The Rising of the Shield Hero season 2 episode 2 aired today, and in this video I wanted to take a look at spear hero Motoyasu Kitamura, who made a big impact on Naofumi and the audience in season 1. This video does not contain Shield Hero light novel spoilers, but does include information about Motoyasu as a character from skipped content not included in the anime. Hearing that Motoyasu got isekai'd by being stabbed by a yandere sounds bad, but it gets even worse when you learn it was actually TWO yanderes.
Yeah, from what I've heard it's elaborated on in his spin off series, but I haven't read that yet (I'm on volume 21 of the LNs and I'll read it after 22).
Two yanderes fighting over who'll be the one to make the last stab so she can follow him to the afterlife and live happily ever after.

@@NatalieXHunter If you pay attention to what he says in his spin-off about what his life was like before being isekaied, Motoyasu is a character that makes a scary amount of sense when you think about the implications of such a life. I'm not going to go into major spoilers, but Motoyasu was like a protagonist of a different type of game before being an unwilling participant in a murder-suicide turned knife fight. Him seeking a harem isn't because he expects one for going to another world, as he was seeking one even before that as there are guys with them in his world. The major thing hinted at in 3...

Motoyasu's life wass one of a protagonist of (shallow) dating sims at each school he has attended since middle school.
"rather than what he sees as a fat chicken" is a perfect way to describe Motoyasu's view

Motoyasu is my favourite "Chad" character. He reminds me of Aqua from konosuba where he thinks he's doing his best, but he's not smart enough to catch when he's being used.
I knew a guy who was so attractive he became an escort and sadly was targeted by some nefarious people who were jealous and gave him some stuff that led to an OD, where they then emptied his apartment and only called an ambulance 2 hours later to take advantage of the "good semaritan" law that would wipe their hands of the crime.

@@s3studios597 Basically, my friends and I really struggled with his passing cause apparently he lied about his job to his parents since they were affluent and conservative so instead of even filling a police report with the camera evidence and text messages of the people involved who were talking candidly about using fatal substances. They chose to sweep it under the rug denying him proper justice and almost validating that this legal loophole is so easy to exploit.
What really get me is that he apparently signed up to be booked into rehab the next day, so if he was with literally anyone else, he would still be alive.
I've lost friends before, and also lost someone the same month from the also having laced substances who didn't live far from Colby either. And the gov has been playing ads about the rise of addiction after lockdowns so there must have been a notable amount of victims to cause Canadian health care to now include mental health in their covered services.
From my own experience, all addiction is just self medicating for an undiagnosed condition.
But finding a doctor who is able to listen to the individual and assess which treatment they need correctly is as difficult as impressing Simon Cowell with an idol audition.
The system fails people so often they opt to go the "Breaking Bad" over the constant rejection and shaming.
I'm so lucky I had a Family doctor who literally called me the moment I turned legal age to let me know I had ADHD but my parents didn't believe him, or anyone, even though my cousins also have it.
Without that help, I probably would have met a similar fate to my friends last year.
I just hope that if parallel timelines exist, that there's one where right now I could still catch them at the dog park getting buzzed on spiked iced tea while we compare our calendars to see if we're on any of the same projects.
It's the only way I know how to grieve.

Motoyasu is also the most "traditionally" smart hero, as he says he was in college for mechanical engineering during their initial introduction in the castle. And his later "developments" have him jury rig an outright racecar for... reasons... that is FULLY FUNCTIONING AND HAS PRETTY MUCH ALL MODERN CONVENTIONS LIKE SUSPENSION AND GEAR SHIFTING! This man, when he manages to pull his head from his rear, is a borderline genius who comes up with really unique solutions to problems that the other heroes (and strategists) don't even consider. I can't wait until the current novel plotline resolves and we can get the Motoyasu arc to make him "tolerable" as worst and decent to be around at best!
Too bad he lets his other head do 99.99999% of his thinking.

WHAAAAAAATTT bro that's such cool characterization! just a random piece of fact that brings this character to a new height! Like how I found out from one video from Aninews channel that Naofumi liked animals in the previous world as just a small tidbit to tie in his actions in the new world to who he was in the old one in a pretty funny way.
One incident that was cut from the anime that provides a hugely good demonstration of his flaws is the Rino incident. Right before Motoyasu finds that seed, he encounters a very young adventurer girl named Rino who asks to be part of his party. Motoyasu happily accepts, as he had with several other adventurer girls who'd joined but suddenly left when they felt they couldn't fit in. Rino feels kind of awkward watching the way the party works, with all the adventurer girls just sort of cheering Motoyasu on without ever helping, then demanding that he give them whatever they want, but she doesn't really say much. Then, maybe less than a week later, she disappears and the other ladies say that, like the others, she felt she didn't really fit in. He heads out later and ends up walking alone in an alley, where he starts to hear moans coming from a nearby building he figures must be a brothel. He figures if a woman wants to do that sort of work it's up to her and starts to move on when he notices a voice that sounds exactly like Rino, but thinks there's no way Rino would take a job at a place like that. When that voice starts screaming and begging, he thinks "wow, this lady's a great actress to do r*pe play that well" and moves on without a second thought. When he ends up in the dungeon with that seed, he hears the girls from his party first talking about what a pain he is, always ogling them and finding excuses to grope them, and then move on to laughing about how easy it was to trick Rino to go with them, not realizing she was being tricked until her hands were bound and the slave crest was being applied so she'd be unable to defy the brothel owner, just like the other girls. And all Motoyasu thinks is "I remember my game having monsters that sound like your allies saying awful things, this must be one of them" and feels confirmed in this when he comes around the corner to find the ladies over a monster bat's corpse.
Concerning Rino, I hear she does come back much later. Spoilers ahead
She's saved from the brothel by the queen and joins a special spy unit, eventually being sent on a mission to locate Malty (who'd fled at this point). She finds her, infiltrates her party, and finally does what every reader has wanted someone to do since the first chapter of the story. Note, this is only in the light novel. To my knowledge she never appeared in the manga, and Malty/Myne/Bitch/Slut has a very different role in the web novel.

Ah yes, the only other hero who has his own series aside from Naofumi. He's really, really easy to hate but I think one of his biggest mistakes actually is skipped in the anime, well, not really skipped because it's dealt with, but we aren't really given much information.
I'm referring to the cursed seed where Naofumi had to deal with that village full of plants. It must be remembered that the warning against the seed was written in that world's language and only Naofumi had taken the time to learn it because he had to in order to learn magic (and because he was studying magic rather than having it gifted to him by crystals, he ends up knowing even more magic than the other heroes).
Motayasu would not know that the seed he knew about from the game would actually be a cursed item that the creator warned against because he couldn't read the warning.
Pretty sure naofumi still couldn’t read at that point and it was the mage woman who read it for him. The mistake was less that he couldn’t read and more that he was continually lead astray by the women he surrounds himself with. Malty can read and his whole party can too. But none of them bothered and he never questioned why they didn’t translate the tablet right next to the big sealed box.
@@SH1NK1R01 True, but he was learning. He also, upon finding out that the villagers knew about the legend of the cursed seed told them off for blindly trusting a magic seed that just popped up because a hero gave it to them. They had enough information to know it was probably a bad idea.
One thing I love about Naofumi, he doesn't discriminate against who he criticizes.
Yeah, Naofumi had the woman from the magic shop who could read it. But it's true that he was the only one who learned to read for a long time.
@@Dragon_Lair yeah I was glad he mentioned it since at that same moment when I originally saw it I was like. “You people just accepted some glowing red seed from a dude and asked nothing?” Then when they stated that the alchemist who made it was actually from their village to begin with and they had a legend passed down telling them NOT to use the seed. I face palmed. Him telling them off was well earned.
Whats funny about Motoyasu is that, as dumb and lacking in self awareness as he is, he is very realistic in my opinion. There are people exactly like Motoyasu in the real world but i can't understand their perspective tbh.
He is also extremely lame, which makes him very hateable, but thats was the intent i guess, so he is very well writen.

The one who got sold by Myne and actually liked Motoyasu? Yeah. Her absence downplays Myne's evil.

I was so disappointed they skipped that part. Worst part is that, if I remember right, Rino was supposed to be only one of several girls who'd joined out of admiration for him only to just one day disappear because, according to his party members, she "felt she didn't fit in". Yeah, I'm pretty sure that half that brothel's staff was made up of Motoyasu's former party members.

I think everyone has known a "Motoyasu" in their life at one point or another.
According to a spin-off manga, Motoyasu is one of the two heroes who good a cooking, the other is Naofumi. Ren and Itsuki are not good at cooking.
I mean technically both Naofumi and Motoyasu are young adults while Ren and Itsuki are teenagers Soo they both had time to practice
I'd personally love to see you cover the spin-off manga of Motoyasu getting a brain and helping Naofumi after getting a spear that can literally rewind time. It was a blast to read along with the Shield Hero manga I picked up around last summer. Then again, it sort of has a lot of spoilers for events that didn't even happen in the manga yet (with the most hilarious interactions from Myne). but I enjoyed it a lot. Basically, if this airhead had half a brain and wasn't manipulated, how would things go in a quest to find Filo.
I'm reading the LNs rather than the manga but I just finished the latest volume (so I know the spoilers that haven't happened in the manga yet) and I'm going to read the LN version of the Motoyasu spin off next!
@@NatalieXHunter I'm not much of a LN reader, honestly. I've tried in the past and it's hard to focus on it, personally (maybe trying to start with bakamonogatari was a bad idea? who knows!). But eventually I'll make my way to that, somehow. The manga for the spin off is really good too, at least, so I'm sure that the source is just as good if not better. (As far as the main manga goes, I believe it's in the middle of arc 8 or 9, it's before arc 10 where the anime sort of pulled elements in at the end of the first season, at least where I stopped due to it being slow monthly updates grumblegrumble)
I usually just read whatever the thing was originally, so if it was a manga I read the manga, if it was a novel I read the novel. In a lot of ways I prefer manga because I can read a whole series much faster, obviously, and I like the artwork, but since I used to write novels, novels are easier for me to think about analytically, iykwim. I only finished the 22 volumes of Shield Hero that are currently out a couple of days ago, and I was reading for several hours a night for the last month to get caught up ready to make content about it, so I kinda want to take a break from LNs and read some manga now (probably Spy x Family - the anime is so cute!), but I think I'll do the Spear Hero LNs first.
I actually don't hate the Spear hero as I did in season 1 now that I've gotten more than a glimpse of his character. He has his moments where he was more reliable than the Bow or Sword heroes. He's definitely the pretty boy that thinks he's understands women based on his limited knowledge of isekai harems, but doesn't take the time to understand their feelings which creates a potential blind spot for the Spear hero. I find it very interesting that Motoyasu met his end at the hands of a yandere, yet he continues to keep Myne around after all the terrible things she did. I always find it satisfying seeing the Spear Hero get knocked out by Filo whenever he gets close to her.
Motoyasu's character arc in the LN is equal parts interesting and frustrating. In a sort of one step forward, two steps back kind of way, if you know what I mean.

@@Dharengo I'd spent my money of Blu Rays of things I like rather than something which started pretty good and then had something I hated so much the bad outweighed the good in my eyes even if the majority likes the idea. I'm not saying you're wrong to like this. Anime is supposed to entertain, and the more people the better, so I'm happy you find it interesting. It's just not for me. I have a mixed view on spoilers. On one hand, I want to enjoy the stories blind. On the other hand, sometimes I'm glad I got spoiled by the source material so I know if a series matches me or does not match me.
I actually like him. Not for the perversion, but because he genuinely means well only for it to bite him each and every time because he's too stupid to realize that he is a pawn.
Saying Motoyasu is my favorite Hero around Discord leaves to some funny responses, but yeah, i really like the creative way the author went about his "Character arc" not just making his realize his flaws and be a "Average good person", guy goes full saints row on his development and his love for filolials is really cute (Except the filo obcession but i can ignore that) and understandable. I am not saying him still being kinda insane is right but it is certainly fun, i really had a blast reading spear hero and i wish the author was as creative on Naofumi's development imo.
If Motoyasu gets betrayed by Myne, I hope he'll now understand Naofumi's pain and he apologized to him.
Anyone here read the spin off series the reprise of the spear hero? It's actually pretty good and really funny. Kinda made him my favorite out of all the heros, naofumi included, to be honest. A quick summary of it, for anyone curious, basically motoyasu gets return by death.
I haven't finished it yet but I've read the first volume - I was really surprised by how funny it is so far (I talked about it a bit in the spoiler video about the heroes, but not in these anime only ones).
Motoyasu is pretty much exactly how Twitter white knights act. Believing he knows best for women, especially those that want nothing to do with him. He believes women blindly and even after Naofume was proven innocent still resents him, mostly because he has a Raphtalia and Filo, Filo especially as he is very smitten with.
I just saw the Bow Hero video a few hours ago and now this video fallows, awesome!

Whether you like or hate Motoyasu, and I certainly fall into the latter category, you must admit that the amount of abuse his genitalia have taken at Filo's hands have by now more than made up for (most of) his stupidity

to be fair even the author had mercy on him, as far as i hear he is the only hero who got his own spinoff series. also have you seen the ammount of force filo has in her claws earlier and later in the series and she didnt even looked like she hold back this guy got balls of steel and bones of metall (and probably no offsprings in the future, i really probably hoped for a happy future with bitch-chan for a bit maybe).

I had not read the light novel until after much of the first season was out, so I was unaware of Rino when I watched the first half. I can understand them not including her, but the least they could of done was change out Motoyasu's party. From what I gathered from his extra chapter in volume 1, which takes place around the time Naofumi left with Raphtalia and ended up fighting that two headed dog monster, that Motoyasu's party was comprised of women who joined after Myne did, at least one of whom went to school with her. It was pretty clear they were in league with her. This means that with in the span of a few weeks, all the girls who joined Motoyasu on the first day were gone. Given what happened to Rino after Motoyasu left her alone with the other girls, it's not hard to guess what happened to them.
Anime only watchers likely would of been confused by the switch. Granted they were still confused when one of Moyotasu's girls was missing when he fought with Naofumi at the border and it turned into a 4v4.
Still it is a shame that they had to cut Rino, as it gave a look into Motoyasu's head. Myne and the other girls acted more like cheerleaders, hanging back and collecting EXP from the party system. He was confused why Rino wanted to help fight the monsters rather than let him carry the whole party.
I think what's most frustrating about the 3 heroes is not that they don't develop, because they do, but how much time it takes them and how long they are stuck being outright burdens
They all have interesting flaws(JUSTICE and arrogance, women addict and lack of social skill and arrogance) but despite being given defeats/mistakes pretty early on it takes a lot for them to have meaningful change(spoiler for the wn below)
The most frustrating thing is that it takes that they face mind breaking trauma to actually start working on their flaws
Well, to be fair, Naofumi also suffered mind-breaking trauma before he became what he is. Only difference is that his trauma happened in chapter 1 while the rest had to wait volumes for theirs.

Despite being a completely vapid toolbox, I'd still much rather have Motoyasu over an actual harem protagonist. At least he's an actual character with an actual personality, even if it isn't good.
My favorite thing about him is that he explicitly call out how much Filo is a Goblin Slayer-tier ripoff of Flonne from Disgaea.

Not really on topic with the anime, but I absolutely love spear characters in videogames. Any videogame or mmo that has a spear class I always pick it. Shame I can't see this spear hero in a cool light but it is what it is 😔

It’s crazy to think about, but dear god, they are young. I know it’s because I’m older, but they really are just babes in the woods at the start of the story.
With the upcoming seasons, if the supposed character growth happens ( I hope it does), I feel as if we're gonna feel bad for the other 3 heroes.
For true growth to happen, Naofumi had to be broken and be built back up by people who actually cared for him. The other 3.....oh man. They haven't been humbled yet and I'm here for it. Great video as always.
I think people will feel bad for two of them and just baffled by the other one haha!
It depends really on how far they are going and plan to stop. I imagine season 2 is going to focus on the spirit tortoise and then season 3 will be more character focused.
@@NatalieXHunter It is hard to imagine as anime only at this point to feel bad for any of the 3 clowns so far. But since Fitoria and queen Melromarc are so persistent on the 4 Cardinal Heroes to work together there has to happen at least something with the other 3 and would be nice to see some of it this season, but my guess is that probably won't happen so soon.
I only looked at one.....and well. I almost shed a tear because it was on the same level as the false accusation if not worse. S2 is gonna be better than the first.

Only read if you are interested.
I heard that there was a separate story called Reprise of the Spear Hero, though I am not sure if this goes into the Spear Hero's backstory or if it starts off when Nafomi is falsely accused by Mai and it goes into Motoyasu's interpretation of events.
Though for those who want to know if there are any redeeming qualities to the Spear Hero, that might be the storyline to research on.
It's actually neither of those things - it's a spin off that occurs much later in the story (like, it would tie in with the last few currently available volumes) and takes place after Motoyasu has changed quite a lot from how he is at the start.

I was aware you asked for no spoilers in the comments, so I was trying my best to ask if that spinoff ever took place towards the start or somewhere in the middle of the series at least in the Light Novels.
Considering it will take a number of years if the Anime adaptation does decide to go down that path, it might be something that anime only fans of Shield Hero might want to read since it won't spoil the plot too much in the series.
At least that was my way of thinking.
People can put spoilers if they want, I just ask them to put a spoiler warning and then some blank spaces so people reading the comments have to expand them to see the spoilers. It just stops people getting accidentally spoiled. When the videos have spoilers though, there's no need to do that.
But yeah, anime only fans wouldn't be able to read the Motoyasu spin off without spoilers - it diverges really late in the LN series.

Motoyasu is the harem Isekai protagonist, gone wrong and surrounded by toxic manipulative women instead of a normal harem unit.
And that's what makes him a valuable character. By pointing at how awful harem protagonists can get.
His main girl is toxic and manipulative, but I'm not sure about the others. They may just be intimidated by the bitch or naive.
Worst part is he actually met a number of good, normal harem girls. It's just Myne and her friends showed up first and they weren't willing to share. What they did to those girls is unforgivable.

He's heard one such girl's voice screaming for help from a brothel, and later heard Myne and friends laughing about how easy it was to sell her, and still he keeps coming up with reasons to believe that's not the case. It's one thing to be oblivious. It's another thing to deliberately forget anything you don't like.

It's kinda annoying how rising of the shield hero is structured each season and skips alot of things that should've been in it, especially squeezing an entire volume and then some into 4 episodes, causing season 2 to suffer. Eclair stuff, intro to the other heroes' partyies and the meeting before cal mira wave would've been nice to have.
Parsley to me. My description of Motoyasu is this. He is an immature man child driven by his lust and impulses and only does whatever he feels like doing and only believes and hears whatever he wants to believe and hear.

Spear hero seems to be like a Rudeus gone wrong and who went to college. In the sense that they are both lolicons, perverts and have their women issues. And I mean he is based on a harem protagonist gone wrong. And blind faith is as bad as extreme doubt. The funny thing is that Motoyasu is a rather goodlooking guy in most stories despite his faults. He would seem like a harem protagonist if it weren’t for his character flaws. His Filo obsession does definitely equate to trauma and unlikely attitudes towards women. The degeneracy following or related to trauma or other issues that could happen.
Also does Myne get any redemption or character growth AT ALL? Like apparently her punishment wasn’t severe enough.

Myne doesn't have any redemption so far, but she is tied to the main antagonists so it's not like she just keeps on doing the same thing for the whole story.

With how little he considers others feelings I’m surprised that he ever even had girlfriends, but I’m not surprised that he got stabbed, cheating will sometimes lead you down that road.
I seriously don’t get why he wasn’t just open and took a poly route? Maybe because he didn’t want them dating other people? Idk? That’s usually the case when I read about cheaters.
Oh and I never would have guessed that he’d be a lolicon or is it mainly the Angel aspect that he likes about Filo? Either way he still kinda fawns over her in a way that seems weird.
As far as the loli thing goes it generally comes off more like he's into the angel aspect and doesn't give much thought to age, rather than that he's explicitly into younger girls (which is still not GOOD, but is a distinction.) There's a side story that the anime didn't adapt where he sees Raphtalia as a kid, but doesn't care to see what she's up to because she's not (yet) attractive to him.

In the WN version I think he was being secretive about cheating, but in the LNs he seemed really open about the fact that he wasn't going to commit to anyone. His main annoyance with the two girls who stabbed him was that they fought with each other too much for him to take them on a three-person date. In both versions, he's stabbed when they tell him to pick one or the other of them and he tells them outright that he doesn't want to commit to either one, rather than because he's simply caught cheating.

Hi Motoyasu and how I hate your guts. But the problem is that since the user interface implies this is some game, I can't even hate you like I hate generic villains, so it isn't even the character the audience knows are horrible people but are fun to watch kind of thing. And worst of all, so many authors want to make clones of you.

He was not killed by one yandere, he was killed by two yandere at the same time. One of them stabbed his front while the other stabbed his back as the two of them showed up at his place upset at each other.
Yeah, that's revealed in the spin off novels (I've only just started reading those). In the main LN he just refers to 'that woman' so I'd assumed it was just one.
