Thank you so much!! I’m currently working on my lower register chromatic scales for an audition and I can never fully get anything below a low Eb-D to speak. They always kinda come out squawky and what not. Your advice was so helpful within getting them to finally speak and play!!
Low notes generally work on the bassoon I’m renting, though there are times when it may take a while for them to speak. Your airflow and vowel formation/open throat tips should make it possible for notes below the bass staff to speak more. Descending in steps should also solve the “speaking” problems. You’re correct when it comes to tuning low notes. I have generally found E2 to be sharp. To solve this matter, I would sometimes depress the second resonance key with the left pinky finger to make the sound darker. However, my coach would often ask me to readjust the embouchure; sure enough, embouchure adjustment improves the pitch. This has been yet another useful video. Thanks for sharing! (-:
Thanks for this video. Although I don't play bassoon I find these warmup execises useful to enhance my deep bass singing register. i practice till I reach A1 or G1, three ledger lines below the bass staff. I sing second bass in my church chior. The deepest note I sing in my church choir is C2. And there's a piece that has a lot of D2's in it. And liks the bassoon I find I have to practice to get my voice to "speak" at these low notes.
Omg this was so useful! Thank you for the wonderful video! So helpful because lots of my band pieces are in the lower register and I struggle to get them to speak consistently:)
Low D was created by the devil himself!!! I have to open EVERYTHING down to my toes to get it down to tune!!!!! I’m glad you brought that up.I though it was just me!!!! Hahahaha. Thanks for the video!
Nope, definitely not just you! Sometimes, I find it helpful to relax my shoulders, like you're breathing out a big sigh, and that motion can help bring the pitch down (mostly by releasing some of our tension and frustration with that note!)
Thank you Natalie, you are a breath of fresh air, and your tips and instruction are wonderful. Extremely helpful!
Thanks so much for your kind note Diane, I really appreciate that and am happy to know that I've helped out in some way!
Thank you so much now I sound way better. I’m in the six grade band and I sounded horrible until I came across this channel, now I sound way better
Your instructions are very helpful and clear. Thanks
Thank you! I’m glad to hear it!

The pinky resonance key is a must on that low E, I use it as well!
Great video, I am a 'self teaching' bassoon player and have found this very very useful...thank you !!
Same, good luck!
Awesome!!

It's a struggle we all have, but it does get better with practice and a good reed!
Ah, voicing! That is the one that did it for me. Thanks! They are still too sharp, though.
omg new videos!!! HII!!!
