St. John and Montezuma were my favorite places to visit. It is a pretty easy drive as long as you have a decent 4x4. Had many good times taking people there as it would be their first taste of what 4x4 travel is like and where you could go. I remember driving on a dirt road that ended up to a rocky road just west of the Colorado Sand Dunes that was at a 30-40 degree incline. My friends says, "guess we are at the end of the road." I slammed the the K5 into 4x4 low and said, "we just started!" And there we went up the hill to her screaming.

It's a fun trail with great views. Those climbs are a lot steeper than they look on the camera.

Last time I was there was over 30 years ago. Should have some old VHS video to convert. I know I have lots of slides as photography was my hobby back then. But there was a house above St. John? Wonder if it was still there? I remember having a picnic in front of it on a first date. In St. John there was a house build with brick brought in from Europe for the assay office. Last time I was there some guy was taking it apart. He was not making any drawings or labeling the wood as he tossed the wood planks around. I thought he said something about rebuilding it as the weather was taking its toll.

Can this be done in a full size truck? Or is a smaller vehicle preferred?

The best place to get that answer is on our website. Head over to the page (you can find a link in the video description above). If you can't get the answer on the page, you can asked the writer at the bottom of the page and they should be able to help you.
