waste. Bad economy bad performance.
Perhaps, but they did help distinguish these from their competitors. Mazda got a lot of good press from this option, and it helped build that eventual "zoom-zoom" image....even though this V6 wasn't a clear performance advantage over the others in the market.
Honestly as long as your shifting well these cars get great mileage. Push them and ya high revs okay with the clutch, keep it as light as possible so half tank lol I got over 650kms a tank I think 45 l tank
