The timber is treated pine. I use H4 treated pine for anything in contact with the ground and H3 for anything outdoors. H3 and H4 timber don't require painting as they're already protected from rotting and termites etc.
Correct. Simmilar to a stirrup but you have to use a bit of creativity and common sense to get things to work. L shape brackets were the way to go on this particular job.

This is an awesome build. I need my deck to be really low to the ground...has anyone heard of tuffblocks? They look like they'd do the trick
Haven't heard of them but if they're affordable and have good installation instructions then go for it I say!
