I'm also Lao American. I can speak, read, and write in the Lao language perfectly because my parents teach me since I was in high school here in Seattle. Every time my parents go visit Laos, they buy Lao school books in Vientiane. The books teach me the Lao alphabet and how to write the Lao sentences.
Your reference to family structure @ timestamp 04:48 brought this to mind. Family ties build our identity. We are an individual leaf on a tree branch. Together, we are a family with a history. Going all the way back to the roots of our family tree.
I married a Lao woman and adopted her 4 children. The only time that they used Lao except talking with their mother and grandmother was when they didn't want Dad to know what they were saying. Savannakhet seems like a good city to live in. Not too big but big enough to have everything you need.
I think you would enjoy the UA-cam channels 'Now in Lao' and 'Neenee Lao Life.' They are done by an Australian man and his Lao wife. They travel all around Lao.
Day One in Laos!
