  • I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Bunnahabhain distillery on Islay today. This is the peated Toiteach A Dhà. It's a NAS whisky and it's from the more affordable end of their range. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

    I just finished a bottle. Thank god! It’s the only Bunna I’ve had that really wasn’t a hit. Took 2 years to get rid of it. A low 80s and based on that experience, never again. So many better Bunnas out there

    Its not just you
    I had a couple of early batches of klingon bunna and they were borderline stunning and heavy!
    The last i tried was more muted and less thick and rich
    Like you i would rate the old one 87 and the newer ones 82

    I think I read somewhere that the name is derived from Romulan and not Klingon. The bottle design goes better with that hairdo.

    Just finished a recent bottle of tukytechatuk(spelling?), for limited availability, in my market, and 109 Canadian bux, its a pass for me. Got a signatory staoisha for around the same price and it kicks it out of the ball park. I know sports.

    It might not have anything to do with the Toiteach, which i like but don´t like it enough to talk about it at length, it has to do with your favourite topic klingon language and it´s pronouncation.
    Last week in vienna i stumbled into a very rough, very alternative student bar, being very drunken and we where delighted to our big surprise they had every Ardbeg even up to the commitee bottles, every Lapghroaig and tons of empty bottles of those plus a pretty good assortment of whiskies you wouldn´t expect in a student bar at all.
    When we realised the bar man was as stoned as we where hammered (that´s why they served us anything anyway) we decided to order the Bunnahabhain Eirigh na Graine by pointing towards it, 'the one with the white label up there' and then we asked what the name of that one would be. The young, very stoned austrian bar man went the most elegant route imaginable, looked at it and answered in strong vienna accent without hesitation: His name is Erich - and then he poured it into Glencairns to make our visit perfect. Erich is just the german, oldfashioned version of eric and one thing is for sure: you would have absolutely loved that bar!

    I've got to agree with everything you said. It's a simple, to the point, decent dram at a good value. A 'why not' whisky rather than a 'wow' whisky, which is completely ok. Cheers dude

    Had this at a whiskey tasting about two years ago. Remember being really impressed with it in the moment. Went out and bought one that week. Ended up popping it months later and certainly didn’t seem what I remembered.
    Often wonder if it’s something about the total experience of where you are, who you are with, expectations, and palate of the day….more than the whisky itself.

    Like this, and have had several bottles to date. But I totally agree it has changed and not for the better. A year or two ago it was much more an oddball "Marmite whisky" and I loved that savoury/bonfire weirdness that stood out from the crowd. Still good enough to buy again, but I just wish it would return to its original less "generic Islay" character.

    Great Review as always.
    I finished a Bottle of this Klingonstuff last Year but i was a bit dissapointed but on another Side not, because i know when it comes to Bunnas, i better stick to the Age stated Ones.

    Glad to see another Klingon reference just like the old review. Tastes change but good jokes don't. There a lot of good and reasonably cheap sherry and peat bottles around. It's a great way to hide youth so it's become a go to for non age stated offerings in a core range. I think the Kilchoman Sanaig is the best of these but the Laphroaig Sherry Oak is also pretty good. This Bunna just doesn't come close to those. The 12 is a little more but significantly better

    Dear Geoff, I'm having a Bunnahabhain Toiteach-a-Dhà just these days (Bottle Code 2348550 L5 08:08 22069, for those who can interpret it). I paid for it 56,90 €.
    Good stuff in my opinion (I rated it with a score of 85/100), even if I cannot compare it to previous bottlings.
    The nose has hints of peat, fresh citric notes (orange peel, burnt lemon zest), medicinal notes, then sherry and spicy oak, vanilla, and dried autumn fruits.
    Oily and full-bodied in the mouth, fresh, slightly salty, raisins, Sherry and oak, spices, leather, and tobacco, nutty and slightly ashy and medicinal.
    The finish is medium length, sweet and dry at the same time, then a little bitter and ashy. Woody notes and tannins.
    The proposal is interesting, but its value for money (in the Italian market) is not favourable compared to other alternatives, since the price is nearly 60 euros, much higher than that of the 12yo.

    Excellent review as always. Tried a tiny sample years ago but that's it. I've had the Bunna peaters in the back of my mind recently. Peaty NAS can work but it needs a lot of peat to mask the youthful feints. The other issue with NAS is that it's an irresistible temptation to any distillery to cut corners with an established expression and hope to get away with it.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 місяці тому +1

      Agree about the cutting corners. Bunna put out a cheeky 40% "cold-filtered" whisky called Bagh Cluin for the Taiwanese market and it tastes about 3 years and 1 second old. Didn't even have the decency to use peat to try and cover it up. Hah.

  • @supervillan326
    @supervillan326 2 місяці тому

    Not sure how old my bottle is - I bought it a year ago. I find it’s got a nice balance between peat and sweet, (so perhaps it’s an older batch). I’ve very much enjoyed it and as you said in your review, it’s very good value for money.
    I’m anticipating that I’ll buy a replacement once it’s gone, so I’d personally recommend it to anyone who whose jam is peat / sweet, (as opposed to sweet / peat).

    • @supervillan326
      @supervillan326 2 місяці тому

      Actually, I’ve tried this again tonight and changed my mind. It’s more peat dominant than I remembered so the balance for me is close, but isn’t quite right.
      I completely agree with your tasting notes, (although instead of smoked meats, more me, I’d describe it as maple smoked bacon on the palate / finish).
      Still very enjoyable for me, but I stand corrected - my humble apologies Geoff. 😔

    I don't know how anyone drinks this one. Even my bottle from a few years ago is sour. It's like lemon juice with some bad version of peat added. I appreciate a peated whisky too, and this stuff just ain't it. It's an assault on the senses. There's nothing even remotely redeeming about it.
