My grandfather was killed when using 4 bumper jacks to lift a car while he replaced the exhaust system for $5.00 labor. Jacking a car is serious business.
I worked in many gas stations where jacking up a car onto floor jacks by hand was standard operating procedure, in one place we had 12 bays and only 2 floor lifts that were kept open for quick oil changes. The rest were all on floor jacks. Many of the older center post lifts don’t allow access to the central area under the car, which is where the mechanical parts of the car are located.
Cheap jack stands and jacks always worked for me. Have done plenty of engine and transmission swaps with them. Recently converted my 99 Audi A4 Quattro from an auto to manual transmission using jack stands.
We were just sitting at the shop having lunch when the Jack stands just dropped the car they been there about a couple of days and they just fell for no reason luckily no one was under the car wtf don't just trust anything when it comes to your life use safety overkill!
I miss the wooden ramps my father built. They were to stay in the garage when not in use but I had to put them outside for the house/garage to be worked on and never got to put them back in and they rotted away. Time flies when you become busy with life but I am still upset about not putting those nice ramps he built by hand and I'll never forgive myself.
The Pyramids were built using wood blocking. Still used today to lift massive machinery and move houses. Just takes time, but very safe if you know what you're doing!
You should never trust any jack to hold a car. Seals can fail suddenly. Even slow leaks can lower the car on top of you, and you dont even notice until its too late.
The one at the 2:23 Mark that is made out of wood if you use the right lumber and do this correctly this is actually a realistic affordable easy way to get your car lifted on your own property
I buy and sell a lot of cars, so I bit the bullet and spent a grand on a used two poster for my backyard. With proper maintenance, it has lasted ten years so far.
Take the ones at 8:30 put a small ramp on each one to drive up onto with a small airbag in each, hook a common air line to each and lift whole car at the same time by opening a valve.
Always have 2 things holding the car up. A couple of old rims, a couple more jack stands, some tire cribs under the frame, whatever will stop a car from crushing you. If one thing fails, it is better to crap your pants from being scared than from being crushed.
Soooo many ways to die🤣 I admire ingenuity and creativity, and yes some products you can buy are also sketchy. But I would rather trust my life to tried and tested products just personal opinion 😉
How do you think these products came to be? It was a person with an idea. They made it, they tried it, and tested it over, and over. You have to know how to weld descent and know a little about metal but it's not hard to learn these things.
@@anonymous4507 there's a lot more to it than just being able to weld what about known tensile strengths of hardware? Stress testing the metal being used knowing your welds have penetrated sufficiently? As I said I admire the ingenuity not once have a do e any of these creations down, some are very clever. But when your holding a car up you need to 100% know that it's either going to hold up or not tip over. And yes there's many off the shelf products that are not up to the job they're intended for.
I built wood ramps with 2x12s. The only ramps I trust my life with. I'm sure they could hold up a house. Otherwise, it's jack stands with locking pins.

There's a few good ideas here, but the most important thing that everyone forgot was a way to remove the wheels. You have to lift by the frame and not the wheels.
I think the idea with these are to work under the car. Sometimes you need to lift by the wheels only because frame is so rusted it can't even hold jack stands.
That's only if you want to remove the wheels. Changing ATF, oil, coolant parts etc all require the car to be level while you are working under it, and none require the wheels to be removed
I made drive up ramps using wood blocking front and rear wheels. Having the wheels sitting on solid wood stacks (no daylight between the layers) is about the safest you can be.
I added expanded mesh to mine, and extended the mesh another 15cm along the level ground at the top of the ramp. The tyre can't push the ramp if it is already on the mesh that is part of the ramp. No more trouble with the ramp sliding
All these require for vehicle to move under its own power...the teeter needs a cable pulley system...floor jack and jack stands take up less room..would be a great addition to a shop with extra room..
@@dnegel9546 because when you live in the rustbelt. The salt destroy your unibody to the point where you need a 4 foot piece of cedar plank to ever so gingerly lift your decrepit shitbox up in the air
Many people assume lifting up a car and having it rest on four jack stands is ok - me included - until I looked at Project Farm's jack stand video ua-cam.com/video/hXzusz_eUy8/v-deo.html 1. In reality, four adjustable jack stands are not holding up the whole car. Just the teeth of the jack. The teeth are the weak point. 2. I'm sure they cut the video on the second jack contraption before we all watched that car fall into the hole on it's side. That looked crazy to me. No way I'd put anything of value up on that lift.
The atrocious welding on some of these so call car lifts are death traps, some good ideas, but scary, they're dealing with a lot of dead weight and not enough safety.
