It's very therapeutic watching you work and solve and work your strategy as you talk it out loud.
    Keep em' coming!

Therapeutic in a sense that you want to throw some haptic switches to him instead of encourage him to reuse the full-of-gunk-switch in order to save 10ct?

I priced a new fob a while back, about a £ 10 but they wanted £ 60 to tune it to my cars frequency ,so I bought a bag full of tactile switches off AliExpress and replaced the damaged one, still going strong🙏 ,good vid rich 👍

using the app version of aliexpress, you can actually take a photo of the casing then do a photo search. That's faster. same goes for taobao.

little tip for you. just cut to shape and glue the insides membrane of any old keyboard (most have silicon "rebound" pads) on the inside of the key fob. This will protect the button and look at least a bit better :)

Actually I thought maybe to take some form old TV remote controls. I've told the owner I can get a new case for the Puegeot fob and psossibly for the other if I know what it belongs to. I've got to go see him in the next couple of days as I just completed another repair for him - PA Amplifier, I'll upload later today

The eeprom/mcu stores a bin file with rolling code key string. The car has a module that like the bcm or immo box that stores and compares the key string. If the keys string is wrong or the key is not programmed to the car then the cars immobilizer will not give start authorization as an anti theft system. So the coil you seen amplifies the key bin file and the cars receiver most of the time installed around the ignition lock cylinder. If you want to restore the key without contacting me

Hi Richard. I love your work.
I have a key fob that went through the washing machine and no longer lights the led when the button is pressed, even with a new battery. What do you think my chances are at getting it working again, and what is likely to be the main challenge? Is it likely to work if I can remove all of the corrosion?
Genuine dealer replacement costs $500 AUD (around $330 Euros)! This is because they have to use special equipment to register a new fob to the car. So it's worth me having a go at fixing it.

Hi Richard that is a great video. Actually I have a car key with only the - closing doors button - is working. The other one to open the doors stopped working. Seeing your video I am sure you can fix it. I also have an idea to talk about. Will contact you soon.

Here in Canada key fobs cost 100 to 150 plus programming 60 to 100 bucks becomes a expensive little thing and some cars don't even have a external lock to manually work the doors

On the Peugeot fob the key blade is held in by a roll pin that knocks out very easily, so you can swap the blank blade on the new fob with the original key blade. You don't need to get a new one cut.

Requires transponder programming by someone like me or you can de solder the mcu and transfer it to donor or immobilizer will lock you out

If you were to get a replacement shell for the peugeot fob you'd have to change the switches again to some closer to the originals - otherwise you'd have to cut the new shell to accept the replacements you fitted and allow them room to work, so it would look similar to the existing one! 🙂

Hi all, does anybody know what type of Crystal oscillator I need to repair a Vauxhall key fob, I thought I would need a 433mhz but they don’t seem to be available to buy?

Nice repair, but regarding the second one, I don’t think it will hold without securing the switches down or use ‘proper’ switches. If the owner manages to break them I kinda suspect they are not being gentle with them and the only thing holding the switches are 2 small solder pads. When the pads break, repairing them will be even more difficult

Yeah you could be right. Actually I did use some hot melt glue (in the video) to hold them down so we will see.

Richard, could you mention what power supply you would recommend to purchase. I have a 10 amp/30volt desktop power supply but I cannot adjust it to get more then .1amp at .8volt while checking for a short. I saw you doing the same thing and getting several amps at .8 to 1 volt. You mentioned on one video that you would get a 10amp/30volt the next time you needed one. Could you recommend one that would allow several amps such as the one you would buy. Thanks. I tried discord to get help, but no answers as of yet. Thanks again and stay well.

amtpdb1 The current depends on the resistance of the load or 'short' not the power supply.
In your case ohms law say R=V/I You have 0.8V and 0.1A
      So R = 0.8/0.1 = 8 ohms
If the 'short' is reading much lower than that on your multi meter (in ohms range not diode test mode) try using some thick wires from the PSU and solder them to the device under test at the points which you read the low resistance. Then measure the voltage with your multi meter at both the PSU output and the points you attached the wires. It chould be about the same if you got a good connection
If the resistance of your 'short' really is about 8 ohms then most likely you don't have a short at all, you need to post more info about the device and where you are reading the low resistance.
