great video. I want to add that I have had the chance to speak to Brad Buxer who was MJ's musical Director as well as his keyboardist and co wrote several songs with MJ. They were great long and trusted friends and Brad is a humble and gracious guy. He opened up more about the whole Sonic 3 situation and here is what I can tell you. MJ was contacted by Sega to do the music for the game but initially was not interested because the sound chip was not good enough for his standards despite being a fan on sonic and sega games, but specifically for his music he was not interested. A rep for Sega assured MJ that the game would be for a new model with higher quality sound and convinced him to take on the project. This was sometime in 1992 before he went on his Dangerous Tour. At this time he was working closely with Brad and asked him to work on it with him. They would bounce ideas back and forth with each other and compose while Brad would arrange the tracks on his keyboard. They continued to do so while traveling the world on the Dangerous Tour while in their hotel rooms whenever they had some down time. Early on in 1993 MJ had to have more scalp surgeries due to the incident he suffered years prior. He was in a lot of pain and to get through it and be able to perform he was taking strong pain meds that he began to become dependent on. This coupled with the stress of a World tour found him little time to dedicate to work on sonic so they stopped for a while. Shortly after MJ got word of the allegations that were going to be thrown against him and at that point he just broke down mentally and physically as any human would. Shortly after he cancelled the rest of his tour and entered himself into a rehab/retreat but not before MJ and Brad worked together and wrote "Stranger in Moscow" which is arguably MJ's greatest song. Brad would ask occasionally if he wanted to work on Sonic to help take his mind off things but he just said "nah, you can do it if you want" he just did not care at that point when figuratively the world was crashing down on him. When Sega contacted Brad regarding the music he submitted around 40 lines of music which was a good amount. Brad said that when the tracks got back to MJ he did not like the way it sounded and its not what the rep promised him the game would sound like so he just dropped out of it. Whether or not he was dropped due to allegations is arguable because MJ continued to do projects with Sega and would receive all of Sega's systems and games as gifts. Brad has still not heard the official sonic tracks but you can definitely tell which tracks have MJ and Brads influence in them. Brad even put music from his band the Jetzons in there after MJ said he could do what he wanted with it. I hope this sheds some light on the whole Sonic 3 situation.
Michael still lives on in the video game world. Yakuza 0 has some great camoes from him! Of course, named differently, but it's an amazing game and hillarious cameo.
Utterly brilliant in every possible way. As a fellow MJ fan seeing this was a complete treat. I once spent about 30 quid in Spain playing the moonwalker arcade game until I could beat it and I would do it all over again today, it's such a blast! I think today I shall be playing some Ready to Rumble boxing 2 so that tells you how much I loved this video mate. Awesome! Just Awesome!
massive massive thanks bud :) always great to read stuff like this, unfortunately i didnt know the moonwalker arcade game even existed until i got online, would love to have played it :)
I'll tell you exactly why...cause Amercians are weird and have really bad habits of choosing who they think should be famous. In America, it's high school rules...popularity is the only thing that matters, not talent, smarts, etc. How you get popularity is usually based on something not related to what you're actually trying to gain popularity in. Confusing? Try living here man. Anyways, people like Daniel, those who know their stuff and put in the most effort to present it well and accurate, there's no drama or other stupid entertaining quality, and that bores most Americans. You look at popualr gamers in this country, none are actually top performers in their games, cause a lot of social media drama and try to gain fame outside the community. Then you have American UA-camrs who are top tier at there games, actively give back to the gaming oommunity, spend hours of research to make accurate claims and just overall put their 110% into their videos and have maybe a small dedicated fan base. Daniel, if you read this, don't worry. You may not have the numbers they do but know that your fans know how legit your content is and totally respect you for it. I wish I knew how to edit so that I too can be on your level but i'm glad to see that true talent and respect for the genre still exists. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos!
Hey Daniel! I've been watching a lot of your videos lately and wanted to give a quick shout out. I really like hearing more about the history of games, even the ones I haven't played or liked that much. The quality of your videos is excellent in this regard. But what I enjoy most about them is that I can hear your passion for (SEGA) games. And that's what we need more of. It's so cool to hear someone really loving his hobby instead of complaining about dips in quality, bad graphics, console wars and so on.
I remember playing the Michael Jackson arcade game when growing up in South Africa, a random little corner shop had it next to Cadillac's and Dinosaurs
In 1987 I bought the Bad album, in 1988 I went to see the Bad Tour show and in 1989 I bought the Moonwalker game for my Commodore 64. Hearing the 8-bit versions of Michaels songs fills my heart with joy!
Sega's Yakuza 0 includes a character called "Miracle Johnson" who is Michael Jackson in everything but name. Obviously the game came out after your video, but I think it's a neat little tribute to Sega's history with Jackson.
What a fantastic video! I never knew that Michael was this much interessted to be a part in video games. Really cool. My head was nodding the whole time while watching :) Thank you very much.
Michael was a God amongst mere mortals. We are all quite blessed that he chose to share his talent and heart with the world. Killer video, Dan. Love live the legacy of the King of -Pop- Music.
29:39 credo of non-violence. Uh not sure where that came from. OK but let's gloss-over the Smooth Criminal machine gun and the infamous Black Or White car wrecking sequence.
he worked for sonic back in the day, sega said michael's advisor told them not to publish that michael did so. dunno why probably it'll ruin his image since there were controversies with some video games. some say that the red shoes of sonic was inspired from michael jackson.
I gotta agree on Jackson's talent. to this day I still think Thriller is not only the greatest music video EVER but possibly the greatest song ever. it just flat out kicks ass.
I have fond memories of playing the arcade version of moonwalker. The black suit Michael with the purple lightning I thought was so badass. I wish I could play it again just for nostalgia.
I LOVE Mike Jack. There will never be a more prolific or influential artist. These games do not do him justice. Feels like the developers were on some pretty strong hallucinogens with these plots
I have nothing but good memories of both the Genesis/Megadrive version and the Arcade. The Genesis edition was the very first game my parents bought me after I got the hardware, which made it the second Genesis I played (Right after Altered Beast). As for the LEGENDARY arcade, I have fond memories of wasting all of my coins on it time and again. What an amazing title, the arcade edition. Great fun, lots of action, fantastic music. God damn, it was good being a kind in te 90s!
Great video. Never fails to amaze me how you manage to get so many interviews with the people who made these games! Speaking of Simpsons arcade game, any chance of a 'COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE SIMPSONS GAMES' coming anytime soon? It would be a long video, but damn good ;D
I didn't know about this video until yesterday. 😅 EDITS- 12:52 P.M.: *finishes video 48 minutes later* 12:54 P.M.: But I didn't watch it until now! 1:04 P.M.: This video was interesting. Especially the part when you talked about the U.S. Gold version of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. I had only heard about it but never saw any gameplay until now. 🤓
You forgot to mention that when you do Michael's special dance move in the Mega Drive version, the dance will change (at least in the Thriller stage they did the Thriller dance).
The initial release of the English Genesis version of the game had it, while later ones did not. Good way to check is to let the demo of the game run all the way through to the 3rd stage. Towards the end of that part of the demo, MJ uses his power to make the zombies dance, and that's where Thriller would be. Otherwise it's just a different version of Another Part of Me.
Mang Merciless Nope. There was a rights dispute. Michael Jackson didn't actually write "Thriller," and the original songwriter didn't want it used in the game.
+SuperHns yeah after seeing the mega drive version i went and got the amstrad version and somehow my kid like mind told me they wer the same game hahaha
'Takes the young girl into the woods' - I can see what you mean about how he didn't do himself any favors lol Seriously though, great job with the editing in this vid to avoid any strikes, really top notch
Nice work once again. I did a first impression review of the Genesis version of Moonwalker back in 2009 just months before MJs death. I was very impressed with the game and the soundtrack of course was awesome. Thanks for the insightful review.
Well done and bravo for giving the King of Pop the respect he deserves! I had Moonwalker for the Genesis but I sold it (like an idiot) and now I'm trying to get another copy for a decent price :( I was fortunate to be able to play the arcade version in an actual video game arcade and it was AWESOME! Keep up the great work!
Daniel Ibbertson heres an Interesting story, You know how Moonwalker on Genesis goes for pretty much 50 bucks now?, well back in 2010 when My town was having a Yard Sale & everybody were selling & giving things away, One of the things I found there was Of course "Michael Jackson's Moonwalker", The lady who had It. Came it to Me totally Free and I was so very Happy to not only to Finally have The Game but also not Pay 50 bucks for it. :) (I also did a Review of Moonwalker on Genesis. but also wearing My Smooth Criminal costume when I did it. xD)
7:25 Actually Ghostbusters on the Commodore 64 and Street Fighter The Movie on the Sega Saturn are praised. It would have been cool if you'd talked about the Master System version as that one was different as well. It's the one I have least knowledge of.
i didn´t know about that pc version , i just ve played the arcade version .... but i always sucked on isometric games, i guess for killing enemies diagonally was hard for me as a kid...
cracking video on the history of the game. from what I remember the us gold game was a bit rubbish. loved the megadrive game though. only played the arcade version on mame and enjoyed
Again, Your content should be on TV. i have watched all your " Complete History " videos. Amazing. You are indeed the uncrowned underground Gaming king. What software do you use for creating your vids? Greetings from Egypt !
That's one way to get the player to click past the screen haha. No worries, mate. Just some feedback in case it helps you in the future. I know I benefit from feedback on my own channel.
Great video I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan he is the greatest entertainer the world has ever seen I still own and play Michael Jackson moonwalker on the mega drive
So you're not married to Jackie Chan? ^_^ I like the slideshow, very creative solution to 'fair use' problems that didn't seem to be a problem for a least a couple decades until lately. "Here's to the pencil pushers, may they all get lead poisoning."
Another great insight into iconic games. My cousin had Moonwalker on VHS and we would always fast forward to the Speed Demon & Smooth Criminal parts and not bother with the rest of it lol. Can't say as I've ever played the US Gold version and I know I'm probably in the minority but I was never fond of the MegaDrive version either. However I'm glad to see the arcade version get some love as played that a lot in the arcades as a kid & thought (Still do) that it's a great game.
+shockz16 Yeah its defo nostalgia that wins people over on the mega drive versions. The main thing i remember before i replaying for this review was working out how to moonwalk lol
I don't know what's more disturbing about Speed Demon,, the obvious knock off of the McGuire Twins on top of the other claymation nightmares or the statue of liberty. I have played the Arcade version. It was eons ago. However i did get bored during the first part so didn't get further.
It was confirmed a year or two ago that Michael contributed to Carnival Night Zone and the Credits but took his name off of it because he wasn't happy with the Mega Drive's capabilities. This was just before the allegations.
+RealaAroura Ahhhh nice, thanks for clearing that up, I knew this was something that would have so much more information about it as time went on so decided to sort of brush over it, otherwise it would date the video quite badly
Just started watching your stuff, they are great but I have one gripe. Could you show some of the stuff that you talk about, even if its just a screenshot? You talk about the Speccy version and the music in it but you never show it, and I was dying to know what the other players in the arcade game looked like. Anyhow, great work!
Absolutly buddy, I appreciate the feedback. This is one of my earliest videos and at this point I was still learning. I am always looking at improving :() Thanks again for checking the videos mate
If it's on the Speccy, rest assured it will look better than the Amstrad and C64 version, and probably better than the arcade. No need to check. Signed, a Speccy owner.
Your voice sounded so deep and gravelly in this one lol, were you sick, or maybe taking it incredibly seriously? Not a complaint, just curious! Been watching many of your videos including the recent ones, your channel is amazing and I wish you all the best with it!
I had a few issues with the "70's" part of the video. My first issue is that you never mentioned how The Jackson 5 became The Jacksons after leaving Motown. My second issue is that you said The Jackson 5ive received a live action version of the show. It didn't. What we got was a completely different show capitalizing on the trend of variety shows at the time. It was called The Jacksons. 🧐
TBH, I have to agree with the AVGN on the MegaDrive port, sorry! The arcade version, however, has me obscessed in a "King of Kong" kind of way. A perfect game MUST be possible, right?! Great commentary on the Moonwalker games though, thanks for the well-made vid.
nobody beats MJ. sure nowadays celebs get a game as well, sometimes, but he was like THE celebrity, and his game was THE game you just had to own! the Genesis one at least, it stood out so much! i loved it. even more than the aerosmith one! and what do u know, i completely agree that he was really a good person. not a happy person, i think, cuz they did mess him up a bunch... but he was totally awesome! loving kids \ feeling like a kid isn't the same thing as being a molester. and that kind of talent well damn it's as rare as a nobel prize worthy intellect. one in billions!
great video. I want to add that I have had the chance to speak to Brad Buxer who was MJ's musical Director as well as his keyboardist and co wrote several songs with MJ. +Hugh Egg WOW thanks so much for this, I suggest everyone thumbs it up to keep it high. Really appreciate the info :)
I'm unsure for certain, but I think one of the MJ influenced tracks was also on Sonic & Knuckles game, the Sandopolis Zone:: Act 1 & 2
wow interesting
Michael still lives on in the video game world. Yakuza 0 has some great camoes from him! Of course, named differently, but it's an amazing game and hillarious cameo.
KotoAzure I agree.
I agree. MJ was awesome. Nobody compares.
As a fan of both video game history and Michael Jackson, this was awesome!
+MonsterMatt095 You sound just like me hahaha :) glad you enjoyed it mate
MonsterMatt095 you should play space channel 5

22:34 - Isn't that the Spider Man symbol in the middle of the elevator floor? Apparently, Mr. Big is in tight with the Marvel Comics Universe.

What a fantastic video! I never knew that Michael was this much interessted to be a part in video games. Really cool. My head was nodding the whole time while watching :) Thank you very much.
You missed one game, "I'm Sorry" by, once again, Sega in the arcades featuring MJ as a baddie.
Also, in the PlayStation game Bust A Groove ("Bust A Move" in Japan), MJ's song "2 Bad" is sampled in the music of Strike's stage.
Great video! Very interesting and informative. I'm a Michael Jackson fan as well so I found it really enjoyable. Thanks! :)
+Ginga Thank you :) Glad you enjoyed it :D
mj shows up in a more recent Sega game: ryu ga gotoku zero aka yakuza zero. it's coming to the U.S. in January
+Kaz Kinnikuman ahhhh really? Thats interesting
These complete story videos are FANTASTIC!

gotta love MJ, i used to play moonwalker a lot. this was a really great video. really enjoyed it :)

Awesome video! I loved the Arcade version, I only saw but not played the Genesis version but never knew about the Amiga one.
you rock man all your documentaries kick ass
I have fond memories of playing the arcade version of moonwalker. The black suit Michael with the purple lightning I thought was so badass. I wish I could play it again just for nostalgia.

Love this vid !!! Two of my favourite things MJ and video games in one!!!!! 😀😀
i love how these videos are edited and produced.

At 8:27 that is Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins near Jerr Ocarroll's hand. One of the best alternative rock albums of all time
+totallyterrificpants You have a great eye, HAHAHA. I did not notice that at all and you are the first to mention it :D
Love the channel! Keep on the good work!

Never knew why they didn't use Thriller for the zombies stage on the mega drive version.
Copyright reasons. Michael Jackson didn't write that song, Rod Tempterton did.
***** I know the Japanese version has Thriller, but it was replaced for the American version.
The initial release of the English Genesis version of the game had it, while later ones did not. Good way to check is to let the demo of the game run all the way through to the 3rd stage. Nope. There was a rights dispute. Michael Jackson didn't actually write "Thriller," and the original songwriter didn't want it used in the game.
Jesus Christ this is a good video. You need to pass me in subs, I feel guilty. lol

your videos are so good sometimes i watch them twice
I loved the SEGA MD and Arcade game, especially since you can co op play it.
I never knew an Amstrad / Amiga versione ever existed :O
+SuperHns yeah after seeing the mega drive version i went and got the amstrad version and somehow my kid like mind told me they wer the same game hahaha
Same here
A small mistake on the Moonwalker/Genesis. The graveyard stage is NOT based on Thriller, but on "Another Part of Me"
For the amount of work that goes into these videos, it sucks that your videos aren't as popular as they should be.
+RetroTwo Thanks :) Hopefully in time more peeps will see them :D
THANK YOU FOR DEFENDING MICHAEL!

Great piece or research, can't understand why hasn't more likes or views
Great Video Man

It's amazing that no matter his roles in Goodfellas and Casino, this role was probably Joe Pesci's darkest role.
Oh...a let's play (clicks link) DANG IT UA-cam!!! Good video Mr. DJ.

4:12 made me laugh harder than it should have
Just noticed that Sega had ONE FONT back then. Same font as in the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat
you have seen live and in person Michael Jackson! hats off to you kind sir...
I realy enjoyed this, i am so happy to discover new things about Michael and his part in video games. keep up the good work ;)
Amazing quality here.

+CritiKylie Ahhhhhh thanks so much, Really pushing myself this year to get out as much as possible :D glad you like em
Have great memories of this on MD, so glad you mentioned the epic Amiga version though. Ow!!
7:25 Actually Ghostbusters on the Commodore 64 and Street Fighter The Movie on the Sega Saturn are praised. It would have been cool if you'd talked about the Master System version as that one was different as well. It's the one I have least knowledge of.
+P Ferreira Your right, I think I actually played on teh MS version as a friend had it
Daniel Ibbertson I know Moonwalker on the MS isn't exactly the same that's why it would have been cool to see it covered.
Funny those mj videos I have seen where on vhs and they where the oddest versions of them lol awesome video
i didn´t know about that pc version , i just ve played the arcade version ....
but i always sucked on isometric games, i guess for killing enemies diagonally was hard for me as a kid...
We have a few barcades here, in Chicago, that have working boxes for Moonwalker!
one of the greatest games ever created thank you so much for this video
You forgot a game on the SEGA DREAMCAST, Michael Jackson Ready 2 Rumble 2 he's a hidden unlockable character .
cracking video on the history of the game. from what I remember the us gold game was a bit rubbish. loved the megadrive game though. only played the arcade version on mame and enjoyed
Again, Your content should be on TV. i have watched all your " Complete History " videos. Amazing. You are indeed the uncrowned underground Gaming king.
What software do you use for creating your vids?
Greetings from Egypt !
+EgyptianDarknessTeam ahhhh thank u so much, im so happy u like it so much
As usual, interesting info and great video. I must admit though, the scrolling background around 9:30 was a bit 'dizzying'.
+KeiNovak Ahhhhhhh sorry dude, lol, This was actually what it was like on the old home computer sections
That's one way to get the player to click past the screen haha. No worries, mate. Just some feedback in case it helps you in the future. I know I benefit from feedback on my own channel.
Much appreciated my friend
Great video I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan he is the greatest entertainer the world has ever seen I still own and play Michael Jackson moonwalker on the mega drive
yet an awesome video! haha i played all except one of those games! awesome history!
and i saw the movie as a kid in cinema still remembering it!
Micheal Jackson MMO. I was not prepared for this kind of anarchy.
+Wraiths On Wings ITS NUTS ISN'T IT!
So you're not married to Jackie Chan? ^_^ I like the slideshow, very creative solution to 'fair use' problems that didn't seem to be a problem for a least a couple decades until lately. "Here's to the pencil pushers, may they all get lead poisoning."
I played arcade version as a kid. It was (and it still is) very good game.
Dan cracking lil tribute to the King of Pop. Had no clue about any of the Dreamcast stuff so kudos 👍
+Friendly Poison thanks mate :D
I use to watch the crap out of this movie when I was kid. lol
I think nobody will answer me but, how do I do the Special of the Arcade Version on Mame?
I am always looking at improving :()
Thanks again for checking the videos mate
If it's on the Speccy, rest assured it will look better than the Amstrad and C64 version, and probably better than the arcade.
No need to check.
Signed, a Speccy owner.
Nobody wanted to believe it but where there is smoke, there is fire.
hat off to you sir! what a video!!! amazing
Thanks dude, this was a bit of a passion project for me :) thanks for commenting
I have most of these games as I am also a huge MJ fan. I only need to find a few on micro computer.
GREAT coverage!
+boilingmanTV thanks bud
darn why does this get more views? bloody brilliant!
+retro rider Thank yo so much, hopefully in time lol
Your voice sounded so deep and gravelly in this one lol, were you sick, or maybe taking it incredibly seriously? Not a complaint, just curious!
Been watching many of your videos including the recent ones, your channel is amazing and I wish you all the best with it!
+Catlan nah it was just an earlier video were i has not discovered the true tone of my voice
What's the name of the music at 23:43?
Wow slopes was there for both!!!
Wow! I have actually played a real Moonwalker machine! It was at a barcade in Manhattan. I feel blessed.
Great video. Love the research.
The voice acting for the arcade game is hilarious
+PooperScooper99 BOOOW
nobody beats MJ. sure nowadays celebs get a game as well, sometimes, but he was like THE celebrity, and his game was THE game you just had to own! the Genesis one at least, it stood out so much! i loved it. even more than the aerosmith one! and what do u know, i completely agree that he was really a good person. not a happy person, i think, cuz they did mess him up a bunch... but he was totally awesome! loving kids \ feeling like a kid isn't the same thing as being a molester. and that kind of talent well damn it's as rare as a nobel prize worthy intellect. one in billions!
