I was very fortunate to hold a baby orang at the rehabilitation centre in Malaysia and they are just the most loving little guys imaginable. The one I looked after was called Abu and he kept kissing me on the cheek and pulling my beard with his little hands. So cute. At the end of the day when they went to take him off me and put him back to bed he wouldn’t let go and started crying - needless to say so did I.

These animals amaze me. They are so big and clumsy looking....but they are not. Very gentle, and so smart! She knew he was choking, and knew just what to do! One thing I've noticed is that compared to most other primates, they aren't very vocal are they?

Lorrie Sodrok compared to all other great apes they are not very vocal at all, primarily because they are not social animals and pretty much always live alone unless it’s a mother and her baby. This is because they are the most arboreal (living in trees) of all the great apes and their food sources are relatively scared and very much spread out making it not practical/hardly possible for many orangs to be in one place.
Bornean Orangs communicate with sound very minimally because of the reason listed above, while Sumatran orangs are not vocal at all, this is because there are tigers on Sumatra while there are none in Borneo.

Actually, now that logging roads have made forests recede in Indonesia, making these apes accessible, we're able to study them much more closely than before, and what we're learning is that they are _not_ the antisocial animals we thought they once were. Cases have been recently reported of groups of two or more mothers forming, thus allowing socialisation between children. And this changes everything.
They're also more violent than originally believed. With less territory to claim, flanged males ready to mate will not only fight each other for breeding females, but the sex isn't fun like Bonobos or sweet like Gorillas. The females are raped, flat out and the male leaves once its over. In one of my classes I watched video of this rape happening right there in a zoo--wasn't even in the wild.
The youngsters also show capacity for flash violence against other juveniles that we weren't aware of before, or that we were certain wasn't part of their core behaviour. This too, makes sense, since social groups forming in the wild means a juvenile that was all alone and didn't have to know sibling social skills, are now in positions where these skills will mean either success in a sanctuary troop, or life in one of their back cages.
So you can pretty much toss out everything we thought we once knew about these apes, since they've been the most solitary up to now due to geographical concerns.
As far as intelligence goes, that has to be relearned, too. They are good at copying and mimicry, but as far as having the capacity to figure out the logical path to solve independent problems, they are still in fourth place behind Bonobos, Common Chimpanzees, and Gorillas, all species. The first four have the capacity for logic that for some reason the Orangutans lack.
And where chimpanzees (Common) are noted for carrying anger of watching their parents killed for years to come, even exacting revenge if afforded the chance, fully capable of first-degree murder, orangutans seems to be more self-centred. When puberty hits and the mother has an infant to care for, the adolescent has trouble letting go of that number one place in mum's heart, with cases where the juvenile has physically hurt the infant.
So where we once thought them very much like some parts of the other 4 species, we're now learning through more direct observation and research that they're a lot different than we knew.
I hope it's okay I share this. I'm a scientist first and foremost before I ever began studying primatology, but I still hold the belief that scientific knowledge is for everyone and must be shared.
      Thanks, and cheers.

I am mad about this mommy and this baby. I have learned so much watching these two and in another video of theirs about 10 minutes long. This mother and baby are so sweet. His mother is such a fine instinctive teacher, and she knows when to intervene and when to back off. Plus, all of the love and hugs and kisses she gives this baby are envious to behold. I think this is my favorite mom and baby, and I really like their videos.

What a horrible life for these amazing creatures. They should be in the wild and if not in the wild they should be in a wildlife sanctuary for orangutans. There is little to no stimulation for them in a zoo and they are sooo intelligent. Zoos need to become extinct. There is absolutely no reason for them. People can learn from going to the sanctuaries themselves and watching by wild life programs. They aren't just dumb animals. They are highly intelligent and should be treated with respect and the utmost care.

    • @keithmuehsam8990
