    what arises in me
    as I watch this video
is just how much pain I'm in...
    suicidal grief and homicidal rage.
    nothing to live for.
    it all seems devastatingly hopeless.
the past rapes and haunts me...
the future paralyzes me with fear.
and I only feel overwhelming shame
    in the present.

I find that the phrase, "focus on the I AM." is very peaceful and feels deeper than "am I aware?" This is not a criticism of the question. It is that I know the feeling of Being and awareness as the same. There is no real difference. Its all a felt experience. My mind has been full of thoughts of the week of work. It is scattered with all kinds of responsibilities. It feels so good to withdraw the focus outward and to focus on the Self, Presence, Being. same same same. Thank you for your work Rupert.

Micah Forsberg it helped me to see that I am aware of being. 'I' is awereness and 'I am' is one step lower. It is the first perception of separation. Beingness goes when the body-mind goes, but awereness remains. Hope this helps.

My 2cnts is that the seven "I AM" sayings of Jesus are not on Jesus but on the "I AM."
Jesus speaks AS the I AM, dependent on punctuation.
    1. I AM; the bread of life” -John 6:35, 41
    2. I AM; the light of the world” -John 8:12, 9:5
3.1. I AM; the door of the sheep” -John 10:7, 9
    etc.

It could also be said that awareness is merely the thought that is currently happening and if the current thought turns its attention on itself it creates a kind of feedback loop. It becomes aware of itself. It becomes a thought about a thought. The loop can be maintained but not indefinitely although, with discipline, the "feedback loop" thought can become the main one...

I am a Hindu, who are very proud of their ancient texts on this very topic.,But look at the difference. Those are dense, with no attempt to make the instructions intelligible. These are masterly.
This is true of everything ancient that Hindus are proud of. If you really want to understand that topic, look up the work of a Westerner on it.

These questions are a shortcut to what it feels like to be in the present moment after you've realized there is no self, but they aren't a sure-fire way to ever realize there is no self. That's actually the problem- you're still using a self to ask the self to invalidate its existence. You have to approach it without concepts. Actually, not quite true, there are a few people on UA-cam who can use words to penetrate the illusion, but they're cut-throat. They provide no soft pillow to land on when they pull the rug out from under you.

You say he, I forgot who, says that the source is from our heart but not literally. For me it is experienced in my literal heart. Otherwise, I enjoyed most of your message. I believe that all life seeks pleasure and avoids pain. I believe that life begins at Birth and ends with death. Consciousness, self awareness, is a mental activity, which includes all the experiences in my body and memory.
In the present moment, I am all my past and my thoughts and feelings regarding the future. I experience all of them in the present along with my current thoughts, feelings and awareness.
When I am open in my mind I am not holding on to the past or the future, and am free to experience the moment with amazing creativity and perception. I live in a mental state of, "I do not know." My consciousness rest in my body, especially my heart. With my open mind, I experience life through my body. When I have feelings, all the time :-), I accept them as my current experience. Same with thoughts. I am the stream of consciousness that is constantly changing, though I experience me as a constant, individual sense of self. You probably don't think I'm enlightened!
When my body dies, so will my consciousness.

Yes, the consciousness rises from the Heart (the Sacred, not the organ, but it is located there between the nipples). But you are beyond consciousness itself, beyond the I AM as Nisagardatta said. I have not realized this so i will refrain from saying anything more, just that you dwell on this.

    What Rupert call awareness is,
    our Day-Consciousness,
it Never sleep, just goes in Circuits,
    Day/Night, and Larger.
    Yaeh, We do HAVE Day-Consciousness,
    Night-Consciousness is Deep-Sleep,
when our Day-Consciousness is Not there.

So, during the climax of a successful self-enquiry (''who am I?'') why can I still observe the world (sensory perception) throughout?, this being that Rupert claims the world is observed through the mind (a thought) which ive allegedly, albeit momentarily, collapsed into its source ('awareness) therefore, again, why can I still observe phenomena during self - enquiry? Thanks

    • @SoulHub
      @SoulHub Рік тому

The mind is asking. But ultimately there is no mind. There is only awareness, and the mind is simply its activity of thought. So awareness is seemingly asking itself, waking itself up out of its own dream of identifying with objects and losing itself in its own creative act, which causes suffering.

      good question

    • @rpodury
      @rpodury 8 років тому +2

It is a very good questions that bothers serious seekers of the truth. The " Am I aware " or Who am I enquiries may help sinking the mind in the source. Is this knowledge exercise meant to keep the mind for ever in the source like those people who shut themselves in the caves without bothering about the objective world?
The video clips, although provide us glimpses of the Truth, do not help us much unless the whole process is presented and assimilated by us
There are two stages one is recognising the true nature of the 'I" and in stage two recognising the importance of such recognition in relation to the world with objects.
stage one. I think it would be convincing if an attempt is made to answer them without asking the questioner to believe on some unknown scripture for the replies. The questioner would be in a better position to appreciate the answers if the replies are such that one can test himself in his own direct understanding.
They are three items s involved in the question 1. you the questioner/seeker 2, the world with objects ( entire creation) and 3 The so-called God or creator or whatever you name.
Of these 3, in the order of proximity, the questioner is aware of himself and the created world he observes as something outside him and as regards the third, he only imagines or infers that here is a God or creator.
The answers for the 2nd and 3rd lie in the first one only if the seeker correctly understands his true nature. By knowing the truth about himself, he recognises that the 2nd and 3rd ones are nothing but himself.
In order to understand the truth about himself the seeker must have a strong desire and preparedness for deep contemplation and also set aside all the concepts he accumulated regarding creation and God
Now the seeker attempts to know himself. When he sees anything outside his body it is an object to him and it is obvious, at this stage, that he is not the object.
In the next step, he looks at his body and notices all its parts as objects just like an outside object is separate from him. That is why he calls them as my leg, my hand etc implying that he is separate( again at this stage) from them. Extending this observation, he recognises that he is not his mind, thoughts, feelings etc and they are all objects to his subjective awareness which is not an object to anything. Here he should be able to recognise that there is no form to this awareness and when once it is recognised that it has no form it is infinite and not limited to his body alone. ( to have a feeling of this, just imagine infinite sky in that awareness. This is not an action. Just feeling within that awareness )This is a crucial stage. Recognition in oneself this infinite awareness will unfold the following truths
Since he is this infinite awareness - it is implied that there is no beginning or end to that awareness. Since his childhood, there is no change to this awareness though the world around him has been changing-his family, his body and everything. But all through, it is just same awareness.
This recognition should not remain as just an intellectual understanding. It should be direct and irrevocable. It is something like a rocket going out of earth's magnetic pull. Just like the rocket does not come back into earth's magnetic pull once it goes out, the awareness does not find itself again limited to the body only. In a way, it becomes the default state of the seeker. One indication of this direct recognition is that the seeker would be in a state of absolute Freedom- nothing to be feared of, nothing to be achieved, capable of accepting everything as it comes with equanimity.
When once the seeker is convinced about his infinite awareness, now the question of objective world or so called creation could be addressed
By careful observation of his relation with the objective world, he recognises that the world is not outside his awareness and it is nothing but awareness. To drive the point home, one example could be given initially. The seeker recognises the world in his dream in all its variety as if it is outside his awareness. But on waking up, he knows that there was no dream world except his awareness.
Now, can we say the same of the world in waking state? What is the relation between awareness and outside world in waking state? How does a seeker would be aware of the world? It is through the knowledge of the objects. There is the knower ( seeker), the known (object) and the process of perception. When the knower looks at the known it results in the 'knowledge', as the knower and known merge in the 'knowledge.' which is nothing but awareness.
Any seeker is aware of the world through his five senses only. If he touches any object it ends up in the in the knowledge of the object. Similarly tasting, smelling, listening , and looking. In all the cases the 'triputi' ends in knowledge/awareness. Thus, there is no world outside this awareness .
The same thing could be put in a different way. A seeker is aware of the world through thought. What is a thought ? what are its contents? When one thinks of anything is there anything other than awareness in the thought ? When one looks at or thinks of an apple a thought arises in the awareness as knowledge of the apple. We cannot say that there is only awareness as there is the knowledge of the apple also.in awareness. But does any change take place in the awareness with the knowledge of the apple.? No change at all. It can be said, that thought is like a wave in awareness and not separate from awareness as a wave in the sea is nothing but water. But in actual wave one sees a form of water but in actual thought, there is not even that change. Thus a thought , at the most, is a wave-like appearance in awareness without any change in awareness.
It can also be understood with another example. A child of less than two is watching a cat. His mummy has not yet taught him that it is a cat. What happens in the awareness of the child when he looks at the cat. Simply awareness and not even a thought of 'cat'.
I think the point can also be better explained with another example. One is holding two lighted candles in his hands. and when he waves his hands in different directions the candle light takes different forms of shapes. and comes to rest when he stops. In all the shapes that the candle light takes it is candle light only that exists and nothing else. Imagine the individual awareness is like the candle light and when one looks at different objects in the world the awareness only takes the shape of objects. Where are the objects (world) separate from awareness?
Thus, the individual (BMI), the world and the God are nothing but a thought and a thought is nothing but awareness and
all there is is awareness only.

Discover the answer in the question itself. " ' Who am I ' asking this question to WHOM: that is behind the mind seeing thru' these eyes, that is smelling & breathing thru' these nostrils, that is hearing thru' these ears, that is tasting-chewing-swallowing food to nourish the body & speaking thru' this mouth that is sensing touch thru' the skin of these hands, that is moving the body thru' the feet of these legs, that is dwelling in it, operating, monitoring, maintaining the body throughout its lifespan, expressing itself & experiencing itself & NOW explaining all this to WHOM if not ITSELF the silent Observer-Witness of all that is HAPPENING thru' this physical body. So ' where Am I ' that has no identification?

When you ask "Am i aware", you asking a "LIE" as you already know you are aware! therefore the question violates the Main principal of *Truth or Justice!!
Simply,if you are aware, you will not ask that question!
Therefore, the question has no valid and direct people go astray!

I do not think you should be second guessing these Real Masters and while i would say you are a good teacher you are not on their level Rupert.
I have heard you do this a number of times and always with the " I don't want to say blah blah blah" and then the big 'ol But...
Sorry but it makes me think less of you. They were Spiritual Giants....you are a good "Experiential Philosopher"...or as Alan Watts called himself a Stand-Up Philosopher (Ha!).

3.1. I AM; the door of the sheep” -John 10:7, 9
    etc.

Exactly, this is want he meant. "I AM the Alpha and the Omega, I AM the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father (Source) except through me (The Self)." It is incredible the twisting that it was done to his words and message. But everything is according to God's (Source) plan.
