How easy is it to begin using and getting a good sound from?
In this video I show what's involved in using the Pickaso Bow (it's not a straightforward out-of-the-box playing experience) and demonstrate my struggle to get an easy beautiful sound. After a couple of days' practice I recorded a demo song at the end of the video.

I have one of these. You need a month or so of practice to get the hang of it. I think it's great. It's a bit tricky because it takes a guitarist time to apply violin-style technics. You have to be patient & work with it.

The best part of this is he doesn't realize all those "rituals" are the same thing you do to violin so it really has the essence of a violin and actually legit sounds like one, yes it does need more practice cause its like actually practicing an actual violin, but the results are pretty epic if you master it, but yeah it has limitations
he doesn't know much about violins, yes.
One of the biggest “limitations” is the fact that you can’t get it into too many strings (because it is so big), like a violin bow could. Also, violin bows can get in and you can generate a whole range of notes and sounds, because of the fact that there is no fretboard to split the notes down into (I read an article about this - as far as why violins do not have fretboards).

I plays guitar for year. My hands fly over the neck. I always violin no problem. But it’s way harder. Make noise

Sooooo after owning an ebow for years and a beautiful Martin accoustic guitar, it never dawned on me that the ebow would work on an accoustic. Mind=blown.
lol yeh someone else had to show me that too, it never occurred to me. Also, they showed me eBow+slide... If you like eBows, I've also looked at some other resonators on my channel

I appreciate the time you spent with this review. I thought it would be exactly like the experience you demonstrated. I see it as a tool to add a simple strings to tracks. Your composition helped sell me that I made the right decision to already buy one. Nice, intuitive playing and harmony building. Works for me! I also appreciate how a real bow allows fast striking, as opposed to the eboy's recognizab.le "toaster oven" way of striking, which is just a one-time thing each time you choose your note. Pickaso bow allows manic emotion into the performance, which for me really lends itself to bowing a guitar in unconventional ways with full rhythmic expression, at the minimum. At first I thought this thing was a total dud but after a bit of playing with it and like you said with some effects it really adds a lot of character especially paired with this Tonewood amp it sounds totally killer and leaves most players completely speechless.

But what if you are going for acoustic-only - no pick-ups?
I found that once I lubricated the strings, it immediately sounded better. I still get a bit of squeak depending on what part of the bow hits the strings, but sounds better.
Recommendations on string lubricants? Know I can google it but just curious what you think :)

Would fast fret do the trick?
I always wipe my guitar strings (and mandolin, etc.) with WD-40 on a rag after playing, because my fingers/hands get sweaty. I don't know if that counts as a lubricant, but it sure makes the strings last much longer.

You answered the questions I had, regarding switching strings. I like to do runs and jump intervals. Playing on just two strings wouldn't work for me. I like the sound produced, but I don't rely on sustains and airy melodies

Really honest and informative Video. Thank you. I used normal bows for an fair amount of time and Rosin is something that kills the high end of strings pretty fast and then it’s also sticky. It’s an interesting tool, but you have to know what you’re doing to the strings and the guitar and make a conscious choice. And you never get as versatile as an Cello or Violin Player cause you can’t reach more then a few strings.
Sigur Ros (a Postrock band) uses bows a lot and there’s a Rig rundown on UA-cam that honors the commitment they put into it. Very impressive but for a lot of players it would be easier to actually learn cello or violin.

There is a learning curve but I have found that it is a great chance to get good responses from the bow .you have got to see this your self .time shows what you can do
I think it's pretty cool actually. Ebows sound nothing like a real bow, where this thing actually does. But, is it supposed to be played down in the soundhole like that? Also, as far as the resin goes, I guess you'd never used a real bow before, haha. That's just how they work.
yep the violin is probably the hardest instrument at the entry level to not get a real screeching sound out of ... its so hard that they just sort of let the bow hand develop over time while focusing on fingering ; theres no real way to rush it and I was surprised ronin got a good sound nearly instantly. the key as i understand it is to drive the right hand harmonics so that the 7th overtone is suppressed, and then when you get really good at chording you can return and put the bow slightly askew to get some of those tones back for a more yiddish sound or even microtonal scale.
The cleaning is a thing for sure, pro violinists do the full set each time the instrument comes out and goes back in the case.
if you look at J Page for eg, when he used the full bow he always had an electric with a very high curve radius neck to avoid hitting too many strings, (even tho he sometimes used an SG, that particular model/year was higher curve radius) but he also relied on the natural suppression of less-driven strings that occurs with amplification.
very nice song and sound from the bow, to me despite your misgivings you pretty much proved immediately that it was a capable of real musical expression. i wouldnt compare it with ebow, apples n oranges. also the attack is much much better.
i think the 7th harmonics might be back a mm or two toward the bridge, drive it directly and it wont resonate, basically the same skills as right hand pick harmonics. bearing down and getting a long steady tone with barely noticeable changes (in the up/down) is a life long quest. ppl just sit there droning to perfect it.

@@janglestickThat is a great summary and very helpful. For a lot of us on a serious tone quest and always trying different things, this sort of tool is a serious response for sounds we chase in our heads. I think the fact that it requires some attention and care to effectively use prior to playing on the guitar speaks to its professional nature of the bow. Unlike the Ebow which is more of a gimmick to me. The fact that you can actually use this on a violin speaks volumes. I've seen a video of someone playing the violin with the pickaso bow BECAUSE it is a real bow. Not some cheesy gimmick tool that will get you close to a violin swell... like the ebow. Overall this is a brilliant device and I definitely will be purchasing one.
@@Dwight_K_Schrute yep i'd give it a shot too .. probably would need two guitars for a performance though given the rosin. Ronin seems to use a lot of sound textures I like, but I'm not sure exactly what is up with my preference. I used to think I could tell the difference between 44.1 / 16 and HD, but I'm not so sure anymore. I do know that I own a lot of modeling amps, Fender and Roland, and none of them sound as good to me as an older solid state amp, I'd rather play on an old Peavey than thru the new Fender stuff, something about the attack is slightly off, it just never crackles out the way an older open-back power wasting amp does, without even getting into tubes. Honestly I dont understand why anyone likes these new sounds. The best sound they ever get is sort of a sizzle and theyre all kinda the same. thanks for the comment I hope you find some sounds you like, ive gone back to my maxi mouse and crate limo.
@Demonic Sweaters It is indeed supposed to go into the soundhole - the videos on the Pickaso Bow website show it like that. I actually did try, out of curiosity, to play it across the strings, playing a full E chord, but couldn't seem to make that work.

I mean, I’ve seen demos of the Pickaso where they’ve obviously practiced a lot, they’re using reverb, & it sounds amazing. But in the meantime, you’ve sold me on the E Bow.

I just bought one. Only just heard about these. It's fairly obvious it's a tool for a very specific application that you couldn't use on everything. But then, so is an E-bow. It's going to be perfect for me, because I have a specific application in mind. I have an old song which is based around strings, but none of the virtual instruments I have sound quite right. So I'm going to use the Pickaso Bow to fill out and add dynamics to my virtual instruments. It's probably peculiar to this song, but I've had a hell of a time finding the right string sounds, because nothing quite fits. I'm hoping the Pickaso Bow will be the missing ingredient.

I think that probably makes the most sense - using it in recording to add a unique sound.
Good presentation! Thanks! Today heard first time about that guitar bow. Generally would be interested and play little bit Violine and Psaltery with horse-hair-bows. But have doubts that it is difficult to play. But I saw one Pisacko Presentation and they played only on one string. That was sounding good. Even with Violine it need for a beginner some time to achieve bearable or good sounds. Greetings from Germany!

For me, the sound of the violoncello is the singing and crying of the soul. You managed to get this effect in the composition you played, it turned out beautifully. This gadget is amazing, but it has to be a guitar plugged into electricity, it probably won't work out like that on ordinary acoustics. Greetings from Poland
I think it'd be hard to get this to work on electrics, because it's designed to bow perpendicular to the strings, into the sound hole, but I'd love to see someone experiment with it.
I’m pumped on getting my hands on one of these babies. If your not into violin or cellos for your music then it’s def not for you. I rented a cello for a year and the experimentation was my jam. This puts it together. Ebow doesn’t provide the bow sound. This helps individuals make music without having to bounce from a cello to a guitar in concert.

@@ronanconroy5282 I've learned to get really sweet flute sounds from the e bow. I get all kinds of sounds from it, of course, but I never go for trying to sound like a cello or whatever. Lately I've been working on an acoustic album of abstracted drugged out sounding new age music, mostly using acoustic and ebowed acoustic. It sounds like acoustic Brian Eno circa Music For Films or Another Green World's softer pieces, but acoustic. I love the ebow. You sounds good with it. I think most people never try to actually apply it while thinking of guitar techniques. It's weird. The main one seems to be that nobody EVER mutes when using it . Very strange disconnect between most players and thinking about the device. Good atmosphere in the song too btw

It needs the soundhole in order to allow you to insert the full length of the bow - on an electric you'd be trying to drag the bow across the strings and it'd be less accurate and effective probably.
I think I would prefer the ebow over the pickaso bow. At least I could still use the ebow on an electric guitar since there is no sound hole for the pickaso bow to operate in. Also, the pickaso bow is going to get rosin dust inside an acoustic guitar - very difficult to clean out.
I agree. Maybe I just don't have the patience to learn how to get consistently sweet sounds of of the Pickaso. Some people seem to love the thing...

How's rosin and guitar wood over time? There'd be a bit collected in there and the strings.
I haven't used it enough to really let it build up, mainly because it's such a production to use each time. Some people really love this time, others are less impressed, but the comments are so widely split!
Would it work with electric guitar, if there was a hole that goes through to the back?
I can't really think of too many electrics with a deep enough sound hole, to be honest

Pretty cool! I think I could get most of those bow like sounds for looping with a jellyfish pick, now a meletron pedal can enhance the bowing or even some delay a slide and a volume pedal. That said I'm most likely gonna buy one.

@@ronanconroy5282 Jellyfish pick was described as a chorus pick, it's main function is to sound similar to a 12 string guitar. For $10 it works pretty well, especially if you pick closer to the bridge. They work great for jam sessions and live looping situations (I like to do on loops with shorter bowing techniques although it can not really do longer bowing sounds). As well as well as for overlaying tracks for recording but I usually use a violin bow slide and a volume pedal for that stuff or even my melatron pedal!

I've actually made my own chorus picks out of worn picks and old guitar strings. A little different shape but sounds similar. Maybe I'll make a video

I’ve played “at” violin some anyone who has wouldn’t be surprised about the rosin and the dust left behind. For me the bow takes more technique and practice than the left hand, of course that could be from playing guitar for years before I ever tried violin but at least for me bowing is enough of a talent on a arched bridge made for it for this to ever be more than a novelty and maybe a recording tool for a few unusual tones.

It's also squeaking partly because you are arcing the bow as you go. It should be a smooth linear motion. I'm sure it will sound great with practice. I definitely want one

Maybe if you got a spare guitar, lose a string or 2 in-between each other and leave the high or low ones ore middle ones... Would make for easier transition from string to string... But overall, it makes the guitar sound more powerful.
I have seen demos where people use just a pen with resin. Alexandr Misko is a master of that technique, but then he plays at a master level.

Great honest video, not staged and honest assessment! We've all played a bow to emulate Page and then realize it's a guitar and not a violin or a cello. I was hoping this product would bridge that gap. It does a little bit, two squeaky strings at a time. Like yourself I prefer the Ebow even though that's limited to a single string you can still maneuver to the next string fairly quickly without losing the groove. I see a limited use unless you devote yourself too it. Reverb and a backing track helped but lets be honest it just covered up the inadequacies.

Ultimately this would be cool to use with all the pedals and accompiament for a song per set. Remember that these players aren’t playing loud, that could sink the ship.
You do realize that the guitar’s sound is nowhere close to being as high as a violin, so even if it did work, it still wouldn’t sound completely the same as a violin.
In addition, a violin has an f-hole, whereas the Pickaso bow works on acoustic guitars in which have a soundhole - and because of its size, it would be easier to get into an oval soundhole.
Therefore, you would also have the difference between the violin projecting through an f-hole vs. the guitar through the Pickaso bow, which projects through an oval soundhole - which I am not aware of any violin being built that way.
Good honest review. Some would have the patience and time for this. Not for me after seeing this video. Very interesting product for those that would commit to it and the maintenance involved.

The thing is, what if you only have an acoustic guitar - and no electric pick-up? How is the e-bow going to help?
The ebow actually can work pretty well on acoustic - try with a slide, for example. Not as great as electric, but definitely has an effect.
Was just gifted with one. Something very important for first time users to know is that it is not very compatible with coated strings like Elixirs. It will work with the 2nd and 1st string but will hardly produce any sound with the others (3-6) and will be very muffled and unusable in comparison to those strings. Checking out the getting started page again I'm now noticing that this is listed in the notes. It says that they are not very compatible and that they may require excessive amounts of rosin to work. Unfortunately both of my acoustics have Elixirs on them. 😢😒🤦♂️
So many strings are coated these days. Definitely means you have to have a specific guitar set aside, where you're not using coated, and you're happy to get rosin all over them
Very distinctly different tonal quality. The e-bow, is nowhere near sounding like a violin, but the Pickaso, brings some good stuff out that way. Check out different reviews. There are some fair criticisms, but I think it's another decent tool, depending on what sound you're looking for.
I still wouldn’t call it a “violin sound” because the violin has a higher range than a guitar to begin with… Maybe it’s closer to a viola, cello or double bass (I don’t know…)?
@@JJ_TheGreat actually it gives a good "string" sound, which (due to the guitars natura/extended range), can straddle parts of them all, even down to the Double-bass....one substantial drawback, is the difficulty of vibrato/glissando, due to the frets of the guitar; however, this problem can also be somewhat remedied, by a guitar with elevated action, whereby it is played like a "fretless"...all in all, it is really preferable to have a "spare" guitar to dedicate to it, if one wishes to use it much of the time....I think also, the authors piece reveals where the major strength of this product would be, in recording/fx-assisted tones.....
Having played violin for 30 yrs..I fully understand how to make this thang work.
Cleaning is fine..but not so much if you have a designated guitar you can abuse by not cleaning the rosin..it turns black but remains abrasive..and looks great after 20yrs playinI have seen many old fiddles with the black coating..great look..for only dispensable beaters that you will love for their abused look.. mmmm

Interesting. I guess the Picaso Bow is best for people who do have violin experience. Guitarists with no bowing experience might struggle more
I would love to see john frusciante or flea experiment with it.. your review is great too!! I think it's more for adding sound to complete pieces, not as a solo performance. Unless u play in open c and get that Celtic sound going

some of the cello and violin players have taken me to task a bit in the comments :D saying I just don't have the string instrument skills to really appreciate this bow - they're right, I don't :D but I agree with you too, for regular guitarists like me it's definitely more of an additive thing, a flavor

Can't you only do one string at a time with the ebow?
Yes, though I think the difference between the ebow and Pickaso in that respect is that with the Pickaso bow, as you draw the bow back and forth, you're inserting it into the soundhole and drawing it back out: when it's all the way inserted, it's tricky to quickly get it back out in order to move strings; whereas with the ebow, you're resting it on the selected string and you can more easily lift it slightly and move it across to another string. So with the ebow, changing strings is easier.

hey man you can play one or two string with the bow..and make tapping with 1 or 2 finers qithe left hand..mix left hand tapping and bow..and you will have more notes and textures...sounds great..try it my friend..have fun :)

When using the pick, try flipping it around so the bow is sticking out away from your hand, not tucked under.

I played with a violin bow 1 time after trying to clean the rosin off I said never again, I do use a ebow occasionally

yeh they're extremely different. I guess my initial thought on seeing the Pickaso Bow online was that the eBow is an electronic bow that vibrates the strings, so I wondered if a string bow would sound anyway similar.

It looks like a plectrum, not a pick, on one end. I think your criticism isn’t supported by any adventurism with your guitar. While it’s not like a regular little pick, seems like it could be handy. (Like any new-to-one gear: a learning curve.) I see you give further review, so this video also has merit, thanks!

Thanks! It seems people with legit violin bow experience seem to like it or at least have different expectations than us guitar players who are curious to try new sounds and new gear. For us, this is maybe a little less exciting, too time-intensive to become expert in, and comes with the downside (rosin etc.). But more than one violin player has tried to excoriate me in the comments :D))

Thanks for the review. Now I know its not something I want to mess with. I'll just learn to play the violin at some point if I feel the need to add real strings to my music. This product seems like a waste of time to me.

I don’t play violin, so I had no expectations. I wanted to know, as a guitarist who doesn’t play violin, what this product would be like and what the experience was like. And the target audience was mainly similar guitarists.
I accept this explanation. I okay both violin and guitar, so I feel I can comment with a little insight. Thanks for a great video, Ronan! I have ordered one because I am intrigued and will try it on my violin as well... Why not? 😊✌️

cool, good to know. Maybe I should keep one of my "lesser" guitars aside for the purpose, and I can use those strings and not worry so much about the rosin...

It's a huge mistake to compare an actual bow with an ebow. They are two completely different things. Learn some actual bowing techniques and then review the item.

That e-bow sounds awful. First time hearing it. The other bow sounds bad too but that’s a practice thing. I’ve heard people playing game of thrones with that thing and it’s amazing.
Ebow sounds worse. I guess you're right though...Picasso needs practice. Also the right hand will sound equally bad as the left plays.

I think the e-bow absolutely sounds like garbage but that's just my opinion 😂 this Pickaso bow however (with practice) can sound phenomenal
I love how divisive the pickaso is. I got some sounds I loved out of it, but fully see how it'd take real practice to master.

Well...if you KNEW anything about violin....which you obviously DONT, 😉 You'd realize that is how a fiddle is played! Since I play 11 instruments, including guitar and fiddle, hope this helps....keep practicing! Yeah...its called "musicianship" not "plug n play"

It doesn't make sense to compare the ebow and the pickaso. If you have never used a real bow in your life, learn it before recording a review.
I compare an electronic guitar bow to a non-electronic guitar bow. Makes sense to me. :) I don't anticipate I'll use a violin bow any time.
